He wasn't high strung, unless by high strung, you mean "objected vociferously to interference by meddling bosses." Which doesn't mean this won't be fun.

imo Girardi was the best choice (he has good experience and i dont think he's stuck in the " 'old school' i don't know what a statistic is" mentality.) he also is the potentially more fun choice for non-yankee fans because unlike mattingly i dont think he's going to be the yankee yes-man, maybe he can even have some media wars with players and stuff :)

I saw a photo of Joe Girardi in the paper today, and I swear, at first glance I thought it was a computer-hybrid mixing the faces of Barak Obama and Wesley Clark. I thought it was an illustration for some goofy article suggesting they'd make a Dream Team as running mates in 2008.

Girardi didn't like getting shown up in front of the team any more than Loria did, tempers flared in 90-minute screaming match. This was early August. Reportedly, the Florida clubhouse staff was setting up for hastily called press conference --- presumably to announce Girardi's dismissal or resignation --- but it was called off as cooler heads prevailed. Nonetheless, Girardi was a dead man walking from that point on.

I finally watched Torre's Monday appearance on Letterman. His best line was about how, after the "divorce," he and the Yankees have to decide who gets custody of Billy Crystal. (I'd say that whoever the winner is is actually the loser.)
