Adam Ant was as byronic a force as there could have been in the early eighties. A freak to the boys, he made the girlies cry and the parents tut, and if that's not a formula for success, I don't know what. But a couple of career mis-steps, including transitionin to a solo career just as Adam and the Ants were gaining US currency, and the leading byronic British import of the time came not from the avante-garde, but from the far more predictable act that was London leatherboy Billy Idol.

On Live Aid day, time constraints cut his set to one song, and he chose his new single "Vive le Rock!," attempting to signal to the world that he was in full-on rock-out mode. Too late, as both the album and single were embarrassingly released with mis-spellings (mis-spellings!!), another in a long line of career boners.

He threw music overboard to pursue acting (acting!!), and, by the time he came back, he had lost his market position. The last I heard from him was a tasteful pop-soul piece called "Woderful" that seemed more like something from a Rick Astley or George Michael record. It was nonetheless a minor hit on the adult contemporary tip. Even if you intend to vote without viewing the clips, I recommend viewing this one just to see how jarringly out-of-charater it is. If you don't, I'm sure you'll hear it at the end of some British romantic comedy your woman rents someday soon.

It strikes me that his sound and exoticism was comparable to Duran Duran's to the American sensibility, and maybe things would have been different had he done a Bond theme. That's at the ticket.

Despite the title of this thread referencing Adam and the Ants' "Antmusic," I'm including only tracks from his solo career, listed chrnonologically.

Original Ant Marco Pirroni remains his guitar player to this day, I think. Pirroni also toured with Sinead O'Connor during her heyday, and I think he must be the sideman of choice for bipolar enigmatic stars bent on committing career suicide.

2) "Desperate But Not Serious"

3) "Strip"

4) "Vive le Rock"

Fruity bonus footage, because you've been such a great group:

What a buncha crap!

I liked the "tribal" sound of Adam & the Ants, with the drumsticks cracking the rims and the chanting and stuff. "Dog Eat Dog" -- now that was cutting edge as far as my 15-year-old ass was concerned.

Like Kiss, AA became more of an ass once the makeup & theatrics came off.

I want my Wild Frontier back.

Agreed, thus my questioning who was at the wheel of his career. Yet, this is what is available for your mix tape.

Had a friend growing up that was a huge fan of Adam Ant, only person in the village IIRC, had his jacket all dressed up with Ants badges and the like, very gay.

I voted Goody Two Shoes because my highschool marching band played it.

Oh, get over yerselves.

ELO is suddenly cool but AA is untouchable? "Vive le Rock!" is painted right off of their palette.

I knew there was something missing, or at least the song I remember .

Sorry, stuck only to the solo catalog.

Would it be ok if I put a poll up?

That 'unplug the jukebox' song was catchy, but I guess it doesn't make
the cut. There are small eras of rock video best forgotten, a few of these
are classic examples of why.

Do it .... NOW!!!!

BTW, Metirish, I forgot to tell you this, but I discovered recently that my father-in-law is a big Thin Lizzy fan from way back. Last time we visited we watched an entire DVD of Thin Lizzy videos. You had to be there.

Very cool, next time you go ask him if he has " live & dangerous" on video, classic.

You're talking about "Antmusic," also from the Adam and the Ants catalog, therefore ineligible. I'd put up a second poll including the band's work, but I'd guess you'd then have to kill me, judging from the room's recoiling from Adam's sexsational strut.

I know what song I meant and by whom, I'm a buster of balls.

Buy the autoibo now, shown with the swanky adult contemp Adam on the British cover at left and the sticky Byronic Adam at right on the American cover.

Three reviews. All five-stars. Eat it.

Unless it's full of regret for dumping the two-drummer setup that produced this then I don't know what.
