Offseason Trade Shoppe

Atlanta has wasted no time, kicking off the winter's action by dealing shortstop Edgar Renteria to Detroit for a pair of outstanding names: Jair Jurrjens and Gorkys Hernandez. They're both young pitchers (edit- blah blah Gorkys is actually an outfielder), but who cares? Jair and Gorkys. Gorkys and Jair.

Wow! Can't say that Schurholz (or now successor) have ever been afraid to make the big trade. I saw that Jurrjens guy briefly this year and he's got real good stuff. He's also one of Andruw's homeboys (from the Dutch West Indies island of Curacao) so it's obvious the Braves have some kind of quota going on here. Since they'll probably lose Andruw they were forced by the quota system to snag Jurrjens. As I recall the Braves have a good SS in their system who they probably think is just about ready - and knowing how things usually go he'll come up and out-play Renteria from opening day onward.

I'd assume you mean Yunel Escobar, who was certainly impressive this year for the Braves while Renteria was hurt. Seems like a mutually beneficial deal. Detroit needed a shortstop, Carlos Guillen legs just can't do the job anymore.

Actually I was thinking about Elvis Andrus (they're cornering the market on best first names) but he's probably not ready yet and Escobar was impressive last season while Renteria was shelved. Good deal for Detroit. I guess Guillen becomes more or less a full-time 1B next year. Wither Sean Casey?

For a good player Renteria has been on a lot of teams: Marlins - Cards - Red Sox - Braves - Tigers.

Hernandez just spent the summer here in Grand Rapids playing for the West Michigan Whitecaps -- in the low-A Midwest League. He could hit a little.

Elvis Andrus is in the Rangers organization now, thanks to the Teixeira deal. Brent Lillibridge might get a chance to make the roster out of Spring Training, though.

that guy gorkys, his name reminded me of that "down to gorky park" line from the song "winds of change". so now i am involved in a flullblown youtube scorpions festival. i am being rocked like a hurricane. for me the offseason is shaping up pretty good so far.

That's right, I forgot Andrus was dealt away. Lillibridge - who came over from Pittsburgh in the Gonzalez/LaRoche deal - has been getting some good ink too.
