Brian Lawrence gets the start tomorrow. I guess WR would rather have Lawrence, who obviously wasn't great as he was sent down after several starts, was deemed more worthy than Pelfrey or Humber.

Zvon
Sep 16 2007 10:50 AM

bring it.

Valadius
Sep 16 2007 11:03 AM

Well, Joe Smith is back.

Zvon
Sep 16 2007 11:04 AM

Maybe it's a different Joe Smith.
Thats a very common name.

Zvon
Sep 16 2007 11:08 AM

Hey Edgy.
I thought I fixed that Wright avatar hat and sent it to you awhile back.
I have the newer one right here in my files.

I assume you did get the Glavine.
Maybe these were lost in the shuffle between boards.

Zvon
Sep 16 2007 11:12 AM

Lo Duca starting today too. Alou too.
Im thrilled.

Rollins draws a game opening walk. :(

bmfc1
Sep 16 2007 11:17 AM

Nice back up Beltran. Wake UP!!!!

Valadius
Sep 16 2007 11:17 AM

Utley K's.

Valadius
Sep 16 2007 11:19 AM

Burrell K's, but not before Rollins scoots his way to third.

Zvon
Sep 16 2007 11:21 AM

Perez strikesout the side in the 1st!
wooohooo.

An throwing error by Lo Duke could have ended up costing us,
allowing Rollins to get to third.
But it don't.

Valadius
Sep 16 2007 11:24 AM

Reyes grounds out to first.

Reyes ought to try doing the infield single thing again, that worked.

Zvon
Sep 16 2007 11:25 AM

Philllies broadcasters say:

(translated by me from what they actually said into what I type below)

1. Adam Eaton sucks, but he don't suck against the Mets.

2. If Perez is "on", the Phils will have their work cut out for them, and Perez looked awfully "on" in the 1st.

Valadius
Sep 16 2007 11:26 AM

Wright draws a walk, here's Beltran.

Zvon
Sep 16 2007 11:27 AM

Fire Ricky.

Valadius
Sep 16 2007 11:28 AM

RICKEY!!!!!!!!!

Valadius
Sep 16 2007 11:32 AM

I have a feeling we might see a dugout-emptying brawl today.

On edit: this is my 3,333rd post. Just thought that was pretty cool.

Valadius
Sep 16 2007 11:38 AM

HOW DO YOU WALK THE PITCHER, OLIVER?!?!?!?

bmfc1
Sep 16 2007 11:40 AM

How do you screw up an easy ground ball, Jose?

Valadius
Sep 16 2007 11:41 AM

JOSE!!!!!!!! GAHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!!!

Zvon
Sep 16 2007 11:43 AM

Perez Ks 2, but gives up a single and walks 2, including the pitcher,
and then Reyes is charged with 2 errors on an easy (tho his vision was blocked by the runner) ground ball off Rollins.
One boot for missing the grounder, one for his rushed and errant throw to second.

Even the Phils announcers say thats a rare thing, to see Reyes boot one like that. Hasn't happened in 44 games.
They called it a "fluke."

Utley flys out.

Phils up 2-0

Edgy DC
Sep 16 2007 11:45 AM

Jose is out of focus.

What did Rickey do?

Valadius
Sep 16 2007 11:46 AM

I can't deal with an angry Jose. We need happy, jolly Jose.

Valadius
Sep 16 2007 11:48 AM

Rickey sent David to second, where he got caught and ended the inning.

Edgy DC
Sep 16 2007 11:48 AM

Junior Ortiz talk in the booth.

Apparently he had a stutter.

Alou recognizes and waits nicely on Eatons curve ball, but grounds out hard to 3rd.
Alou is 0 fer 1.

1-2-3 inning for the phight'ins.

Ill edit that Alou gaffaw

Valadius
Sep 16 2007 11:50 AM

Alou is 0 for 1.

Valadius
Sep 16 2007 11:55 AM

Perez is giving me a heart attack.

Valadius
Sep 16 2007 11:58 AM

Oh good lord...

Zvon
Sep 16 2007 11:59 AM

This outing by Perez reminds me of a Sid Fernandez performance in the late 80's.

Perez walks Werth and then tosses his glove.

He may have twisted his right leg.

Bases loaded, one out :(

Edgy DC
Sep 16 2007 12:01 PM

C'mon Betran. Follow your cutoff man.

Zvon
Sep 16 2007 12:02 PM

Sac fly by Helms.

Beltran allows Werth to tag from 1st to 2nd by throwing to third to try and get Howard, which wasn't going to happen.

They reload the bases by intentionally walking Ruiz.

If Perez walks Eaton with the bases loaded I will be livid.

TransMonk

The Mets collectively have their heads up their asses today.

Valadius
Sep 16 2007 12:04 PM

I wish I had beer. I need a drink.

bmfc1
Sep 16 2007 12:05 PM

Does anything go our way?

Johnny Dickshot
Sep 16 2007 12:06 PM

I hat the Mets.

Which doesn't make today a-typical.

Zvon
Sep 16 2007 12:07 PM

you have GOT to be kiddin me!

Burrell makes a GREAT catch in left. FLUKE ALERT!
He looked like a blind man running from a bee.

Yes, sometimes... let's see if they can take advantage.

Valadius
Sep 16 2007 12:09 PM

Come on, Jose... make up for the fuck-up...

Zvon
Sep 16 2007 12:10 PM

Valadius
Sep 16 2007 12:11 PM

Reyes walks, and the bases are loaded. Here's Castillo.

Zvon
Sep 16 2007 12:13 PM

what a play by J-Roll!

Almost a DP but we are spared that.

Valadius
Sep 16 2007 12:14 PM

Castillo gets one in on a fielder's choice, and now David Wright is at the plate with runners at the corners.

And David flies out.

Zvon
Sep 16 2007 12:16 PM

We get one back.
We should have gotten more. Rollins robbed us.

This might not be the best time to bring it up, but Jimmy Rollins could become the first player in
major league history to hit 40 doubles, 20 triples,30 home runs, and steal 30 bases in one season.

These are things I hope to see from Reyes someday.

Zvon
Sep 16 2007 12:19 PM

That can't be a triple!
Error on Alou.
How did he not catch that!??

He was right there!
Theres got to be a word to describe what that was,...Alou planting under a fly ball and not catching it.

Mendoza Line
Sep 16 2007 12:20 PM

]Theres got to be a word to describe what that was

Plenty of words, but I try to keep my posts PG-rated.

Edgy DC
Sep 16 2007 12:21 PM

Error is a good enough word.

David Wright, if it helps, that's your MVP trophy Utley is grabbing at.

bmfc1
Sep 16 2007 12:22 PM

The MVP is Rollins. He opened his mouth and backed it up.

But If I was going to comment Id say yes, if any Phil should get it, considering the last few weeks, considering the gaps where the Phils did not have Utley and Howard, it is J-Roll.

He's been doin the do.

Great catch by Beltran to close the Phils 4th.
And Beltran will lead it off.

Valadius
Sep 16 2007 12:26 PM

Beltran at the plate... at least according to Yahoo.

Valadius
Sep 16 2007 12:28 PM

Come on Moises, make it 20 games!!!

MFS62
Sep 16 2007 12:29 PM

The way this team is playing in this series, I'm getting flashbacks to the 1962 Mets.
Yeah, I know. The Mets killed LA during the regular '88 season, then LA won the playoff series.
But I don't see the Mets being able to beat Philly should they meet in the playoffs this year.
Just saying.

Later

Valadius
Sep 16 2007 12:32 PM

20 games!!!!!!

Valadius
Sep 16 2007 12:34 PM

Dookie sacs in Beltran!

Endy at the plate now.

Valadius
Sep 16 2007 12:37 PM

Can someone figure out the last time we had 4 errors in a game?

Zvon
Sep 16 2007 12:42 PM

How about the last time Reyes had 2 errors on one play?
Add resulting in 2 runs if you want.

bmfc1

Valadius wrote:

The most the Mets had in a game in '06 was 3 (4 times).
The most in a game was 7 (8/1/96 v Pittsburgh).

Zvon
Sep 16 2007 12:52 PM

Perez up to 115 pitches.

Valadius
Sep 16 2007 12:54 PM

Come on, Oliver!

Zvon
Sep 16 2007 12:56 PM

Rollins with a 2 out RBI double.

Perez's 118th pitch of the game will be his last.

Valadius
Sep 16 2007 12:57 PM

Methinks our starting pitchers need some rest.

Zvon
Sep 16 2007 01:02 PM

I don't know what to make of Perez.

He looked fantastic in the first, then he was all over the place.

Maybe also as Edgy says, A-typical.
We know he does this from time to time and I guess this was the time.
Get it past ya now, Oliver, I say.

You can't be doing this when it counts.

Edgy DC
Sep 16 2007 01:06 PM

Jayson Werth doing what the Mets aren't doing.

Zvon
Sep 16 2007 01:07 PM

Maybe Perez was spooked today, knowing Willie was watching him so closely.

We got 2 on, 1 out!

We got the Wright guy up!

Edgy DC
Sep 16 2007 01:13 PM

Your moment, Carlos.

Zvon
Sep 16 2007 01:14 PM

Should have taken that pitch to right Mr. Wright.
He pops out to deep left.

COME ON CARLOSBEE

Mota walks the first batter he faces.

Zvon
Sep 16 2007 01:33 PM

Walk, an error. and a walk loads em.
No freakin outs...

Mota is done.

Sosa is on.

Edgy DC
Sep 16 2007 01:35 PM

Eight walks, five errata, a caught stealing.

And they're only tied.

How can we act as if the Phils have the goods on them? They're beating themselves.

Zvon
Sep 16 2007 01:37 PM

Tell me Sosa wasn't squeezed there.
Walks in a run.

Mendoza Line
Sep 16 2007 01:38 PM

Rockin' Doc
Sep 16 2007 01:40 PM

Sosa walks in the go ahead run. Bases still loaded with Phillies and no outs yet.

I would rather Willie have started all the scrubs and rested the regulars over the starters sleep walking through a game with their heads up their butts.

Rockin' Doc
Sep 16 2007 01:45 PM

When you repeatedly give your opponent enough extra chances to score, they will usually cash it in eventually. With all the walks issued and errors committed by the Mets today, their boxscore reads like something from a bad Little League team.

Willets Point
Sep 16 2007 01:47 PM

On the bright side, this is the last time the Mets face the Phillies this season:

Another Pollyanna-ic note: the 1986 Mets had trouble beating the 2nd place Phillies as well.

Zvon
Sep 16 2007 02:03 PM

Hey Howard!
Babe Ruth called!
He wants his nose back!

Im forced into heckle mode.

Zvon
Sep 16 2007 02:10 PM

This games been so crazy a comeback wouldn't surprise me in the least.
Emotionally I'm spent, and I'm curious if the Mets can mount a comeback here if I will feel rejuvenated.

Zvon
Sep 16 2007 02:18 PM

WRIGHT

Mendoza Line
Sep 16 2007 02:19 PM

Congratulations to David Wright on getting to 30-30. Fat lady is warming up her vocal cords, but isn't singing yet.

Zvon
Sep 16 2007 02:24 PM

Alou really picks up that curve ball well.
Fun to watch him wait on it...and its not like he can't get the fastball.
I don't think he's guessing curve. He's thinking fast and seeing the ball real well.

3 hits for him today. Very nice. Still don't understand how he didn't catch that fly earlier.

Zvon
Sep 16 2007 02:34 PM

Anybody else thing that Lo Duca should get the rest of this day off?

He just took one that pained even me.

This game is embarrassing.

Rockin' Doc

Reyes and Wright following David's 30th

Where's that smile Jose?
