Eliminated

The Devil Rays have won 9 out of 12 after today's thumping of the Yanks and get rewarded by being officially eliminated from the AL East divisional race. Their elimination number for the wildcard is 6.

Other low divisional elimination numbers: Baltimore with 5 and the White Sox with 6.

I can't wait until the Braves and Yankees make this thread.

Sep 02 2007 09:32 PM

The latter would have a much better chance of happening if;

a) the Mariners didn't pick now to go into a NINE GAME LOSING STREAK

and/or

b) the Tigers didn't insist on BLOWING SEVEN RUN LEADS like they did today.

Boston beat Baltimore last night knocking them out of contention for the division. The AL East is now literally a 3 team race...even though the O's and the Rays have been realistically out of it for months.

A White Sox loss to Minnesota at home and/or a Cleveland win at Anaheim tonight will eliminate Chicago from the AL Central.

The way I look at it, a team isn't really eliminated until they're also knocked out of the wild card race.

At the moment, Tampa Bay, with 82 losses, is the only team guaranteed to have a losing season. (The White Sox have 81 losses; they're the only other team guaranteed to not have a winning season.)

The Devil Rays are 20 games behind with 22 to play. White Sox are 19 out, also with 22 to play.

Technically, no, but because all of the teams in front of them have to play each other, practically, they're eliminated, even if the simple magic number doesn't work that way.

White Sox eliminated from AL Central contention on Saturday and will be eliminated from the wildcard with a loss and a Yankee win on Sunday.

Tampa Bay eliminated from the wildcard on Saturday.

A Mets win and a Marlin loss on Sunday eliminates Florida from winning the NL East.

The Marlins have just been eliminated from the NL East race.

Cleveland's win Sunday night over the Angels eliminates Kansas City from the AL Central race.

The White Sox's loss earlier in the day excludes them from any playoff consideration in 2007.

Baltimore and KC sit with wildcard elimination numbers of 1 and 2 respectively, but will live to fight until at least Tuesday because of the short schedule on Monday.

White Sox and Astros are only a game out of the Worst Team of the Year Standings.

Not a bad showing for your 2005 World Series Finalists.

Not too different from the 2002 Mets.

TransMonk
Sep 11 2007 10:59 AM

I'm calling the Marlins in the wildcard race. They technically have a magic number of 3, but due to the remaining schedules of the Rockies, Padres and Dodgers, there is no possible scenario of outcomes where they can win.

KC and Baltimore can now officially plan their October vacation plans.

Which means we're down to only 150 possible World Series combinations for 2007.

Nymr83

Selig has already made 150 combinations of hotel reservations, remember thats the reason we can't just given homefield to the better team.

True dat...although Houston is still alive in the NL Central.

Washington, however is dead in both waters.

It definitely demonstrates how weak the NL Central division is when teams are mathematically eliminated from the Wild Card race, but still have a shot at winning the divisional crown.

The Texas Rangers have been completely eliminated.

The Blue Jays have flown south for the winter. Only 6 teams still alive in the AL...and it's only a matter of time for Seattle and Detroit.

Benjamin Grimm

So we're down to only 88 possible World Series matchups.

The Yankees look to be the only AL team from last year's postseason to return this year.

If the Mets make it to the World Series, they'll either get a repeat opponent in the Red Sox or Yankees, or we'll see a brand new opponent in the Indians or Angels.

(I perfer Cleveland.)

And for the 7th year in a row we will have a new MLB World Champion! And 11th different NL champ since the 95-96 Braves.

SteveJRogers
Sep 22 2007 09:24 PM

Detroit and Seattle are staying alive in their respective divisions, Arizona can end the Dodgers NL West reign tonight.

The Red Sox with their win tonight clinched a playoff spot, which means Detroit pretty much needs to win every game and hope the Indians and Yankees lose every game. FWIW the Yankees number for both the Mariners and Tigers stands at 3.

And heading into the final week of the regular season, only the Tigers and Mariners are barely alive in the AL but 5 teams are still alive in the NL Wild Card (Phillies (1 game back right now), Rockies (3 games back), Braves (5 games back), Dodgers (6.5) and Brewers (6.5)

Also in the NL, along with the Phillies the Braves are still "breathing." Well, the number to continue the current streak of years without a division championship is now at 1. Same for the Dodgers in the NL West, but the Rockies at 4 and Padres at 8 are still left to deal with. The Brewers are the last team left battling in the Central.

Yance, that was meant that the NL will not have back-to-back champs again since the Braves won back-to-back in 1996. Not the 11th different franchise as the Cards and Marlins have won twice in that time frame, and we all hope the Mets will make it a threesome this year for that time frame.

Rockin' Doc

Steve, your meaning was not abundantly clear. Like Yancy, I too was confused as to what your true meaning was. What you meant to convey and what you wrote were not the same.

The Dodgers have been eliminated in the NL West. They have a tragic number of 2 for the wild card. The Mariners have a tragic number of 1, and the Tigers have a tragic number of 2. The Braves' tragic number for the NL East is 2, and 4 for the wild card.

Valadius
Sep 25 2007 11:49 PM

The Dodgers are out. The Mariners are out too, if their extra-innings game ends with the current score.

TransMonk
Sep 26 2007 08:09 AM

Seattle and the Dodgers are indeed out. The Tigers look for a miracle to keep from being the last AL team eliminated in the regular season.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 26 2007 08:27 AM

And half the National League is still alive, at least mathematically.

If Baseball Prospectus' odds turn out to be accurate, the next four teams to be eliminated (prior to the post-season) will be, in order: Atlanta, Milwaukee, Colorado, Philadelphia.

TransMonk
Sep 26 2007 09:36 PM

And the Tigers are out, meaning the AL half of the bracket is set with the Angels, Indians, Red Sox and Yankees all into the postseason.

The NL is still up in the air with 8 teams alive and no spots clinched.

Nymr83

Rockin' Doc

My thoughts exactly Nymr. They'll be cueing the Mets up and adding them to the list soon enough I suspect.

By allowing themselves to be eliminated, the Braves helped the Mets take one step closer to elimination hell.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 28 2007 09:00 AM

Five of the eight teams that made the postseason last year are gone. Yankees are in (gag) and the Mets and Padres are still alive.

Frayed Knot
Sep 28 2007 09:05 PM

Brewers

TransMonk
Sep 28 2007 09:19 PM

It's amazing that Chicago is the first to clinch with the worst record of the playoff teams. The Brewers played harder than they have in years, but fell a bit short.

The Mets have to win to stay off this list tomorrow.

I welcome the pain. I listened to Mad Dog on the way home. I watched Baseball Tonight. I'm going to look at Transmonk's most recent post in this thread. And I'm going to go watch the last inning of the 2007 NLCS in a few minutes.
