Which one is you?

Rudyard Kipling.

Actually, I only sold the story. It won't be on the site until next October.

Do you like Kipling?

I don't know. How do you kipple?

Chuck - you'll give us the heads up when it's there?

Of course.

Thanks everyone. I'm particular happy with this one, since I wrote the story 12 years ago, and have had it rejected by 15 editors at 14 markets (twice at Fantasy & Science Fiction). It's great that it will finally be publishd after all that postage.

I found out that they work fast; the first half of the story is online already: http://www.baens-universe.com/articles/ ... ti_Pleezmi

Baen evidently puts up stories immediately and you can read them with a premium subscription. Otherwise, you wait until they're officially published (mine will be in October 2008) and read them with a regular subscription.

I also met Eric Flint, the coeditor, at World Fantasy Con last weekend. Turned out he hadn't wanted to buy the story -- he had an issue with the setup -- but his coeditor, Mike Resnick, thought that was trivial and wanted it. They decided to let their managing editor break the tie, and she liked it.

One thing I've learned is that there are all sorts of near misses and good and bad luck when you're submitting stories.

Sold another story, Regular Guy, this time to the On the Brighter Sidewebzine (not much to see there yet).

The story has a long history. I wrote it in 1993 and sold it to an anthology of superhero stories put together by Kurt Busiek and Nathan Archer. The book had some big names in it, including one of the few fiction works by the legendary Jack Kirby.

But the deal fell through. The publisher wanted to include some reprints, so Busiek pulled it and tried shopping it around. No one bit (there had been an anthology of original superhero stories just out). But the original publisher didn't ask for their advance back, so I got paid for it even though it never was published.

So now I get paid for it again. It should show up in October.

The Baen's Universe story I mentioned previously is now officially published.

Here's the "cover":

The story is here.

congrats!
That's a great-looking cover.
I've never read that mag, but i'll pick it up.
I submitted my story to them but i never even got the courtesy of a rejection.

Hard to pick up a copy -- it's all online.

I'm surprised you didn't hear from them, though. They take submissions online, too, and keep you informed about its progress. You get a link to track the status.

Most likely, there was a typo in your e-mail address and the notification never reached you.
