My thoughts exactly.

Willie is sending him another message.

Kid Carsey - "...I've seen nothing on this but maybe Willie is sending him another message."

Something along the lines of, you lose control and act like an ass and I will bury you so deep on the depth chart that you will wish you were in Binghamton. Even if such a display of my authority cost the team to potentially lose games going down the stretch in a heated pennant race.

this is gonna be a fun game. i am looking forward to seeing these humber curveballs. seems like every other met throws a ton of sliders. it will be a nice change to see a curve or two.

Internet speculating on my part, I have no idea.

Could also be ...

* we can fuck this up without you, bro
* I don't trust you since you acted like that
* he's got the flu and they don't want anyone to know
* he really did hit on one of Willie's daughters at a function (as I think I also
internet speculated once) and Willie wants to see him castrated

Willie may not be expecting more than 5-6 innings from Humber, in which case Milledge (or Green) probably comes off the bench to PH and stay in the game. So it may not matter too much that Gomez is starting.

No, I don't think it makes that much sense to start a guy hitting .230 just so that you can pull him out of the game in the sixth. Just trying to figure out some logic behind the madness.

'Course, if Humber can go deeper into the game, so much the better.

Make believe that you're the manager of the Braves. Rollins has lead off w/a triple but your pitcher, Tim Hudson--a righty--gets Utley and Burrell. Howard, a lefty is up next. Don't you walk him? Nope. At least he only got a single.

metsguyinmichigan
Sep 26 2007 05:32 PM

Make believe you are the manager of the Mets. You've had Phillip Humber on your staff since the first week in September. Yet you give starts to Brian Lawrence and wear your bullpen down while the kid sits admiring the view of the home run apple from the seats near the tomato plants....

Nymr83

i am with you there. i never see the point of playing replacement level or worse retreads when kids with upside need experience.

Nymr83
Sep 26 2007 05:36 PM

For a team out of contention, the Reds sure have a quick hook... Tom Shearn was yanked after only 38 pitches in the first inning after allowing 4 runs on 2 homers (to Berkman and Lee), a double, an infield single, and 2 walks.

Have you guys ever been this down about the team? Maybe after game 7 last year but never in the regular season. This is an historic collapse, and yeah, it can turn around tomorrow but why should it? Pedro isn't going 9 so eventually, the bullpen door opens and all hell breaks loose. It's not the hitting, despite Reyes' struggles, it's all pitching. Other than Ollie last Saturday, the starters can't go 7 or 8 and the bullpen can't do anything right. We sensed it in the off-season when Omar didn't get another starter, but we said "In Omar We Trust." He lost Bradford when the stupid Orioles gave him 3 years and the Mets wouldn't but we fell in love with Joe Smith. We sensed that something was wrong when he gave Mota 2 years but, again, we trusted Omar. That fat faced, smug, jerk Boden (they keep showing him on MASN sitting in the box seats) wanted F. Martinez or Gomez and Humber for Cordero or Rauch. We said "too much" but if they had either, maybe the pen could have gotten a key out sometime last week. I think it's safe to safe that our trust in Omar has greatly diminished.

I'm venting and rambling and I apologize, but it's like seeing the same game, over and over, for two weeks straight. 3 and a half hours of hell.

I do hear ya bmfc1. I do.

Damn, do I miss Sanchez.

I feel empty, I will put my faith in Pedro though.

If the Mets and Braves both win tomorrow, things will be looking sunnier again, at least temporarily.

Distance yourself. Really. It helps.

Resign yourself to the probability that they won't be playing in October. Then if things work out, it will be a pleasant surprise.

Ass thoroughly kicked by Ronnie Belliard, overweight middle-infielding, no rangin', washed-up, ex-Brewer, Cardinal-ring-wearin', cousin of a Brave Ronnie Belliard.

And where the Hell did Pete Flynn go?

HA^
So, where do we stand?
Will O'Hern get a start over the weekend?

We have Pedro, Perez, Maine,...

Pelfrey's scheduled to go Sunday.

If we are still in this,...does he get that start?

This series, particualrly the last two games, have pushed me to the point of almost not caring anymore. The total collapse of this team down the stretch is embarrassing and has become too painful to watch (and I can't even see the games). I hold out very little hope that the Mets can hang on and stumble into the playoffs.

It's like they're trying to make each loss more painful than the one prior.

I hate this fucking team. I'm seriously considering not watching tonight's game.

I was at this fucking game.

It was like somebody threw a switch.

Once the Nats went ahead, the Mets went from free swinging world beaters to a team that was just so tight.

The Nats were taking pitches putting good swings on the ball and the Mets were hitting ground balls and pop flies.

There is no word to describe how bad the Met pitching has been and JD is right - there is an offensive issue. I tend to ignore it because, well, if you're scoring 6 runs a game it really shouldn't matter what your offensive shortcomings are.

Horrible, painful, stomach-turning loss.

They suck and there's no reason to be happy if they do stumble into October because they will get beat so damn bad so quick that we'lll all get whiplash watching it.

32 runs in 3 games given up to - again - the worst hitting team in baseball.

Amazing.

It's a little early yet, but out postmortem on this season will be interesting.

Bullpen has to be at the top of Omar's to-do list for the winter. And it will be a challenge.

Unless manager is at the top of his to-do list.

Unless GM is at the top of the Wilpons' to-do list.

Stomache sick. It's too much to do look that down that road right now.

They went down on six pitches in the 8th inning. Six!

I dunno, but, if they make the playoffs I'm willing to start with a clean slate. I also like tonite's matchups in terms of regaining some ground.

Soup did you hear the PA guy announce that Jim Smith was coming in from the pen to pitch for the Mets?

It was one of those nights again it seems.

No I didn't but nothing surprises me with this team anymore.

Yes. Things could look a lot more promising tomorrow morning.

If the Mets clinch tomorrow (which is actually possible!) they could rest their bullpen for four full days. (In Saturday and Sunday's games they could use non-postseason guys like Williams and Humber and Muniz to eat innings as needed.) Maybe a chance to rest and catch their breaths would give the Mets new life in the NLDS.

It's always darkest before the dawn, they say. I wish, though, that I was as optimistic as I sound in this post!

I managed to miss this game entirely as I was at a Steve Earle show at Town Hall. On the subway going home I see a father and son wearing Mets gear. I ask them how it went and they spluttered on about the indignities of it all. I was so glad that I hadn't seen any of it.

Can you go back and ask Steve Earle (or, for that matter, the father and son) if they can pitch?

At another Earle show I went to he mentioned having a Yankee bathrobe. He also appeared on a TV show about politics in music wearing a Yankee shirt.

That's disappointing.

Not shocking. Going from playing clubs with names like the Dirty Glass and the Ol' Corral to playing Town Hall and the Kennedy Center is clue enough. Freakin' NPR darlings making my sicker than the Mets.
