]The New York Mets announced today that prior to Saturday's game against Atlanta, they will recall righthanded pitchers Mike Pelfrey and Philip Humber and select the contract of lefthanded pitcher Willie Collazo from the Zephyrs.

For NO this year: 93.1 IP, 88 H, 27 ER, 19 BB, 62 K, 2.60 ERA

27 year old lefty reliever originally drafted by the Braves in 2001.

I believe he's had a steroid suspension in his past. Don't quote me.

splits show better 2nd half than 1st:

You've been quoted. He served 15 games in April of 2005 while in the Angels organization.

the splits also say lefties are hitting .244/.272/.294 off of him in 119 ABs this year, i suppose we find a mid-inning lefty or two for him this year

How about pushing Sele off the roster for a few days, and get him up before 9/1.

Not sure how easy it would be to take a vet like Sele off the roster, even temporarily.
There's also probably a DL'd pitcher or two (Padilla?, Duaner?) who can be "replaced" on the post-season roster by a guy like Collazo who wasn't up prior to Sept 1 if he shows enough to warrant inclusion.
I know they tightened a few of the loopholes in the rule that allows that sort of thing but it is still possible to swap one player for another under the right circumstances.

Meanwhile, Joe Smith is on the Zephyr's 7-Day DL (retroactive to a few days back) so he could be up sometime next week if his "strained biceps tendon" calms down.

That loophole is lame and I'd hate to use it. Letting on like an eight-month-old DL assignment somehow forces a team to include a September player is risible.

September players should be eligible when no other-pre-September players are available.

Isn't that how Anaheim added Frankie Rodriguez (K-Rod) to their WS championship squad??

Yeah, but even then there was something fishy about it to the point where the MLB offices later admitted it never should have allowed him to be added.
Steve Phillips used to exploit that loophole all the time back in those 99-00 days. He'd put some injured low-minors player with no shot at the majors onto the 40-man roster just so he could "replace" that guy on the post-season roster with a guy who wasn't on the 25 on Sept 1.
Since those days they've restricted how much you can play with those exceptions, but it is still possible.

This Collazo guy is on a nice roll right now.
He appeared in 12 games in August with 24 IP, 0 ER, 16 H, 5 BB, 18 K
Overall he doesn't look like a big strikeout guy but he doesn't walk many either and keeps the keeps the baserunners to a minimum -- 1.12 WHiP
Hometown is listed as Carolina, Puerto Rico, famous for producing Roberto Clemente

We needed another lefty in the pen! Hopefully he can knock an old fart off the team (like Sele).

Rosters are expanded. There's no space-on-the-roster crunch.

I know they are. I'm talking about next season. Hopefully he performs well enough that he slots out someone like Sele when we come back next year.

Age-ism has reached the point when it's gotten quite boring.

You're just saying that because you're an old fuddy-duddy.

Yeah, plus Valadius is insulting Sele for being the old guy at the back of the bullpen this year in this thread, but yearning for Darren Oliver in another thread.
