* El Duque has a "foot pain" and is returning to NY to get it checked out
apparantly he got hit by a ball but I'm not sure which play

* Pelfrey will get the start on Saturday

* And PEDRO will slot in for Monday's game at Cincinatti
He apparently threw a bullpen today and so all systems are go without an additional minor league start

So at the moment we're looking at:
Fri - Maine (vs Hudson)
Sat - Pelfrey (v Chuck James)
Sun - Glavine (v Smoltz)
Mon - Pedro (v Cincy ace Aaron Harang)
Tues - OPerez

and after that I guess it depends on how Ducky's foot and Pedro's body in general are doing.

Stunning news on Pedro.....and not good on Hernandez...

A later report (FAN quoting Minaya from earlier today) says that Pedro [u:3311dc4e51]is possible[/u:3311dc4e51] for Monday ... although it sounds probable.
Says his bullpen went well but they want to see how he feels tomorrow before deciding whether he starts Monday in Cincy or for the Cyclones in Brooklyn thereby pushing his first ML start back to Saturday.

Duque will miss at least one turn through the rotation.

Ouch. My jaw just hit the ground.

Duque getting some rest is a thing that is good.

Duque probably back on track for next weekend against Houston.

No official word on Pedro re: Monday, but unless he woke up this morning with his shoulder falling off no one believes it won't happen.

They do have the option of skipping El Duque a second time with the upcoming off day on Thursday 9/6. Plus the September call-ups.

Seriously considering driving to Cincy.

12 each way. Tonight's not the problem, getting home tomorrow is.

4 AM with work staring me in the face at 8.

12 hours if you drive like an old lady, perhaps.

Google maps sez it's 638 miles, 10:30. That means it can be done in 9, no problem. I seriously considered the drive myself...

8 hours at most if you are willing to take a speeding ticket or two (and remember, out of state speeding tickets are not points on your license)

You two are seriously forgetting that this is road construction season. At least in Pennsylvania, where it's as sacred as deer hunting season.

The four seasons of Pennsylvania: Early Winter, Winter, Late Winter and Construction.

Mets' Pedro will have his limits for Monday start

BY DAVID LENNON | david.lennon@newsday.com

The Mets gave their rubber-stamp approval yesterday for Pedro Martinez to start tomorrow against the Reds. The agreement, however, included a few lines of fine print.

He will be limited to 75 pitches in his first start for the Mets since Sept. 27 of last year, and he can throw no more than 35 in an inning. The front office is taking no chances after his 11-month rehab from rotator-cuff surgery. Just call this outing Pedro Lite.

"That was made clear to me before I took the mound," Martinez said. "For a guy like me who has been around for so long, it's hard, actually, to obey that rule. They want the best for the team and I have to agree to that."

The Mets' plan to keep a tight leash on Martinez is reminiscent of what the Yankees did with David Cone in his 1996 return from aneurysm surgery. Cone had a no-hitter going against the A's when he was lifted after seven. Would Martinez do the same? "I'm going to have to," he said. " ... I already gave my word."

Martinez awoke with no problems after Friday's 64-pitch bullpen session, but he was wrapped like King Tut when he emerged from the trainer's room yesterday. He had one heating pack draped around his stiff neck and another hanging from his right hip. They served as a reminder that Martinez, despite a relatively smooth rehabilitation, is 35 with 2,645 innings thrown. He also pointed out that he's built his career on nothing stronger than Advil. He tried to temper the large expectations and wants emotions out of it.

"I believe I'm young enough to survive this and do it for a few more years," he said. "If I'm healthy like I'm expecting to be, hopefully I'll live up to my contract and hopefully put up some numbers. Help this team make it to the World Series and win it."

How much of an insult is this to the Reds?

- "We need to rest El Duque, let him skip a start."

- "Who do you want to plug in there? Humber? Sosa?"

- "How about Pedro?"

- "Nah. Let's not push him any harder than necessary. He needs another start against a minor league team."

- "Well, Cincinnati...."

- "Good point."

Mets confirm that Duque will NOT start this weekend v Houston, meaning that Pelfrey gets at least one more go 'round and everyone gets extra rest due to Thursday's off day.
