He's comin' to town!

Not Santa Claus, but Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

(I didn't spell that on my own; I pasted it from a news story.)

The Daily News (and, I assume, the Post) has been howling in outrage for the last few days about, first, his intention to visit Ground Zero and second, his visit to Columbia University.

How much of that outrage do you share?

I better understand the outrage over Ground Zero. It's disrespectful for those who died there to have a terror-loving zealot place a wreath there.

I'm not upset about the Columbia thing, though. He's not being given an honorary doctorate or anything like that. The way I look at it, he's being put on display so that members of the community can get a good up close look at an important newsmaker and can see first hand who and what he is.

I don't see what's wrong with that.

Agree with all that,I think he is being made out to be more important than he actually is,all the attention he gets from the west elevates his position ,isn't he more a figure head in Iran? The Ayatollah being the real power.

I think the hysteria is way way WAY over the top. Did you notice one of the students interviewed by the Snooze today was called "Lexi Kahn" ? Is someone taking the piss?

There's a slump. Scapegoats are needed. Columns must be written. Newspapers must be sold.

Columbia should be ashamed of itself. This is the same university where Jim Gilchrist was silenced by bullies (who i believe have yet to be punished) apparently they believe in freedom of speech only for anti-american supporters of terrorism like Ahmadinejad. law-abiding american citizens advocating the enforcement of existing laws need not apply.

The president of Columbia called Ahmadinejad a "cruel, petty dictator" to his face. So that's good.

Then why were Gilchrist's attackers not punished despite being identified s students at the school? why wasn't he invited back to give the speech that was physically interupted? actions speak louder than words, and columbia's actions indicate that the guy whose name i won't bother figuring out how to spell again i welcome while jim gilchrist is not.

Some idiocy today from the iranian dictator:

]"In Iran we do don't have homosexuals like in your country," he said, sparking loud laughter from the audience. "In Iran we do not have this phenomenon. I do not know who has told you we have it."

]"We love all nations. We are friends with the Jewish people. There are many Jews living in Iran with security," Ahmadinejad said

his english must not be very good, i think he meant to say UNDER security.

]"I was interested in expressing my sympathy to victims of tragedy," he said. "It's the responsibility of everyone to understand the root causes of 9/11."

the root cause of 9/11 is too large a group of people in his part of the world that says its ok to strap a bomb to your chest and blow up civilians to advance your political goals... the conquest, by force if necessary, of the entire world by an extremist version of islam.

]Ahmadinejad said the world needs to build a better future "based on peace and security of all humanity," and he spoke of a world full of love, kindness, beauty and allegiance to God as the ultimate goal.

stop threatening to wipe sovereign nations off the map while developing a nuclear arsenal and you'll be one step closer to that goal. not arming terrorists in iraq, lebanon, and the israeli-occupied terroritories would help too.

]"The press plays a connecting role. It provides information and can serve as a channel for promoting current thinking,"

except, of course, for the press in iran, where you get closed down permanently for not saying exactly what he wants you to say

]He defended Iranian women as among the most free in the world, and said they were involved in all walks of life in Iran.

he said that with a straight face?

I don't know and don't care. That's an irrational distortion of the sort that makes this silly and keeps a person outside the conversation.

I was watching some of it while I was at the gym today. He gave his answers in his native tongue and the translator translated them into English

]We love all nations. We are friends with the Jewish people. There are many Jews living in Iran with security," Ahmadinejad said

Funny, later he said that the only nation Iran won't talk to diplomatically is Israel.

The Senate today passed a resolution (76-22) condemning Iran... McCain and Obama weren't there, among the presidential candidates Hillary voted for the resolution while Dodd and Biden voted against it. All NY and NJ senators voted for the bill while scumbags Kerry, Kennedy, and Feingold, and that crazy socialist from Vermont predictably voted against it.
I know how McCain would have voted, but he and Obama should really be around to take a stand on things like this.

Question for Namor:

In your view, are Kerry, Kennedy and Feingold scumbags because they voted against it, or did they vote against it because they're scumbags? Similarly, is the crazy socialist "crazy" because he's a soclialist, or is he a socialist because he's crazy?

they're scumbags already which is how i knew i'd see them on the list of "no" votes before i even looked.

but props to hillary, she did something right for once even if theres no force behind it

In his book "Keep the Aspidistra Flying", George Orwell noted that every intelligent boy of 16 is a socialist.
Of course, there's tons of irony (or is it sarcasm?) implied in that statement.

The Daily News is heating this story up again, as Mahmoud Ahmadinejad wants to make another visit to New York. I'm guessing he saw how I compared Yankee Stadium to a terrorist mosque and he wants to see it for himself.
