Baseball Alternatives on TV

Wifey and I found ourselves checking out the new TV lineups since the beloved Mets tanked. So far, Mad Men remains a keeper as does Heroes. Tell Me You Love Me (HBO) is quite intriguing and full of flesh, Pushing Daisies caught my attention, and Life is very interesting. The Geico Cavemen look to be taking a fall...they didn't even show previews after the premier. Wifey likes Back to You with Kelsey Grammer, too.

Eureka just wrapped up its second season on Sci Fi. How I Met Your Mother is a seriously under-appreciated sitcom on CBS - Neil Patrick Harris as Barney Stinson steals the show every time, and totally deserved the Emmy over Jeremy Piven.

I heard that Aliens in America was very funny, and have one or two episodes in my TiVo but haven't watched them yet. Same with Chuck on NBC.

Enjoying Damages on FX.

Also watching Heroes, House, 30 Rock, The Office, and Curb Your Enthusiasm as well as a few others.

Mondays (Heroes) and Thursdays (Survivor, The Office) are appointment/DVR viewing for us. Other than that, we can pretty much take or leave anything. We like to catch L&O:CSIVU when we can, but we know we'll always catch them on USA/Bravo/A&E/MTV6/Discovery down the road.

Haven't found anyone appealing or even interesting at Survivor yet.

That scene last nite where Dwight and Michael return to take back the fruit basket was one of the funniest ever on the Office however.

The end of the baseball season coincided nicely with the premeire of the 2nd season of Dexter on Showtime last Sunday. It's the only series I watch religiously, mostly because I seem to always be home on Sunday nights.

My wife and I got hooked last season and it's one of the only times during the week we can agree on an hour of TV.

Kitchen Nightmares on Wednesday nights on FOX, and nothing else just yet so a lot of reading on the couch. We watched the movie Ed Gein the other night on IFC, freaky psycho he was.

I reallly like 3 new shows, but I fear 2 of them may not be on long:

- Big Bang Theory on CBS, Mondays 8:30. Two geeks live across the hall from a hot blond. Hilarity ensues. The premise is nothing new, but I've laughed out loud throughout both episodes. Has not been well-received by critics.

- Journeyman on NBC, Mondays 10:00 PM. A reporter is randomly sent back in time to alter one person's life, except he doesn't know what he's supposed to do each time he is sent back. There's also a dead ex-fiancee who also time travels, who he meets on his "journeys". I like it a lot, it's sort of Quantum Leap meets Early Edition meets Reunion. But it's currently running third in its time slot behind CSI Miami and a new show on ABC.

- Reaper on CW, Tuesdays at 9. You just turned 21, you're a slacker, and you just found out your parents sold your soul to the devil. And now the devil wants his payment. Your job: recapture (with the help of your idiot friend) escaped souls from Hell. The good? You save real people's lives. The Bad? You're working for Satan. The guy who plays the devil is outstanding.

As far as returning shows, I always catch Survivor, and eagerly await the new seasons of 24 and Lost.

Good point; they do have a disproportionate number of dislikeable characters this year. Lots of wastes of space (blond skinny chick, Sister Christian, Jean-Robert, naked guy).

Really, though, it doesn't matter to us. As long as this show is never cancelled, ever, we'll keep watching.

Why bother on Survivor?

What is the difference between a gay Mormon and a gay Catholic or a gay Jew, seems lame to me that you announce yourself as a gay Mormon.

Well, the gay Mormon has different religious beliefs.

I haven't watched Survivor in years, so this is the first I heard about the gay Mormon. Did he (she) announce him(her)self as a gay Mormon?

Apart from different religious beliefs I would think they are the same.

I think he did but probably different have to. In fact he didn't even have to say he was a flight attendant. It's just obvious he is.

He thinks he's devious but already sees he can't outmuscle the muscle. This will allow him, maybe, to outlast Anorexia but he won't get much further.

Monday is a good night for NBC with Chuck, Heroes, and Journeyman. They all get TiVoed.

Also on my Tivo:

Ugly Betty - it had the best season ending episode of any show I watched last year.

Big Shots - Dylan McDermott seems to be having a lot of fun chewing up the scenery.

Boston Legal - I'm a sucker for William Shatner and James Spader - sue me.

24 - January can't get here fast enough.

I'm liking Torchwood on BBC America.

Mad Men is far and away the class of the field.

And I continue to enjoy World Poker Tour, though its appeal is starting to wane for me.

Frayed Knot
Oct 05 2007 09:00 PM

That 'Mad Men' thing lost me early on.
Maybe I gave up too quickly but Nothing ... Was ... Happening.

The set-up was OK; take Tom Wolfe's masters of the universe types - only make them 1960 ad-men instead of 1980s bond traders. And the initial show was there to show how different - and, by implication, bad - things were back then. Everybody smoked everywhere. Everyone drank everywhere. Working women were treated like dirt. No one drove with seatbelts and parents didn't raise an eyebrow as their kids played with plastic bags over their heads. Even the products the agency represented are all now cosidered evil: cigarettes, aerosol sprays, Richard Nixon.

But then show #2 seemed like they driving the same point home even harder. And then show #3 continued to show men behaving badly at work and at home with butts & booze. And then by show #4 I think I was gone.

The Wire is amazing. Each episode is available on Comcast On Demand the Monday before the episode airs so I can't wait to see episode 2 tonight. I started watching last season and every episode shocked me yet would also make me laugh at least once and I never looked at the clock to see when it would be over. I hope to watch the first 3 seasons when I buy the box set after this season is over.

This "McNulty fabricates a serial killer" storyline is a big risk. Out of everything they've done, this sounds the most like something you'd find in Miami Vice or some other cheesy cop show. I hope they get it right.

In other TV, is anyone watching American Idol? I caught part of the premeire last night. Usually the first couple episodes are kinda boring because you can only watch Simon ridicule bad singers so many times...but there were some good singers in there. The mother of the special needs child talking about her daughter made my wife cry.

seawolf17
Jan 18 2008 02:49 PM

It's like he was bored or something and just wanted to get out. Gene, for all his faults, is clearly a bright guy, so he wouldn't have done something stupid like he did last night unless he just didn't want to be there.

What's odd is that a megalomaniac like Gene Simmons would want to get out when he had however many more weeks of possible TV exposure.

Does anyone here watch In Treatment on HBO?

Does Gabriel Byrne portray the least ethical psychiatrist ever?

soupcan
Mar 02 2008 07:06 PM

I watched one episode of that and it bored me to tears.

I'm intrigued now though. Why is he unethical?

I downloaded the first two seasons of 'Weeds' for my iPod. Liked it so much we ordered Showtime to watch the current (3rd) season. Fantastic show.

Now that we have SHO, I've been dabbling in 'Californication' as well. Eh.

themetfairy
Mar 02 2008 07:10 PM

Not that I'm an expert in psychiatric ethics, but Paul (Gabriel Byrne) seems to be way too personal with his patients (even expressing love for a couple of them).

I loved the first season of Weeds, then I felt it meandered. Elizabeth Perkins steals the show, IMO.

Californication
didn't impress me at all.

The Tudors comes back for Season 2 at the end of the month - I can't wait for that, as well as for the next season of Penn & Tellelr's Bullshit series on Showtime.

Yeah - the second season of 'Weeds' wasn't so great. Season 3 gets it back on track. Elizabeth Perkins is great but the brother-in-law Andy and Kevin Nealon just crack me up.

That's how I feel about 'Californication'.

What a finale! Did you see that David Chase? You can use a song at the ending, wrap-up multiple story lines, leave a few things open in case you make a movie, and still provide a satisfying ending.
