Are You Listening, Omar?

Omar, get a pen, and write this down.

You miscalculated. You didn't plan far enough ahead. When the pitchers started to tire, you didn't have any fresh arms available for Willie to use.

We need to develop our own relievers. Make that a priority. And let's get some more offensive talent, too. Delgado isn't getting any younger, and sooner or later we'll need a new full-time left fielder. I have no faith in Carlos Gomez, but I'll give him another chance if he improves.

We need to go out and acquire some guys. I've got a wish list:

Micah Owings - best-hitting pitcher in the big leagues. He's good enough to be available as a pinch-hitter, or if we convert him into a long reliever, we don't have to pinch-hit for him. That's valuable.

Dontrelle Willis - available at a reduced price. If Peterson really is the wizard he makes himself out to be, he can be fixed.

A defensive infield whiz - somebody like John McDonald, who can play all over the infield and spell Wright or someone else in late innings of games we're winning.

A knuckleballer - because we need more variety in our pitching staff.

A catcher who calls a good game - we need a catcher who works well with the pitchers and makes smart decisions. Hitting helps, but it's secondary.

A better bullpen - I don't care what it takes, we need more talent in the bullpen.

Because I want my season to hinge on at-bats from a long reliever.

This is the same argument as "I wanted Mike Hampton back because he could hit."

Thankfully, it's really in baseball's best interest to have every team in the major leagues just dump their cheap, major-league ready young players to the Mets and for them to also take on all our onerous contracts. I'm so glad they tweaked the rules to allow Omar to make trades like he's playing computer baseball, with no regard to reality.

Oh hush. I just had to vent. And my requests aren't that outlandish. It's not like I'm one of those guys on the FAN saying the Mets should get A-Rod and Pujols and Holliday and Magglio, etc. These can realistically be done.

And what makes you so sure that Dontrelle Willis is "available at a reduced price?"

Get a catcher. Fix the bullpen. Trade Schoeneweis to Pittsburgh for a prospect.

I don't know how Omar will get through the winter without you.

A modern day warrior
Mean, mean wine
Today's Tom Seaver
Mean, mean vine

Though his mind is not for rent
Don't put him down as arrogant
His reserve, a quiet defense
Riding out the day's events
The vineyard...

What you say about his company
Is what you say about the winery
Catch the mist, catch his pitch
Catch the Franchise, wealthy bitch

The world is, the world is
Love and life are deep
Maybe as his thighs are wide

Today's Tom Seaver
Got a niche with you
With the name he trades
He gets rich on you

No his mind is not for rent
To Fox, ESPN
Always smooth, yet discontent
He knows fans aren't worth contempt!
But Grant is

What you say about his company
Is what you say about royalty
Catch Bob Feller, Dizzy Dean
Catch Steve Carlton, what a scene

his world is, his world is
Cash and fame are deep
Maybe as his thighs are wide

Exit the warrior
Today's Tom Seaver
He gets high on you
And the energy you trade
He gets right on to the friction of the day

Also Omar, sign ARod, Pujols, Oswalt, and Peavy for a combined $5 million.

And grant peace on earth.

The thing about "Tom Sawyer" is that it works without changing any words besides "Sawyer" into "Seaver."
