Soccer and Superheroes at Shea

While listening to FAN this morning, Joe Benigno and Evan Roberts openly called for the Jets to play one final home game at Shea next year before the stadium is demolished. Clearly that won't happen, but it did get me doing a little research on other Shea events and noticed a couple things from Wikipedia:

New York United of the American Soccer League called Shea home in 1980. Recently , the Colombia national football team played a number of exhibition games at Shea.
and

In 1987 Marvel Comics rented Shea Stadium to re-enact the wedding of their two characters Spider-Man/Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson.

Questions:
What was the soccer configuration? Was it the same setup as football? How about the Colombia national team games? Were they set up the same way? Any photos anywhere?
Are there any pictures/stories regarding the Marvel event?

There are great photos out there if you look.

Video also.

Thanks, Edgy!

A creepy looking Stan Lee, a superhero wedding, Spencer Christian, and John Tesh all in one vid clip? I'm not worthy.

I like the idea but I don't think that Shea's old football configuration is possible anymore.

The field level seats were made to remain permanently stationed (as opposed to being movable to create the gridiron rectangle) some years back and the creation of more seats behind homplate and left field bleachers would probably further hinder that set-up.

I suppose if the place we're going to be demolished anyway they could just take sledgehammers and carve out a field where they'd need it, but that ain't likely.

And be careful what you wish for as welI - I remember going to Jets games at Shea with my dad. That place can get fucking cold in the winter.

Yeah, they'd have to do it after baseball season ended to be able to move the field level seats, but as you say, with the construction of CitiField, it would be difficult to add those bleachers out behind the outfield walls.

Maybe a bunch of old Jets could play a flag football game there for charity, something the Broncos did with Mile High Stadium. That would be a better send-off for Shea than Billy Joel.

Team Walt against Team Weeb.

The list is long of what would be a better sendoff, but I've already argued that one out.

I was watching some sporting event recently (probably a Penn State game) and there was a trivia question posted on the screen that asked who Joe Paterno's college basketball coach at Brown was.

The answer: Weeb.

That's a good one.

And here's Weeb with a guy who looks a lot like Chris Mullin.

Yep, that's what you were watching.
