Born a Met/Died a Met

Frayed Knot

Born a Met is those who's first MLB game was in the blue & orange
Died a Met is the less obvious final game as a Met
Then there is the rare group who did both. One might even say that they're in the Krane Pool.

I just got to thinking about this realizing that Conine, Sele, and perhaps Glavine. Alomar & DiFelice will join the 'Died' list this (really next) year.
Meanwhile Gomez, Ambres & Smith were newly hatched Mets in '07,

If UMDB doesn't have lists like these for all-timers I bet it could come up with them fairly quickly. Might make for an interesting feature. Willie Randolph, for instance, is a D-a-M.

Yogi died a Met. Actually buried in Flushing, I believe.

I could probably come close.

I could get a list of players who played for the Mets in their final season. But it would include guys like Cleon Jones and George Foster who made a brief stop elsewhere (in both cases, the White Sox) before meeting their demise.

Some big names on this list. It even starts with a Hall-of-Famer.

(As I said above, this list has at least a few names that don't belong. I mentioned Cleon Jones and George Foster. Craig Swan is another who fits that category. So is Lee Mazzilli.)

And here are the births. Save caveats apply. A player who debuted with another team and then came to the Mets in the same season would be incorrectly included here. (Can't think of any offhand, but maybe I'll spot one or two once I read the list.)

]Pony Makes a Slam Dunk
Signs New York Knicks’ First Round Draft Pick

SAN DIEGO (October 4, 2007)—Pony International is getting back in the game—of basketball. Today, the company announced that it has signed an endorsement agreement with Wilson Chandler, the New York Knicks’ 2007 first-round draft pick, for the re-launch of its performance basketball line for the fall ’07 season.

“Wilson will be an excellent complement to the legacy of athletes that have endorsed Pony over the years,” Kevin Wulff, Pony president and CEO said. “He is an incredible talent with a knack for exciting fans with his dynamic athletic ability.”

Chandler seems eager to don his first pairs of Ponys. “I couldn’t be more excited to wear Ponys on and off the court in New York,” he said. “Pony is a classic brand and I am honored to be wearing the Chevron.”

This isn’t the first time Pony has been involved in professional sports. The brand, founded in 1972, was worn by prominent athletes such as basketball stars Spud Webb and David Thompson, soccer player Pelé, boxers Muhammad Ali and George Foreman, quarterback Dan Marino, baseball player Reggie Jackson and tennis player Tracy Austin.

Chandler was the New York Knicks' first-round draft pick this year.

“Wilson will be featured in a national advertising campaign that launches in October,” said Benjamin Woo, Pony’s vice president of marketing. “The campaign will run in magazines such as Sports Illustrated, ESPN, SLAM, STACK, Complex and many others.”

Today’s announcement is a major step forward for Pony. After numerous ownership changes within the past year, the brand’s re-launch is in full swing. In June, Wulff told WSAToday, “Pony has a tremendous brand heritage. Now, we’re taking it back to where it was on the performance side.”

The re-launch of Pony’s basketball line will include three key styles—the City Wings ’08, the Starter Mid ’08 and the Quix—modern performance athletic shoes that maintain their old-school attitude. Pony hopes the considerable buzz surrounding Chandler will boost its visibility.

“Many experts consider Chandler to be the steal of the 2007 draft,” Pony public relations and sports marketing director Colin Brickley said. “An extremely promising hybrid-forward standing at 6’8”, he is a powerhouse with rare athleticism.”

Chandler’s agent, Chris Grier Luchey of GCL Sports, added, “He is definitely the perfect caliber of player to create excitement around a legendary brand like Pony.”

For years the Mets required all-black shoes so any logos that did exist in those early days of logo-heavy shoes were blacked-out.

So what we need now is the intersection of those two lists, showing those who, as MLers, were Mets and only Mets.

There might be some "born and died" guys who went somewhere else in between. (Lee Mazzilli almost fit that category. And Tom Seaver SHOULD have. I can't think of any actual examples off the top of my head, though.)

Cool.

There's 101 of them, by my count, or about 12% of the total who ever suited up -- probably a bit higher than I expected.
What's NOT unexpected is that most of them were real short-timers to the point where I'm guessing that at least half never even made it to the back-end of the CPF Rankings list. Of the ones who did get a handful of points here or there, I believe only Kranepool, Wright, Reyes, and (probably after this season) Heilman reside in the top 100.

And three of those aren't dead yet.

Well there looks to be 9 who are active and in the organization in one form or another:
Wright, Reyes, Heilman, Feliciano, Milledge, Smith, Gomez, Pelfrey, Humber & Anderson Hernandez

Of the long-timers, Kranepool obviously, and the much-maligned Ron Hodges get the longevity awards.

Plus Jeff Innis, currently residing at #77 while trying to hold back the oncoming Pedro, Carlos, Aaron & Billy

It'll take more than four guys to knock him out of the top 100.
