... but Easley, Green, Marlon Anderson, Castillo, plus the two catchers all filed for free agency on the first day of the filing period.

I'll bet on Castro, Castillo, and Anderson returning.

I think that sounds right.

smg58 - "I'll bet on Castro, Castillo, and Anderson returning."

I'm okay with that. I wouldn't mind having Easley back as a righthanded bat off the bench and general utility man.

I agree on both counts.

Mets pick up Alou's option, re-sign Easley

BY DAVID LENNON | david.lennon@newsday.com
4:09 PM EDT, October 31, 2007

The Mets announced today that they have picked up the $7.5-million option on Moises Alou and also re-signed Damion Easley, whose season was cut short on Aug. 18 because of a severe ankle sprain.

Alou, 41, played only 87 games last year because of a left quadriceps strain that cost him roughly 10 weeks on the disabled list. But when Alou was in the lineup, he was productive, batting .341 with 13 home runs and 49 RBI.

Easley, who turns 38 later this month, took over as the starting second baseman after the injury to Jose Valentin and hit .280 with 10 home runs in only 193 at-bats.

Hard to argue with either.

I'm thrilled we have Alou back, and I'll take Easley back, as a utility guy.

You mean he's not going to be the starting second baseman?

You never know...

there isnt much out there, Easley hits lefties very well, could we find him a platoon-mate who hits righties instea of worrying about a fulltime starter that may not exist?

Easley gets a one-year deal for $950,000.

Ruben Gotay may be the other half of that platoon. I believe that Castillo would like to remain with the Mets. If he could be picked up for reasonable rate, that would take care of the secondbase vacancy. If not, then a platoon of Gotay/Easley at second base is not ideal, but it may be sufficient if other holes in the team are addressed. Personally, I am more concerned with filling the catching vacancy and improving the pitching. Both the rotation and the bullpen need improvement and added depth.

I reckon that means they're optomistic about his ankle.
