What a game this is! Matsui just drove in the 6-5 go-ahead with a sac fly.

Ex-Factors:

SD:
Heath Bell
Mike Cameron, sitting out hurt for...
Brady Clark (had his greatest game as a Met in Colorado, if I recall correctly)

COL:
Jorge Julio
KazMatsui

Why I still love baseball:

Seth Smith.

He's a September call up who's had 7 MLB ABs. He gets the call from Clint Hurdle to pinch hit in the 6th inning of a tied one game playoff to decide who moves on facing the NL Cy Young front runner Jake Peavy.

Fucker hits a triple...then scores on the Matsui sac-fly.

Pretty cool.

I'm still a little out of sorts. Is this game going to determine both the Wild Card and the NL West all in one?

Johnny Dickshot
Oct 01 2007 07:55 PM

Just the Wild Card. The Dbags won the West.

Edgy DC
Oct 01 2007 07:56 PM

Both those trips might have died in Mike Cameron's glove.

This crowd is great.

Johnny Dickshot

Between Denver and Philly a lot of heroic baseball in the National League. The Rockies were buried deeper, later, than the Phillies ever were.

Here comes big butt Bell.

Edgy DC

Game tied by San Diego on a Matt Holiday boner.

MVP voters: this game counts.

G-Fafif

Seth Smith is a tongue-twister special.

Tonight's desperate rationalization: I wouldn't want to be part of any playoffs that would have Kaz Matsui as a member.

Isn't this Yorvit Torrealba character a FA this year?

I've heard good things.

Edgy DC
Oct 01 2007 08:28 PM

I like who we have better than Torrealba.

Heath Bell: cat-like reflexes.

Don't be a meathead. I like the Rockies becuz of Matsui.

Edgy DC
Oct 01 2007 08:40 PM

Yup.

Heath Bell is unstoppable --- four Ks in two innings. He has ability hanging over his belt.

Johnny Dickshot
Oct 01 2007 08:59 PM

Outta there now though. Doug Brocail

Can't imagine Coors Field hosts too many lengthy xtra inning games. This is just great.

I watched the game from 7:30 to 8, saw all the scoring in the first.

I watched the whole NBC Monday night lineup, Chuck, Heroes,Journeyman.
Only tuned in to the game on commercials.
Saw all the scoring during the commercials.
Everything from the granny to the flubbed fly by Holliday.
That tied it 6-6.

And the games still on.

Now thats amazin'.

Frayed Knot
Oct 01 2007 09:21 PM

Would be cool to see Helton win it.

Zvon
Oct 01 2007 09:24 PM

Does the air up there make people run slow?

Edgy DC
Oct 01 2007 09:26 PM

Helton should be on third. He got a late break.

It's tempting to run for him here, but I don't think I would.

Zvon
Oct 01 2007 09:28 PM

They also should have scored another on that single in the first.

Why Holliday stayed anchored to 2nd then was beyond me.
It was a liner 10 feet over the shortstops head on its way down.
That was a certain single.

These Rockies run like they got rocks in their drawers.

Johnny Dickshot
Oct 01 2007 09:41 PM

Doncha think the Rockies home unis should say ROCKIES and not COLORADO on the front?

The front and rear fonts clash too.

You are correct sir!

Hey its Jorge Julio. Lets see how this goes.

I was hoping the Rocks would keep that other pitcher in so we could see the Pads choppin Brocail eeeeee.

Johnny Dickshot
Oct 01 2007 09:56 PM

Julio

Edgy DC
Oct 01 2007 09:57 PM

They're just terrible all the way around. Vest-type uniforms are stupid enough, but if you are, what's the point of a black-on-black?

Zvon

Yea, I was rushin to get the joke up before Brocail was on the bus home.

Nymr83

2 runs for the padres in the top of the 13th, it appears that Jorge Julio has blown the Rockies season, may he live on forever as one of baseball's memorable goats.

Whats the soonest?
4 days rest?
5?

Nymr83
Oct 01 2007 10:04 PM

i'm sure he can go on 3 if they need it, hows their schedule work out? would using him on 3 allow him to start a 2nd time in the nlds?

Johnny Dickshot
Oct 01 2007 10:07 PM

I don't mind vest unis. Here's Kaz to make it right again.

Frayed Knot
Oct 01 2007 10:09 PM

Here's Trevor to try to redeem himself.
Pads would have had this wrapped up on Saturday until he gave up a 2-out/2-strike run-scoring triple to, of all people, Tony Gwynn Jr.

Johnny Dickshot
Oct 01 2007 10:10 PM

And he doubles off Hoffman to lead it off. The Big Bats will have a chance to tie it.

Oh, the series starts Wednesday and there's an off day Friday.
So he will go Saturday or Sunday I figure.

That gives the Phils a nice edge, ...no chance of seeing him twice.
Well, possibly in relief I guess.

Matsui doubles!
If the Rocks tie this I'm gonna be ticked off.
If they come back and win though that would be okay.

What is the deal with umps these days???!

He either should have called that the second the ball broke free, or call him out when he was tagged.
It tells me that the ump didn't see Holliday touch the plate.
WTF!?

No, No argument, no fight, not even an issue.
I just saw it clearly on the replay.

But the ump made a delayed call, and I don't understand this.
The ball got lose real quick, a bungled shorthop.

G-Fafif
Oct 01 2007 10:26 PM

Electric ending. Horrible call.

I heard myself rooting for Kaz. Who knew?

Zvon
Oct 01 2007 10:27 PM

And Holliday is on the ground bleeding with the trainer while the team jumps all over the field in celebration.

They say he had to be carried off?

Bizarre.

Gwreck
Oct 01 2007 10:28 PM

Here's hoping they continue this streak and sweep the Phillies.

Todd Helton was 3rd on the active list of "games played without a postseason appearance." (Jeff Cirillo is 1st -- not sure if he's on the DBacks postseason roster. Damion Easley is 2nd).

Johnny Dickshot
Oct 01 2007 10:28 PM

He's better than our 2nd baseman.

Zvon
Oct 01 2007 10:28 PM

Maybe the ump knew I wanted to hit the sack.

Me too.

He got a bad rap here -- but handled it well and I don't think we ever thought he wasn't trying hard (which is really the only unforgivable thing a player can do on the field).

ESPN is now doing a thing calling for video replay for calls in baseball.

I still say no to that.
Just get some people who know how to ump!

I can't believe I turned off the TV after Julio gave up the homer. I was pulling for the Rockies too.

Even as I was closing my eyes, I was telling myself "No lead is safe in Denver..."

Iubitul
Oct 02 2007 05:04 AM

That was an amazing game - I'm glad I didn't listen to myself, and decided to watch the last few innings...

That being said, Halliday still hasn't touched the plate - the umpiring lately has been atrocious. And I have to admit, I rather enjoyed watching Hoffman cough it up like that..

Johnny Dickshot
Oct 02 2007 06:48 AM

It was karmic payback for the umps getting Hawpe's HR wrong earlier.

Edgy DC
Oct 02 2007 07:17 AM

I was actually enthused to see Hoffman coming into the game. Here, at the end of all things, is he going to get tagged with a "can't handle a big spot" label?

Who were you prouder of --- Matsui or Bell?

While I agree that Holliday didn't touch the plate, I'm not, the next morning, 100% confident that a finger didn't sneak under the shin. I'll give the ump the benefit of the doubt on that one, but MVP-guy deserved his bloody nose. That's why we teach kids that you can't go hands against shin guards.

Something I've said before --- the extra two umps in the post season are wasted by positioning 80 feet behind the base umps. From there, they can little improve on the perspective of the base umps for fair-foul calls down the line or for catch-trap calls on line drives. Position them back by the foul poles, so they get homer calls right, and they get fair-foul calls at the pole right.

I watched this game to the end - fun game, exciting. Reminded me to some extent of Game 6 against Houiston in '86. Long extra inning game, back and forth, everything on the line. Fun.

The more I think about this, the more I'm cool with McClellan's call. If Holliday didn't touch the plate, it's because he was knocked off his trajectory by the catcher. If the catcher knocked him off the plate, he's safe on catcher interference because the fielder only has a right to that basepath if he's in possession of the ball, which he wasn't.

This does not explain the delay in making the call.
It should have been quicker.
