Adopted: Dylan Owen

I like a guy with two last names. Plus how can you think of "Owen" and not recall the great Anne Ramsey in "Throw Momma from the Train"?

Baseball America today issued their 2007 National League Draft Report Card (subscriber only), with evaluations of each team’s crop from June’s Amateur Player Draft. Among other categories, they rank: best pro debut, athlete, hitter, fastball and as well as closest to the major leagues.

BA gives specific attention to Dylan Owen, a 21-year old right hander drafted in the 20th round out of Francis Marion University; he was 9-1 with a 1.49 ERA in 14 games (13 starts) for the Brooklyn Cyclones, walking 12 and fanning 69 in 72.1 innings.

The New York Future Stars web site lists Owen as one of their "5 Mets Prospects Under the Radar to Watch."

#2) Dylan Owen: Another selection from this past year's draft, Dylan Owen was the Division II pitcher of the year, as well as the Ace of the Brooklyn Cyclones' staff this year. His numbers at Low-A were excellent: 9-1, 1.49; 51 hits, 12 walks, and 69 K's in 72.1 IP [this after pitching 102 IP prior to the draft]. Of course, pitcher-friendly Brooklyn is a long ways away from Shea, but Owen has a deep repertoire of pitches which figure to improve as he contines his ascension in the system. His fastball is generally low 90's [although one chatter at BA said it was high-80s], and his slider is his most advanced pitch with good break and control. Additionally, Baseball America lists Owen as having the best control of any pitcher on the farm. He needs several years in the minors according to Scout.com, to gain better command of his fastball, and to dial his changeup back as he throws it too fast to successfully disrupt timing. But, Owen's promising debut and arsenal puts his ceiling as a better-than-average major leaguer starter, in the low 2/high 3 spectrum of a rotation.

It seems that the Mets have done well in the Minaya era finding college pitchers from obscure programs.

More from BA:

-- Owen dominated hitters during his college career at Francis Marion (S.C.), earning NCAA Division II 2007 pitcher-of-the-year honors after going 10-1, 1.04 and setting the Peach Belt Conference career strikeout record with 334 in three seasons. His success carried over into his pro debut, as he took advantage of short-season Brooklyn's pitcher-friendly Keyspan Park like few pitchers have. Signed for $50,000 in the 20th round, Owen claimed two-thirds of the New York-Penn League's pitching triple crown, leading in wins (nine) and ERA (1.49). He has a shorter and wider body than scouts would like but also solid-average stuff and an advanced feel pitching. He spots his 86-90 mph fastball to all four quadrants of the strike zone, and while he has below-average velocity, he can get to 91-92 when needed, even late in games. He has above-average fastball command, and he can vary his breaking balls depending on the situation, using shorter sliders for groundballs and bigger curves for strikeouts. Owen doesn't have much projection or a true plus pitch, so he's unlikely to become an elite prospect. But he's likely to get pushed aggressively to see if he can get advanced hitters out, and he could jump to high Class A in 2008.

My boy is mowing em down for the high A St. Lucie Mets. Started yesterday, threw six shutout innings. He allowed five hits, walked none, and struck out six. He's now 1-1 with a 1.64 ERA.

Francis Marion University is in Florence, S.C.
Up to now, the most famous thing from that area (Georgetown, S.C.) was the rice museum. Yes, they actually have a museum dedicated to showing visitors everything they ever wanted to know, and more, about rice.

I hope this kid becomes the most famous thing from there in the future.
Good luck with your adoptee.

Owen got a no-decision yesterday but had a good outing... 6 innings, 6 hits, one walk, two runs (one earned), 1 K. Now 2-3 but with a nice little 3.14 ERA.

Owen has 3 of St. Lucie's 13 wins (they are a putrid 13-45). Still, his peripheral numbers are only so-so here in high-A.

Funny that I picked Owen, too. He has the same birthday as my daughter (22 years apart, that is).

I had missed this, but my boy is on his way up. Called up to AA and making his first start for the B-Mets, D-O gets a win and puts up a nice line.

My boy is starting '09 where he finished '08, about 75 miles or so south of where I currently reside.

He did not appear in the major league camp this year and I did not hear much buzz about him. This is a pivotal season for him.

Yeah, he's fallen below Dillon Gee on the rankings of New Dylans.

You should interview him.

Not a good start for D.O. in AA as his ERA stands at 7.24.

Knocked around in AA ball for a couple of months and you get what my boy got -- a demotion back to PSL. Pitching for the moment as a long man on that squad.

After going 1-1 with a 1.50 ERA in A ball (Florida State League), Owen is back in AA and had a good start yesterday, a no decision but went 7 2/3 IPs, 4 H, 1 BB, 7 K, 0 R.

Still winless in 11 AA starts this year. This last one though brought his AA ERA down to 6 for the season.

Re: Adopted: Dylan Owen

I saw your boy down in Trenton tonight at a very mini-CPF gathering (metfairy, D-Dad, MK, and me). He had the sad, forlorn look of someone whose adopted father hadn't given him a thought in close to a year. This didn't stop him from striking out eight of the MFY's AA finest in six innings. He gave up a solid triple, but no other hits and no walks. Not much even left thie infield. An amazing performance, though the B-Mets bully blew the game in the seventh.

Yes - Dylan was pretty impressive last night.

We couldn't figure out why they took him out after six efficient innings, though (only to see the bullpen blow the game in the 7th). He was dominant while he was in the game.

Ha! I never should've had that baby, I should've dumped him in the dumpster after the prom and gone to dance to Bon Jovi's "Never Say Goodbye" with my boyfriend, while little Dylan cried and ate garbage.

I think such "humor" has crossed the line of good taste and is far from funny in my view. I'm glad to see i wasn't the only one to find such a post in poor taste.

Re: Adopted: Dylan Owen

My boy, still brushing the dumpster dirt and coffee grinds off, twirls a no-no in the Puerto Rican league.

Does he get a major league camp invite this February? Not like the 4-5 starter slots are locked down after Niese, Dickey and Pelfrey...

PS My earlier joke is still amusing to me... anyone who knows me knows that I am a loving and caring parent. Clearly an adult like Mr. Owen would be able to crawl out of the dumpster. See, that's the joke.
