In pre-Glasnost East Germany, a secret policeman is assigned to spy and tattle on a writer who may or may not be disloyal, and hijinx (the kind that make you consider the values of, and relationships between, art, freedom, government, privacy, politics and sex with actresses, that is) ensue.

No foolin here, I liked it. I think it was up for some Oscars. Guten stuff.

The idiotic poll choices have nothing to do with this movie.

It won the foreign-film Oscar, beating out "Pan's Labyrinth." Haven't seen it yet. Went to the vidstore to get it this weekend, it was checkered out.

Saw it this weekend. Loved it. The performance by the Stasi guy was terrific as he gets sucked into the life of the writer.
