"Ends in S" for $500

There's a lot of blame to go around, and when that happens, you look upstairs. When I think of Omar's year what bugs me is that, when the whole Mets pitching staff got bonkered to the clown the last month, the reinforcements weren't there. You wanted to kill Willie for sending Mota out, but at times you had to say, "Who else is there?"

Three guys Omar brought in to shore up the staff --- that I was counting on to contribute something this season --- just weren't there for diffent reasons down the stretch.

Adkins, Burgos, Vargas --- a goose egg from all three. That's pretty distressing. I don't want to harp on one. But 0-3 makes me grumpy considering who was dealt. That's what I want to talk to Omar about.

The smallest contribution from any of them could have made the difference.

As I said yesterday, Vargas is the real baffler. He looked like someone who was capable of making a step up.

His minor league season didn't completely suck but he was of almost no help this year. I see where he underwent bone-spur surgery after the season but he's expected to be ready for Spring Training.

Anyway, my offseason project will be to telepathically will Jason Vargas to greater success in 2008.

As to Omar, I was shushed here for suggesting he go and get some experienced bullpenners at the deadline. He says he was in on Gagne but the price was high. Okay, but a Solomon Torres or some such might have been a decent consolation prize to shoot for. I definitely count that against him.

"Bonkered to the clown." You didn't coin that?

Maybe I did! Was that when I was trying to sound like Metirish?

Indeed. You must have been bonkered to the c. and forgotten.

You were just spackleknife then. I'm not chopping the fruit to say this whole thing sounds like we've gone to market with pocketfuls of bolloxed swordfish.

Well, thanks for remembering and keeping the dream alive!

EDIT: Your memory is remarkable:

I'd pay to hear Omar talk Irish, I look at the Indians pen with envy, homegrown guys like they have . I hope Smith benefits next season from this season and hopefully Sanchez gets back.

well, if they don't come back strong, we'll be swoggled to the knickers.

The baffler is Adkins, who didn't even get a chance (he pitched a total of one big-league inning this year). His numbers (2-4, 3.99 ERA) at Norfolk weren't awful, either.

They granted Adkins free agency.
