So here are our choices for Saturday's game in Atlanta:

Scott Schoeneweis

I guess it's a choice between designating Sele or Lawrence to activate Chavez -- the "winner" goes/stays in long relief.

From the Times: Concerned about his cut fastball and changeup after his last start, Martínez said he significantly improved on each.

As he should. He should also get the hell out of Florida and face some higher talent before joining the big club.

I don't even care about Pedro.

I didn't expect I'd ever see the Mets negotiating with him in May for June-September contracts, until you mentioned it. I hope you're wrong.

Pedro is the one calling the shots here,at least where he's pitching anyway...apparently Pedro feels so good that he thinks he can pitch another four years.

They don't need to negotiate contracts with him, but rather as irish said, they'll let him call all the shots.

I'm pretty sure he's still under contract for another year, folks. So let him come back in September, hopefully win a game or two, then hopefully contribute in the playoffs. If he's healthy enough after the offseason to be a contributing member of the rotation next year, then that's great; if he's 6-11, 4.33 in 24 starts next year because of injury, then I don't think the Mets are going to be too excited about signing him to any contract, much less a June-September one.

I would be surprised if anyone other than Lawrence gets DFAd for Endy. As has been pointed out, Saturday is the 1st so my guess is it would be Humber or Williams.
|
Johnny Dickshot Aug 28 2007 09:36 AM |
Even Sele?
|
sharpie Aug 28 2007 09:46 AM |
Even Sele. They've gone this long with him and they don't need a starting pitcher before the 1st when rosters expand.
|

Why do we have Sele though,as bad as Lawrence has been at least he is contributing innings,Sele pitches every few weeks,I think it's Sele that goes.

You have to have a long man, especially when you have Oliver Perez and Brian Lawrence and a very human John Maine in your starting rotation. I'll keep Sele around for now, then leave him off the postseason roster, when your fifth starter becomes your long man.

btw, Humber pitched last night and so would be on rotation for Saturday as well -- following up his 10-K/near no-hitter in his last outing with a 5 IP, 1 unearned run, 2-hit performance against Oklahoma.

what about Mulvey? How has he been doing this year? Any reported consideration of Mets giving him a taste of September?

None that I've heard. Besides, he's not on the 40-man so it would involve not only a dropped player somewhere else now but it would also mean one fewer guy would be protected this winter. I can't see how that would be worth it for essentially one start. Anyway, it won't be Lawrence this Saturday. He was the one sent down to activate Endy.

Pelfrey pitched on Tuesday and was pulled after just 43 pitches and 2-2/3 hitless innings -- possibly meaning that he's being considered for Saturday's start or maybe that they're looking to him as a bullpen filler once rosters expand.
