SCHAEFER METS PLAYER AND PITCHER OF THE MONTH SEPTEMBER 2007

Although September of 2007 will almost certainly go down in history as one of the worst that the franchise has ever experienced, there were a few good performances to go along with the many that were bad.

SCHAEFER METS PLAYER AND PITCHER OF THE MONTH, SEPTEMBER 2007

The Schaefer Mets Player of the Month for September 2007 is CARLOS BELTRAN. This is Carlos' first win this season and third overall. Beltran led the Mets in September with 8 home runs, 22 runs scored and 27 runs batted in. Runners up David Wright and Moises Alou also had strong months. Alou led the team with a .402 batting average and a .607 slugging percentage. Wright batted .352 and slugged .602.

The Schaefer Mets Pitcher of the Month for September 2007 is PEDRO MARTINEZ. This is the sixth time that Pedro has been Pitcher of the Month. He previously won in each of the first four months of 2005 and in April of 2006. No other Mets pitcher has won this award six times. Pedro went 3-1 in September (as did Oliver Perez and Mike Pelfrey) and easily led the team with a 2.57 ERA. His 32 strikeouts were second to John Maine's 36.

Beltran and Martinez leading the Mets in a pennant race in September is exactly what Minaya had in mind three years ago. Sigh.

Carlos might feel a little like Richie Ashburn did after being voted the MVP on the worst team of all-time in 1962.

Well, the forum as a whole had Schoeneweis as the number two reliever of the month, behind Sosa, so your numbers aren't all that out there.

The guy with the 30-game hitting streak and the .402 batting average couldn't manage to finish above third place. Hopefully he wins a POTM or two next year.

He was leading the voting in mid-August when I went off on vacation and I prepared a vintage baseball card for him that I never got to use:

ugh... i was using the old formula for half of the month in that list. the new list shows schoeneweis (13 sp) as the #7 met for september. that certainly isn't right!

and heilman is down at 15th (8.5 sp - that's 35% more beer!)

i think the problem is two-fold. i give too many points which unfairly suppresses those who perform well in wins compared to those who perform well in losses. this primarily affects relievers, like schoeneweis, who got most of his opportunities in losing efforts in september. as a result, his points were not scaled down as much as would be another pitcher who performed the same level of effort in a win.

on an absolute scale, heilman got 41 points to schoeneweis' 57.2 points, which is better, but still 28% more.

while scotty [u:52cfdac11f]did[/u:52cfdac11f] inherit and strand 14 baserunners in the month, i'm not sure that merits more than aaron's month, y'know...

i'm quite clearly over-pointing for inherited runners stranded. if only my uber-spreadsheet were more useful, i could change that one value and see what it does to the total... but its a bitch... really, a bitch.

this is where all of scott's points came from in september, in case anybody cares.
