I won $100,000.00 last night....

...in my mind. After Glavine came out of the game I placed an imaginary (but very real to me) bet that the Mets would lose. I have never felt so certain about a game's outcome as I did last night. Too bad I wasn't in Vegas. Or maybe not.

I don't fear the pen. As thin as they look now, if the team survies this series and the next and makes it to the post-season, we're not far a way from a stabilized Wagner for the ninth, a stabilized Heilman for the eighth, Smith and Feliciano to play matchup with, and reinforcements from the starters as the rotation is shortened by the post-season days off and the possible return of Martinez. Not that I feel supremely confident. But what scares me more is the possiblity of too many offensive cylanders not firing come October.

Well, April-May (the epoch of Reyes) were mostly fine. Wright didn't have his power stroke, but Alou was healthy. Obviously for a few weeks leading into this series, the offense looked good (Alou back!). Looked good on the swing through LA and San Diego also. Really, it's Reyes' bat that keeps me up.

The team's ERA is around 4, which is among the better ERAs in the NL. And they gave up 4 runs last night. It was the offense's job to score 5. And they didn't have to face Koufax to do it. Wright is the only guy hitting consistently. we can't win that way.

Anyone else get the fear that CB Bucknor's high strike zone the other night would instantly begin a slump for Wright? At some level I think maybe he knew that too, which is why he argued so hard.

We'll see soon enough, I guess. No, I didn't look at it like that. Wright went down looking late last night on a low inside fastball. Sucked to see him crossed up like that.* If he starts to go down flailing a high pitches, we know who to blame. *Gary Carter --- strong forearms like Wright --- would look fastball with two strikes and fight off the curve. Led to a lot of double plays, but he struck out pretty rarely for a power hitter. Ah, forget it. I don't want Wright to hit like Carter.
