Smells just like a rose, tastes like a peach

You prolly coulda spent $5.94 and left 'Les Boys' out. Then you could apply that .99 toward the purchase of, say, 'Single-Handed Sailor' from 'Communique.'

I don't how Eric Clapton didn't just off himself the first time he heard this stuff.

Name another great rock album that opens with a song that runs 8:11.

A listenable engaging exciting well-played never-boring song at that.

You can't.

The keyboardist is as crucial to that album's sound as Knopfler is.

Good point about "Les Boys." Is there a rule that every British guitar god has to write a song about the homoeroticism of greasers?

As first songs go, it's hard to beat "Down to the Waterline" from DS' first album -- especially the way it starts. Pick here... pick there... silence. Then ... he makes it cry and sing over that bluesly shuffle. First song, first album. Fuck me.

Alchemy starts with a 10+ minute version of "Once Upon a Time in the West." Though they may have pushed it too far with all 14 minutes of "Telegraph Road," leading off "Love Over Gold."

I loved 'Telegraph Road' and all its lengthy overdone-ness.
There was a point when that album was new-ish where I was making half-hour or so late-night drives on a semi-regular basis and 'TR' on the tapedeck was a staple in filling up a bulk of that ride. Great driving song.

I've mentioned before that Dire Straits was probably the last band where I was telling folks how good they were before they were widely known.
Hell, they may have been the first too -- it's so rare that I'm ahead of the curve.

Does the remastered version sound much better?

I love "Skateaway."

Does anybody care about high-quality sound anymore? They've got libraies of 10,000 songs and they're listening to them on lousy computer speakers with no woofers.

Lousy sond is better than no sound.

I use to bring a transistor AM/FM radio to the beach. It wasn't like listening to my stereo in my room but I still liked it.

You got lemons...

I'm not knocking it. Just commenting that values seem to have changed. Quantity is trumping quality.

I was just asking because I have the older version of the CD, and wanted to know if it was worth the money to upgrade to the remastered version.

The older verson plays low on my iPod.

My computer speakers actually have a woofer!

Saw Dire Straits on the On Every Street tour.
