Trade Oliver Perez at your own risk.

Hard to fault them for this. The Aramis Ramirez deal really backfired too.

Only so long that the "At least he's better than the last guy" argument could protect him.

Know what would be fun? If the new GM decides to use their budget fielding a team of all pre-arbitration players, plus Alex Rodriguez.

Fun for me, anyhow. Maybe not for Pirate fans or Alex. But they'd always have that one mind-blowing day when the signing was announced.

If the Pirates ever get serious about Alex Rodriguez, Alex Rodriguez will have grown up always wanting to be a Pirate.

He even wore the puffy sleeves to bed.

They have a 07 payroll of $38+ million with $5+ million of that going to Jason Kendall, hard to compete with that money, especially with A-Rod probably looking for $30 million a year.

You really have to feel sorry for Pirates fans. With all that history, and possibly the best ballpark in the majors, they've had to settle for one of the most consistently bad teams of the past 10 years and an owner who won't spend money on talented players.

I was embarrassed for him after reading that Rule V bit.
