IGT 09/19/07 - Mets at Nationals

Kid Carsey

Ok, so I'm a little eager ...

NYM: M. Pelfrey (2-7, 5.23)
WAS: M. Chico (5-8, 4.61)

Arizona fall league?

I know they wear their team uniforms for those games, but matching caps.

AZ fall league is correct. That also explains his No. 39 jersey. (he wears 34 with the real club).

The Mets are shaking things up. In the first inning they go 1-2-3.

MASN showed a graphic that stated the 21 runs that the Nationals have scored the past 2 games are the most runs in consecutive games that the team has scored since they moved back to DC.

Ouch.

Great job guy!

In St Loo Phils outfielder Werth has his feet taken out from under him from loose turf while tracking down a fly with bases loaded...

Whats up with the outfield turf in Busch?

And Phils third baseman Nunez is fielding like Brooks Robinson.
I've seen him steal at least 3 hits tonight, the last just now on a grounder chopped over his head that he made a fantasic leaping grab of.

And Charlies smart enough to remove Burrell in left in this close game and late inning.
Werth just catches a beebee to left .I wonder what Burrell would have done with that.

Yes.
Even Sarge who broadcasts for the Phils now said before the game, "The Mets have to focus and start doing the little things right."

In the Phils 9th Rollins is ROBBED by Spezio on a looked to be extra base hit down the 1st baseline. Phils had 2 on at the time, 2 out, and they are turned away.

Now the Cards have 1st and 3rd,1 out, bottom of the 9th.

Notes:

I'd say that Farmer Ted makes a better seating companion than Valadius or bfmc1, but the fact is a slump-busting win featuring a bullpen salvation beats slump-extending losses featuring bullpen meltdowns.

Things Bubba Ted and I learned tonight:

The Loge actually has seats with an "LA" intertwined logo pressed into the ironwork, like RFK actually bought up surplus seats from an old LA stadium.

Moises Alou, during pitching changes, leaves the field and goes into the bullpen to sit down and drink some water.

Guy Conti is as nice a guy as you want him to be. After the game we cheered on the Mets bullpen and wished them luck. They all kept their heads down until Guy trailed up the rear and said, "Thanks, do you want a ball?" And a ball is what Bubba Ted got to bring home to the family.

I want my daughter to marry Guy Conti.

UMDB and Uni-Watch Alert: Tom Ñieto actually wears a tilde above the initial N in his name on his back. Never saw that before.

Sosa was awesome and him being awesome was one of the best things ever. Highlight from the post-game wrap:

"Manny, it's not like your team didn't have chances to score. The sixth, for instance, what happened there?"

"Jorge Sosa won the game for them is what happened. He was astounding. That was the ballgame right there."

Gwreck
Sep 19 2007 10:59 PM

'preciate the wrapup from the in-person perspective. Thanks. Glad you got a win(!)

My outlook is so much brighter this morning, especially once I learned of the Phillies' loss last night!

Incidentally, when pasting box scores this morning I discovered that Justin Maxwell is the first Mets opponent ever with the last name of Maxwell.

Strange that it took 46 years for them to play against a Maxwell.

Johnny Dickshot
Sep 20 2007 07:04 AM

Maxwell in the da house!

Yeah, I noticed that weird Nieto thing.

Sosa's hugeness not only killed the Nats but it saved our entire season. Biggest inning of the entire year.

Not for nothing but for a guy who gave up way too many hits and runs in almost every inning, it seemed, Pelfrey looks a lot better to me than he did earlier this year. There's a shot they gave of him from the center field camera showing his form and follow-through right to the end, and I thought: There's a classick motion I could get used to seeing over and over again for the next few years.

I'm pretty certain we didn't see an Ñ on Ñieto 's back in the eighties.

Here's a batting practice jersey --- from those creeps at Steiner --- that doesn't appear to have a tilde.

I want tons of Schaefer for Sosa.

I agree that, for a five-and-fly start, Pelfrey seemed to have it together. Until the sixth, he was mostly throwing strikes when he had to, keeping his 94-MPHer down.

Frayed Knot
Sep 20 2007 07:51 AM

The cool thing about Sosa's first inning was not just that he got out of a 1st-&-3rd/no outs situation but that he wrapped it all up in 4 pitches:
strike - strike - strike - GiDP (to the fastest player on the team)

Edgy DC
Sep 20 2007 08:03 AM

He's one of the fastest in baseball. Nook is a throwback, out of the 300-year-old deep-south colony of Natchez, MS. He's fast as light but with almost nothing in the way of secondary skills. He made some weak-assed throws Tuesday night and when Carlos Gomez, as the tying run, went from first to third in the ninth inning on a single, more Mets fans than I were kinda sorta rooting for Alomar to go nuts and send him home.

But when you see a guy name Nook run like that, you really want to like him, so they keep giving him chances, only to see him lose his job to the likes of Curtis Granderson. He's finally been rewarding them with some hitting the last 7-8 weeks, but that just elevated him from Jeff Duncan status to Chris Duffy status.

The long-winded point being that staying out of double plays is like the guy's primary offensive skill.

Edgy DC
Sep 20 2007 08:16 AM

Fan Graphs rates Pelf's effort as a net negative, but Sosa as the shizzle.

Sep 24 2007 01:18 PM

Belated as it is, I'm just back off the road. Things I learned from the game:

*Edgy is the King of Box Truck driving.
*Edgy's GPS system is better than On-Star.
*When Edgy says you can get from the Mezz to the box seats in left, no usher is going to stop you, especially if he looks like one of the kids from New Edition.
*We saw Darryl Strawberry AND Lenny Dykstra at the game (at least dead ringer throwback jerseys).
*The young buck next to us in the Mezz looked like he was dating Meadow Soprano (God, to be 17 again).
*Have Edgy tell you great stories about the RFK "Tarp of Fame".
*RFK gave the out-of-town scoreboard operator the rest of the season off.
*Not only does Edgy feed the homeless, he volunteers hauling Pepsi carts around RFK.
*One usher asked the entire front row of the Mezz to pipe down because the players in the Mets bullpen were getting annoyed. Funny thing was, we (like the rest of the stadium) were dead quiet at that point. We presumed it was Sosa narc-ing on the fans, but he gets a pass for the blazing stuff he threw.
*To reiterate, Guy Conti is God.

In all a good night. Glad we were there to see the Mets stop the bleeding. Edge is the host with the most.
