I'm bored. Figure out the connection between this group of Mets then post your own.

Who are we?

Nymr83

they're all white guys?

Edgy DC
Oct 23 2007 01:49 PM

They all appeared in MTV's Rock 'n' Jock Softball Classic?

Centerfield
Oct 23 2007 01:50 PM

Nope, and I don't know if that's true but that's not what I was going for.

Benjamin Grimm
Oct 23 2007 02:11 PM

Let's see...

I know that Keith and Roger played themselves on Seinfeld and John Stearns played himself, briefly, on Eight is Enough.

Did Pete Harnisch ever appear as himself on a prime-time network show? If so, then there's the connection.

Centerfield
Oct 23 2007 02:23 PM

Nope.

(again, it might be true, but not what I was going for.)

Vic Sage
Oct 23 2007 03:00 PM

they are all Mets whose pictures appear in your initial post.

Centerfield

The answer is there for you to see.

It's not like I'm asking you to name umpires or something.

Oct 23 2007 03:22 PM

It has something to do with The Who.

Entwistle, Moon, Daltrey.

Valadius
Oct 23 2007 03:24 PM

Oh wait, it's their first names. They're the same as the Who members.

Centerfield
Oct 23 2007 03:28 PM

Valadius is wise. Give us your group.

Benjamin Grimm
Oct 23 2007 03:29 PM

Eek. If you gave me a thousand years, I wouldn't have come up with that. I can name one Who: Roger Daltrey. (I guess two, if you count Cindy Lou Who.)

Valadius
Oct 23 2007 04:06 PM

Roger "Daltrey" McDowell
Pete "Townshend" Harnisch
Keith "Moon" Hernandez
John "Entwistle" Stearns

Let me find a suitable group of Mets for the next challenge.

Just kidding. All Star MVPs. In consecutive years maybe. Correct?

Valadius
Oct 24 2007 01:29 PM

Edgy is correct with the second guess. They were all All-Star MVPs, in consecutive years.

1995 - Conine
1996 - Piazza
1997 - S. Alomar
1998 - R. Alomar
1999 - Martinez

Oct 24 2007 01:41 PM

Wow. Very good.

Have the Mets ever had an All-Star MVP?

I'm thinking maybe Matlack in 1972.

And it could very well have been Mazzilli in 1979.

G-Fafif
Oct 24 2007 01:56 PM

Matlack and Madlock were co-MVPs in '75. Later, NBC merged them into Matlock, Tuesday nights at 8 on Channel 4.

Edgy DC
Oct 24 2007 02:07 PM

"Post me, Edgy!"

"Me, too!"

"Don't forget me, Son."

"I see what you're doing. Count my ass in."

"What the...? Oh, OK. Yeah, me. I guess... as long as you're cool with the abscay thing."

"I'll join youse if you'll just... get... this... prick... off of me."

Original Met, anybody?

"Me? No fucking way. Sure, whatever."

"Wha? (Snicker.)"

"Getting kind of cramped in here, isn't it Edgy."

"Look at Mr. My-Photo-Is-So-Big. He never liked bong smoking when I played with him either. Not that I would know."
M

"Me again? Edgy must love me. I was in his last club and even I don't remember being a Met."

"Just keep the porn away from me, hippy."

"This team needs a '69er. Oh, and I don't mean that porn-wise, so be cool, Byrdman."

"I'm confused."

"All I know is that it ain't a club without a Smith. Help me out. Am I still alive?"

G-Fafif
Oct 24 2007 02:19 PM

With a little generous interpretation, are they first and last (and middle) names that can all serve as first names?

Edgy DC
Oct 24 2007 02:22 PM

"You'd name a child 'Brown'? What kind of monster are you?"

G-Fafif
Oct 24 2007 03:52 PM

One of Hank Webb's middle names is Gaylon.

Springsteen wrote a song called Bobby Jean.

Howard Johnson, Rick Reed and Kevin Brown have more or maybe comparatively famous doppelgangers, namewise.

Coleman is the name of a popular cooler. And the butler from "Trading Places".

Kevin Collins was traded for a World Series MVP.

Chris Chambliss didn't do much as a hitting coach.

And I don't recognize the guy in the Rice uniform.

The thread that connects them does not make itself apparent to me.

Nymr83
Oct 24 2007 03:56 PM

i dont know the guy in the Rice uniform or the guy taking a bong hit.

G-Fafif
Oct 24 2007 04:02 PM

Grant Roberts (bong hit guy) had 1 start in 2000.

Rick Reed started the 1 game the Mets won in the 2000 World Series.

Manny Alexander made 1 huge mistake in whom he attempted to follow as an Oriole.

Roger Craig taught Mike Scott 1 valuable thing to do with sandpaper.

Gary Bennett played 1 game as a Met.

Vince Coleman was Public Enemy No. 1.

Dale Murray maybe had 1 good outing.

Kevin Collins was traded for 1 World Series MVP.

I am groping for 1 thing they all had in common...

G-Fafif
Oct 24 2007 04:04 PM

The Rice guy is Wayne Graham, 1 realizes...

G-Fafif
Oct 24 2007 04:10 PM

Ken Sanders was hit by a throw back from the catcher.

Vince Coleman was eaten by a tarp roller.

Howard Johnson was accused of corking his bat.

Rick Reed was needlessly ostracized as a replacement player.

Manny Alexander was needlessly ostracized for replacing Ripken.

I liked to refer to Dale Murray as The Master of Disaster in his non-prime.

Kevin Collins could have been given a newer jersey for his 1969 Topps card.

Grant Roberts trusted the wrong people.

I'm still waiting for Hank Webb to break through. And his middle name still involves Gaylon.

Valadius
Oct 24 2007 04:39 PM

I actually know somebody named Brown. And he's insane.

"Check out the dangerous slashing font on my numbers." (It made sense with the old photo.)

lets try to do 1 at a time hahn, this could get chaotic otherwise

Agreed. I'll save that for later.

Not the answer I'm looking for. As I said, the best clue probably can be found in the Reyes photo.

SteveJRogers

Since Carter and Mex are NOT stolen base artists, I'm going with led the Mets in Total Bases?

Nymr83
Nov 07 2007 03:55 PM

they all got dirty alot?
they all foolishly slide hands-first?

Benjamin Grimm
Nov 07 2007 06:22 PM

Don Hahn never led the club in any offensive categories.

SteveJRogers
Nov 07 2007 06:56 PM

I'd also say they played every inning of a World Series, but that leaves out Reyes.

The only way Carter and Mex could steal a postseason base would be on a double steal...

Benjamin Grimm
Nov 07 2007 07:33 PM

I suspect it has something to do with triples.

They all hit postseason triples for the Mets?

For those of you who are browser-impaired, the pictures above are of Lou Thornton, Gary Gentry, Kevin McReyonlds, Rich Chiles, John Stearns, John Milner, Ron Darling, Dick Schofield, Dennis Musgraves, Kevin Tapani, Mike Torrez, Darryl Hamilton, Chico Walker, Dave Gallagher, Bill Almon, Terry Blocker, Ken Boswell, and George Theodore. They're alphabetized not by name, but by the thing that qualifies them for this list.

Not pictured, but could have been:
Marlon Anderson, Terrence Long, Craig Brazell, Sammy Drake, Larry Bowa, Leon Brown, Danny Boitano, Doug Henry, Fernando Vina, Ron Herbel, Greg Harts, Rick Waits, Tony Phillips, Moises Alou, Sid Fernandez, Gary Thurman, Tim Bogar, Larry Miller, Mike DeJean, Kenny Greer, Chad Bradford, Dan Wheeler, Jerry Martin, Pete Schourek.

The not pictured list is also in alphabetical order.

Good luck! I think this is probably unreasonably difficult, but knowing this group, somebody will probably get it within five minutes.

when you get the previous one right its your turn. i've had one sitting around for days because i'm never going to answer one correctly. sadly i would have gotten yancy's if i'd seen it first since it is easily determined from the limited biographical data on baseball reference and thats my first stop

I think what you're going for is "throw lefty/bat righty" guys, though wasn't Testes a switch hitter?

Nymr83
Nov 08 2007 08:33 PM
Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Nov 08 2007 08:36 PM

yeah, i was confused by UMDB which has the following incorrect data:
]Aaron Shawn Estes
Born: February 18, 1973 at San Francisco, Cal.
Throws: Right Bats: Left
Height: 6.02 Weight: 195

i saw "right left" and since i knew he threw lefty i assumed he batted righty without looking too closely to see that they had both wrong (i assumed they were just reversed)

baseball reference lists him as a switch hitter but then when i click "splits" it shows 582 plate appearences as a righty (440 vs. righties and 142 vs. lefties) which is his correct total.

so i'm not sure what to think.

Well, the Aussie uniform pic was sustained in some places, not in others. So now you know you have a (can't believe I'm hand-holding) guy who has played for both St. Lucie and the Aussie national team.

But forget that. Focus on row two.

Fixed, and yupper! All former Mets who went on to be regular broadcasters for the team. All on the TV side interestingly enough, Shamsky was one of the original Sports Channel voices and Buddy did a year in the SC booth in the early 80s. Of course we had Staub's run in the SC booth, Seaver's long run in WPIX/WB booth, and finally Gary Cohen's two booth mates in Keith and Ron.

Milwaukee Brewers

Benjamin Grimm
Nov 26 2007 09:00 AM

He's also missing a few Senators, a Padre, a Royal, and maybe a few others.

I figure he's either intentionally omitting Scorpios or something, or he accidentally overlooked a few players.

SteveJRogers
Nov 26 2007 09:44 AM

Yup, and again I swear Ben is really Reed Richards!

Since the Brewers, Rangers and Nationals tend to be considered seperate than teams that just relocate but keep the name (Braves, Dodgers, Giants) I included them in the list.

Edgy DC
Nov 26 2007 10:20 AM

If you've got 15 minutes some day, write the Nationals and ask them to change their policy and honor the retired numbers from the Expos.
