Mets You Couldn't Help But Scream At
Valadius Aug 27 2007 05:03 PM |
A thought popped into my head as I considered the suckitude of Scott Schoeneweis... who are the all-time most cringe-inducing examples of suckitude, blowing chances, or simply screwing up in Mets history? Who could never get it done in a big spot? Who would cause you to erupt in obscenities when they came into the game or were up at bat?

When you are so sucky -- or as least suck compared to the level of success expected -- that you define an era, that's bad.

Jose Lima. The only worthwhile contribution he made to the team was Melissa's picture in the wifey watch thread.

This thread is screaming all sorts of important lessons, including one highlighted in this post. Sadly, they will most likely learn nothing.

I like that TransMonk not only gave us an answer, but gave us his scream.

Great call, though in my case it was more muffled anguish than a straight-out scream. Ditto for Ray Knight in 1985. Got over that quickly in '86.

Jeez, 1984 was a fairy tale. You used your breath screaming at the guy who was the fifth outfielder for the first half of the season?

Suck in a bad year and you suck with many. Suck in a close year and your suck really stands out. ETA: It's easy enough to recall "Jerry Martin never got a big hit, in fact he always made an out in a clutch situation and cost the Mets just enough to make a substantial difference in their race with the Cubs." Of course statistics exist to either subvert or support our memories. According to Baseball-Reference.com, Jerry Martin in 1984: --went 3 for 24 with two walks, 13 strikeouts and two double plays grounded into as a pinch-hitter --went 2 for 23 with two walks, seven strikeouts and 3 double plays grounded into with runners in scoring position --went 1 for 19 in "late & close" situations, walking twice, striking out eight times and grounding into 3 double plays in the 7th inning later with the Mets tied, up by one or the tying run at least on deck I reiterate my applause of HahnSolo's call and retroactively unmuffle by Jerry Martin-related scream.

It seems kind of pointless. Guys will fail every year.

The Mets won by 21-1/2 games in 1986. Jerry Martin could have taken a few dozen at-bats and it wouldn't have mattered a whole bunch. In 1984, Jerry Martin was, to my 1984 self, the fly in some otherwise delightful ointment, particularly as a 4-1/2 game lead in late July melted away, making the ointment a little yucky in real time. Sadly, I have not reached the point of contentment where I remember that men in Mets uniforms do in fact not always succeed when I want them to and accept it as a fact of this imperfect life. Guillermo Mota's A-OK, too.

Early in 1984, we didn't really know it was going to be a fairy tale. He was also a former teammate of Davey's, which seemed to gain him more ABs than his production indicated he should be getting.

Dave Kingman. Stupidest man to ever play major league baseball. He could only do three things at the plate:

Rey Ordonez. Most frustratingly bad everyday hitter I've seen on the Mets since I started following baseball.
