Aw, come on.

They're playing the Nationals and Marlins.

They're going to go 6-1 over this week and we'll be in a position to clinch by Tuesday of next week...maybe Wednesday.

In pregame transactional news, Dave Williams was called up and Brian Lawrence was DFAed.

Nook is a cool name.

I'm as wild about Dave Williams as I am about Brian Lawrence.

TransMonk
Sep 18 2007 03:10 PM

According to Metsblog.com, Tom Glavine suggested in an interview with WFAN today that the team would likely have a closed-door, players-only meeting before the game tonight. Glavine also stated it would be the first players-only meeting in the 5 years he's been a Met.

Yancy - "I'm as wild about Dave Williams as I am about Brian Lawrence."

At least Williams sucks from the left side.

Kid Carsey
Sep 18 2007 04:25 PM

Confirming what 'Monk said, Burkhardt was on SNY before from the field
and said that they had a meeting. Willie left and came out to talk to the
media and do a session with them, and the team was left alone for a good
forty minutes. No word if anyone emerged injured or bloodied.

Nice way to start.
Reyes walks and is forced out on Castillo's grounder.

Castillo comes all the way around on a deep double by Dave.

1-0 us.

Wowzers.

Beltran drives in Wright with a single.
2-0
Alou follows with a single.

The boys found their hittin sticks.

Green walks.
Bases all fulled up for Dookie.

4-0 early lead.
No way does this team blow one of those ... oh wait.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 18 2007 05:22 PM

As each run scored, I'd note to myself:

Okay, that will make up for the one that Mota will give up.

And that run will make up for the run that Sosa will give up.

Oh! Now that one will make up for the run that Schoeneweis will give up!

Zvon
Sep 18 2007 05:22 PM

Paul sacs in a run, and Endy singles in another.

Maine flys out and as the dust settles, its
4-0 Mets.

4-1 HR for Kearns ... I can only pop in here a little but a) how big does a lead

We're winning? What, did Willie turn over the clubhouse spread or something?

But seriously, I read that Paulie or Glavine or Delgado was talking about a team meeting.

Zvon
Sep 18 2007 06:22 PM

Yep, the old team meetin' went down.
] Mets manager Willie Randolph said that some of his players came to
him and asked to address the team. Randolph said he talked to his team
"briefly" on Tuesday, then left the players alone when he came out to speak
to the media.

Players declined to discuss the meeting when they took the field for
pre-game warmups, but Tom Glavine said earlier in the day that he might
ask a few veterans to talk to the team

Zvon
Sep 18 2007 06:28 PM

Nats score and threaten more but only come away with the one.

5-3 Mets.

Don't know how Maine looked that inning, but he didn't read well.

Anyone who can see: Can we get 2-3-4 more innings out of Maine?

Im loath to see any middle relievers tonight.

Marty Nobles at MLB.com has this regarding Alou's early departure tonight.

Tight quad forces Alou's departure
Veteran leaves Mets-Nats contest in top of fifth inning

WASHINGTON -- Moises Alou, who's missed a significant chunk of the season because of a severely strained left quadricep, was removed from the game on Tuesday night because of what the Mets termed as "tightness" in the same muscle.
Alou walked off the field with trainer Ray Ramirez in the fifth inning after advancing to second base on an infield out. He had also been on base in the first inning during the Mets' four-run rally. Alou also extended his hitting streak to 22 games with a single.

Alou, 41 and oft-injured, was assigned to the disabled list from May 13-July 27.

Zvon
Sep 18 2007 07:24 PM

I pictured Val sitting there in the 1st inning,

Now I picture him hiding his head under the seat.

Mota gets us out of that inning.

Maine got out to SUCH a great start. Then Alou pulls up lame and everything turns to shit.

We have an absolutely terrible bullpen, and our bench is pretty thin. We could use Delgado back right now.

Edgy, it was an absolute pleasure. Hopefully we can do this again next season. bmfc1, it was great meeting you as well - those are pretty good seats you've got there!

Met Valadius and caught up with bfmc again at the game. Val didn't hide under his seat. In truth, Met fans held the fort as best as we could, until the bitter end.

A lot of frustration. I came across an iramets lookalike in a Koosman jersey and asked him to warm up and get ready to go in, despite his apparent pensioner age. I either found it less frustrating watching our pitching fail today than our defense fail yesterday, or I just was more miserable yesterday because Ms. Edgy was there feeling pity for me.

Everybody there wants to hate Randolph, but I got the idea they want him to get past this and love him on the other side also. I mean, yeah, hate him for bringing in Motaweis, but Maine crashed early, and what's in his pen is what's in his pen.

Valadius
Sep 18 2007 11:13 PM

As I said to Edgy at the game, that stuff Hershiser said about Maine not having the right look in his eyes or whatever, I just remembered, when I went to Willie's charity auction thing, Maine was there, and he was just really really quiet. He was most often off in a corner somewhere, like he was hiding. I didn't make much of it until now, but now it speaks volumes.

After two nights with the Mets at RFK, I'm almost speechless. It was good seeing Edgy again and meeting Valadius although I don't know if I said anything coherent to either of them. It wasn't a good night for small talk or even coherent talk. At one point, I think I yelled "You suck Teddy Roosevelt!" This might make sense if you've seen the presidents races at RFK (and no, I wasn't drinking).

Pre-game, I was in earlier than ever as the place opened early for season ticket holders. I've never seen the team come out of the dugout en mass and stretch. I saw the same guy I mentioned yesterday--Kevin, a Mets fan from Alaska. I told him about this forum and I hope he joins us. During the game, the same drunk, angry Mets fan was in the row in front of me... although his lovely wife wanted me to know that he wasn't drunk, just angry. At one point, he put on a Mets jersey and a bag over his head.

Big picture, it was a terrific game. However, I'm not ready for the big picture at this time.

His wife was convinced that Randolph's bullpen choices were about him thinking he was Joe Torre. I'm not sure what that meant. Maybe she means that Willie is counting on some of his pumpkins in the bullepn turning into crystal coaches in the post-season as happened with Torre in the late nineties.

Benjamin Grimm
Sep 19 2007 07:19 AM

The brutal fact is that Willie doesn't have a lot of good options when he has to hand the ball to somebody in the fifth or sixth innings.

I still have a reasonable amount of faith in Feliciano, Heilman, and Wagner. (Is Wagner still with the club?) But Sosa, Mota, Schoeneweis, and Sele are all undependable. Smith, Collazo, and Humber haven't done much, at least recently. What Willie really needs is some seven- or eight-inning starts. More than anything else, I think middle relief has been killing this team lately.

Problem is that that "look in the eyes" stuff didn't seem to affect Maine when he stepped up in a must-win NLCS game 6, or even just a week or so ago when he shut down the Braves in a game we absolutely needed coming off the earlier Phils' sweep.

I'm always leery of those kind of "I can tell" pronouncements from analysts.
I remember, for instance, how everyone in this town just KNEW that both Kenny Rogers & Jeff Weaver were going to melt in their 2006 playoff efforts on account of having to face NYC teams. Didn't quite work out that way.

But, to play devil's advocate, maybe Maine DID have the look in his eyes last year in Game 6. He may have been pitching with more confidence last October than he is now.

He really has little reason to have much confidence right now. He's fighting through a very extended period of awful, with only a few scattered exceptions.

Maine is quite so he must be a bottler, that's silly talk,Jose Lima is loud and brash on the mound ,doesn't make him great.

A bottler? We'll have to add that term to the metirish glossary.

Hershiser's point was more about poise than about noise. It was about confidence and determination, not brashness.

I'm down with 2007 Scot Schoenweis turning into 1996 Graham Lloyd

Yeah, that dude was one angry Met fan.

That drunk dude behind us wearing that blue #20 football jersey was a nut, wasn't he? He went after some dude in a MFYs Sheffield jersey.

55-year-old lout in Billy Sims Lions jersey picking a fight with a 30-year old goof in a Gary Sheffield Yankees jersey. Who do you root for?
