Let's get rid of that pesky half-game.

metsmarathon
Sep 24 2007 04:45 PM

um, let's add another pesky half game to the one we already have!

Valadius
Sep 24 2007 04:58 PM

Not Gomez again...

TransMonk
Sep 24 2007 05:00 PM

This may have been the first time I've looked at a lineup and lamented Milledge not being in it.

Gomez will need to look alive.

Valadius
Sep 24 2007 05:06 PM

Come on, Pelfrey! Go out there and throw some strikes!

A Boy Named Seo
Sep 24 2007 05:17 PM

Sweet little diving play by Wright to end the top half. Pelfrey looked good, peppering the corners. That first pitch slider to Zim looked a little flat, though.

Out of habit, I went for the fast-forward on the Tivo and got denied. First live game for me in a good while.

LGM!

Jose walks to open the game for the Mets = Good.

Jose gets thrown out stealing second = Not so good.

It seems Jose's stolen base success rate has been plummeting of late.

Valadius
Sep 24 2007 05:23 PM

It seems like all of Jose's game has been plummeting.

Valadius
Sep 24 2007 05:26 PM

Come on Moises! Go for 28 baby!

Rockin' Doc
Sep 24 2007 05:28 PM

With the way Chico is throwing right now, it would appear that patience would be the key to really lighting him up for some runs. The Mets just need to wait for him to fall behind, then jump on his 84-85 mph fastball when he's forced to throw a strike (assuming he can).

TransMonk
Sep 24 2007 05:35 PM

Pelfrey showing some good stuff out there.

TransMonk
Sep 24 2007 05:41 PM

Sac Fly Gomez. He gets it done where he didn't yesterday.

A Boy Named Seo
Sep 24 2007 06:07 PM

Nice play, Alou.

That Austin Kearns looks a lot like Aaron Heilman.

Actually kinda creepy.

Rockin' Doc
Sep 24 2007 06:42 PM

I would like to see less promise and potential from Pelfrey and more actual performance. I know that he won't turn 24 until January, but he just doesn't seem to be improving in his performance level the past two seasons.

Rockin' Doc
Sep 24 2007 06:44 PM

Oh yeah, it's 5-1 Nationals through five innings.

TransMonk
Sep 24 2007 06:54 PM

Shitfuck.

Our bullpen still sucks. Joe Smith is not immune.

Frayed Knot
Sep 24 2007 06:54 PM

Hey I got a good idea ... let's give up some more walks followed by 2-out hits.

Rockin' Doc
Sep 24 2007 06:56 PM

Joe Smith on in relief of Pelfrey with two gone in the fifth and runners on first and second for the Nationals. Smith gets a groundball to third to end the inning. Unfortunately, it's after giving up a double to Belliard to drive in both the free pass recipients.

Pelfrey issued 5 walks in 5.67 innings of work. That's begging for trouble.

Mets chase Chico with a run and some baserunners in the 6th.

Conine (check that, Green) to face Rivera with 2 on 1 out.

Rally time...

Wake up, got another day to get through now
Got another man to see
Got to call him on the telephone
Got to find a piece of paper

Sit down, got another letter to write
Think Ill got to get the letter just right
Theres a ringing on the telephone
Oh no, got to write a little later
No such day as tomorrow, only one two three go!

Time - got the time tick-tick-tickin in my head
Time - got the time tick-tick-tickin in my head
Time - got the time tick-tick-tickin in my head
Tickin in my head, tickin in my head, tickin in my head

If I tell you what Im doing today
Will you shut up and get out of my way?
Someone asked me what the time is,
I dont know
Only know I gotta go now

No time - trying to get a watch repaired
No time - never got a thing to wear
Hear the ringin of the telephone no no
Hear a ringin in my head now
No such thing as tomorrow, only one two three go!

Time - got the time tick-tick-tickin in my head
Time - got the time tick-tick-tickin in my head
Time - got the time tick-tick-tickin in my head
Tickin in my head, tickin in my head, tickin in my head

The Mets need a big hit now. It will be up to Conine, hitting for Smith, since I have little faith in Reyes driving in runs at this point.

The Nationals counter with righthander Saul Rivera.

Rockin' Doc
Sep 24 2007 07:07 PM

Willie burns Conine and sends up Green in his place.

Any help on the action would be appreciated. Gameday and Gamecast both still have Green batting with a 2-1 count. They have obviously both froze up so I'm clueless as to what's happening now.

Frayed Knot
Sep 24 2007 07:17 PM

Green walked
Reyes bounced out - run scored - runners to 2nd & 3rd
Castillo bounced out to end the inning after an 11 pitch AB

7-3 after 6 -- but we needed more runs that inning.

SteveJRogers
Sep 24 2007 07:18 PM

Simba Sighting, Ted Simmons, now a Padre scout was spotted in the front row.

I thought the Geico commercial spoofing the Beverly Hillbillies was clever.

Rockin' Doc
Sep 24 2007 07:19 PM

Gameday has finally started running again. I see that Green walked to load the bases. Reyes grounded out to shortstop to bring one run home. I guess I should be happy he didn't pop up and strand everyone. Unfortunately, Castillo grounds out to end the threat.

The Mets just needed one hit to really get back into this game, but Reyes and Castillo were unable to deliver.

Upon edit: Thanks for the update Frayed Knot. You posted it while I was typing this post.

We need to chip away some more this inning.

SteveJRogers
Sep 24 2007 07:30 PM

1 out, Beltran on first for Alou in the 7th

SteveJRogers
Sep 24 2007 07:32 PM

FYI its now 28 games for Alou, who skies out as I type and Beltran on second for Delgado.

Alou got his hit in the 6th.

Delgado strikes out

Rockin' Doc
Sep 24 2007 07:37 PM

Try getting a little bigger chip next time guys.

SteveJRogers
Sep 24 2007 07:37 PM

Not a lot of juice at Shea, and Gary & Keith remarked it seems to show in the players as well.

Better not be this way the rest of this series, to say nothing about the homestand. Rough road trip or not.

The Nationals chip away at Mota as Belliard doubles in another Washington run.

I don't like Gomez's cut just yet, but he seems to have a good eye.

OE: He chases a ball and Ks just as I submit.

Dave Williams sighting here in the ninth.

We're gonna need Reyes under any circmustances.

Castillo? Going from first to third in the ninth down by 10?
Tying run seven batters behind Beltran at the plate.

On another board discussing how this team, baring an championship conclusion, just might be the least fondly recalled Met postseason team. I suggested over 1988 and was told emphatically, no, not even close.

So doing some quick research I have come to this conclusion.

The 1988 New York Mets would absolutely destroy the 2007 Mets!

Johnny Dickshot
Sep 24 2007 08:39 PM

The '88 Mets ruled the universe.

SteveJRogers
Sep 24 2007 08:43 PM

When was the last time a MLB team ONLY used 15 hurlers and 7 starters all year long? With Gene Walter and Edwin Nunez as the only real "shaky" pen guys and David West as the only "lets give the young guy a shot" guy.

Rockin' Doc
Sep 24 2007 08:47 PM

We will soon have seen the last of the Mets for the year if they don't win a few games. This team unfortunately peaked in April and May when they went 34-18. Since June, the Mets have barely been a .500 club as they have gone 53-51 counting tonights debacle.

I really can't decide if the team greatly overachieved last season when they buried the remainder of the National League or whether they are grossly underachieving this season. I keep thinking it is a combination of both. The team overachieved in a magical season last year and now most of the roster finds that they can't duplicate the production of last season. As a result the team's overall performance greatly suffers.

What was it BretSalaDocQ used to say?

You're never as good as you think you are when you're winning and you're never as bad as you think you are when you're losing.

SteveJRogers
Sep 24 2007 08:50 PM

Heh, just thinking now, its going to be strange in 2009, the 40th anniversary of 1969 (uh sorry Yance, MFS62 and others) and doing the celebration in the new ballpark. That would have a odd twinge to it.

Should have had Mahmoud Ahmadinejad throw out the first pitch.

Yeah, I heard it was Reyes idea to walk 9 batters.

Seriously, scapegoating anyone on the offense for this loss is specious. Any time a team scores 4 runs and outhits the opponent they should be able to win or at least be close.

I wasn't scapegoating the offense, I was scapegoating Reyes! I don't think he should be counted as part of the offense anymore.

All starting when the first baserunner of the game erased himself.
After that it was all downhill from there.

I was at that silly game last night. Once a year through my wife's company I get crazy good seats between the third base dugout and home plate and last night was it. Chico looked eminently hittable but Frayed is right, that caught stealing seemed to set the tone. I do seem to bring out the worst in the Mets, I think I've now lost 10 of the last 12 games I've been to, all the while they've been a winning team. Sheesh.

Edgy DC
Sep 25 2007 09:38 AM

Williams might have been one of the failingist failures I've seen in a long Met time. Throwing a mopup inning, with almost nothing at stake for the team, but the last millimeter of his professional life on the line, with a favorable lefty-on-lefty matchup, he gives u a no-doubt-aboout-it jack to a guy suffering through easily the most impotent 2007 season of any established big-leaguer.
