Jim Tracy Gone Again - Manager/GM changes

The bigger news is that Jon Schuerlholz looks to be stepping down.

So says Ken Rosenthal:

That's big news, there will be teams beating down his door to hire him.

That makes sense of why they broke so decisively with Andruw Jones, rather than have a protracted negotiation unlikely to go anywhere. This way Wren doesn't have to start his wreign as the guy who lost Jones.

Frank Wren
DOB: 3/17/1958
Hometown: St. Petersburg, Fla.
College: St. Petersburg (Fla.) JC

Assistant Director, Scouting - Montreal Expos 1987-1990
Assistant General Manager - Florida Marlins 1993-1995
VP / Assistant General Manager - Florida Marlins 1996-1998
General Manager - Baltimore Orioles - 1999

From Wikipedia: When Pat Gillick resigned as GM of the Orioles at the close of the 1998 season, Wren was recruited as his replacement. But the 1999 Orioles were a major disappointment. The club finished six games under .500 despite one of the highest payrolls in the game and the signing of free agent slugger Albert Belle to the most lucrative contract in baseball at the time. During the season, Wren was criticized publicly by Baltimore owner Peter Angelos and his family, and when the season ended, Wren was fired after less than a full year on the job.

VP / Assistant General Manager - Atlanta Braves - 2000-2007

Here's a nightmare: the MFYs fire Cashman and hire Schuerholz.

TransMonk

I suppose if Schuerholz were to leave Atlanta it would make it even easier for Glavine to return to the Braves if he wanted to. No more dancing around that alledged rift between the two.

Holy crap! What's the deal here, with Schuerholz, Jocketty, and Terry Ryan all stepping down at once?

Edgy DC

Sounds like normal turnover.

Except they're all very-long-tenured executives. I just think that's a little odd. GMs who've been with clubs 5 or 6 years is one thing. But three GMs with a decade-plus for their teams all going at the same time I find a bit strange.

That leaves two possible managing destinations for Joe Torre: St. Louis and Pittsburgh.

I can't imagine he'd go to Pittsburgh.

Trey Hillman's Fighters just knocked Bobby V's Marines out of the Japanese playoffs.

His team won the Japanese championship series in 2006 with Tsuyoshi "Mr. Sparkle" Shinjo on the roster. Hillman had announced in September that he was leaving Nippon at the end of the season in order to spend more time with his family. Hopefully he brings his family to KC.

You can't fight ham, you can only hope to contain it.

Seriously, could we get a MLB team to change its name to the Ham Fighters? I'd buy that merchandise.

Actually, the name of the team is Fighters, and it's owned by Nippon Ham. (Japanese teams are named after the owners instead of cities. Think Anehiser-Busch Cardinals, the Tribune Cubs or Senile Egomaniac Yankees.)

I don't remember what kind of manager Tony Peņa was for the Royals, only that he had a great first season before crashing and burning.

Do you think he's up for the Pirate job? He sounds kind of oafish (though clearly a baseball lifer) in his conference call here after the Yankee interview.

First question: Bryan Hoch.

That really puts the lie behind Hank's bluff, doesn't it? Is he going to play that card with Pettitte, Posada, etc. --- implying that they have a lesser claim to a plaque insignia, and maybe won't be welcome back for Oldtimey Day or some shit.

(Agent)Hey, Hank, you don't know anything about anything and had only a passing interest in this business until recently. You've accomplished nothing in the field yet, so I'd invite you to worry about your own damn legacy as the guy who ruined the Yankees. Put your money on the table or get stuffed.(/Agent)

What shocks me more than anything is that Mattingly would leave the Yankees. The only reason I can see for him joining the Dodgers is that his son is currently in their farm system.

Or that he truly wants to manage some day and the best way to achieve that is to keep your hand in the game.
Having a star status with one team was enough to get him his first dugout job after following his playing career with a decade or more out on his farm in Indiana. But now that they've taken the job he wanted and given a 3-year contract to someone a baseball generation younger than him it's not like anyone else is going to chase after him unless he's a working baseball guy.

Am i missing something here , when did it become OK to negotiate a contract when the current manager was still in place? Seems like Little got treated very poorly here, insulting even.

Edgy DC

It's always been OK. It's just never been cool. So people don't openly do it.

Grady Little tells the Dodgers, "You can't fire me, I quit." Good for him.

Torre claimed that a one year incentive laden deal to remain with the Yankees was insulting to him, so he walked. I wonder how he feels about how the Dodgers (and Torre himself) disrespected Grady Little by negotiating a deal for a position that was still occupied at the time.

Here's something interesting I saw. Dodger managers W-L pct at the time they were fired/retired:

Little, 2006-2007 (.525)
Tracy, 2001-2005 (.527)
Johnson, 1999-2000 (.503)
Hoffman, 1998 (.534)
Russell, 1996-1998 (.537)
Lasorda, 1976-1996 (.526)
Alston, 1954-1976 (.558)
Chuck Dressen, 1951-1953 (.642)
Burt Shotton, 1947-1950 (.603)
Leo Durocher, 1939-1946, 1948 (.566)

You have to go back 70 years, to Burleigh Grimes' .434 winning % from 1937-1938 to find a Dodger manager under .500. Even small sample size guys Clyde Sukeforth (1947) and Ray Blades (1948) went a combined 3-0.

Yeah, those two guys rocked the Casbah last year. They shocked the monkey and passed the duchy at the same time.

The Pirates are still producing talented players; they just never seem to fail to make the wrong choice when deciding who to deal and who to keep. I'd love a job with the Bucs.

I forgot about them. Matt Capps also comes to mind.

I guess I'm more inclined to think of them as the type of team that trades for Matt Morris or signs Derek Bell to a fat FA contract.

Torre disappointing young Edgy by donning his Yankee six, instead of the nine he wore with the Mets, Braves, Cards, and, I assume, through most of his playing career.
