I have one brother so if he's not selected as my best man, it would be a serious slight. The problem is that everybody who meets my brother says something along the lines of, "I really liked your brother, until he opened his mouth."

Congrats, Edgy!!!!

I was wearing my 1986 jersey when I proposed in what was supposed to be a romantic evening at Burns Park in Massapequa -- and it turned out to be a total disaster, except for the part when she said "Yes!"

Edgy DC
Nov 12 2007 12:54 PM

Can you... describe the disaster?

metsguyinmichigan
Nov 12 2007 01:01 PM

There was an endless series of disasters.

In theory, we were supposed to get some ice cream and then sit by the water enjoying the sunset.

Alas -- and this is the thumbnail version -- got stuck in traffic coming down from Connecticut, Mom not up on the plan insisting strongly that we had plenty of ice cream in the freezer, bleeping Carvel being closed by the time we got there forcing the last minute substitution of Slurpees and then, as I dropped down to my knee with ring in hand, a car full of drunken teenagers schreeches up near the bench where we were sitting, shouting, throwing cans out the window and blasting music.

Like I said, lucky she said yes! Must have been the 1986 Mets jersey.

What would the room say to an Opus 40 wedding?

What would the archbishop say to us getting married with that big pagan monolith as a backdrop?

I thought Catholics could only get married in a church, no?

Edgy DC
Nov 14 2007 08:59 AM

I'm just flying things up the flagpole --- nothing wrong with getting married at a local church and having a reception at the Opus.

Benjamin Grimm

[quote="soupcan":3smkxae0]I thought Catholics could only get married in a church, no?[/quote:3smkxae0]

Is that true? I thought that as long as it was officiated by a priest that it would be kosher.

So to speak.

Nymr83
Nov 14 2007 11:57 AM

i dont know the catholic rules but in judaism the location doesnt matter, in isreal its pretty common to have the chupah outdoors.

oh and congrats edgy

metirish
Nov 14 2007 12:12 PM

From the rule book.

Where will the wedding take place?

To highlight the sacredness of the celebration, and to underscore the relationship between your marriage and the Christian community, the Catholic Church stipulates that Catholic weddings take place in Catholic churches. Permission will not be given for outdoor weddings or unusual locations. Normally, the wedding will be celebrated in the parish where either of the Catholic parties resides. Your pastor may give permission for it to be celebrated in another Catholic church or chapel (for example, a Newman Center). If you are marrying a non-Catholic Christian or a non-baptized person, you may request permission to have the wedding take place elsewhere (e.g., in another Christian church or a synagogue or in another suitable place).

I think Opus 40 would be considered an unusual location .

Benjamin Grimm
Nov 14 2007 02:22 PM

So a priest will officiate at an off-site wedding if one of the two parties is Catholic but not if they both are?

Am I reading that right?

This is a new one on me. I was Catholic for a long time and was unaware of the "it has to be in a church" rule.

Nymr83
Nov 14 2007 03:23 PM

Nov 29 2007 01:52 PM

Congrats! Did you actually propose or did common law just kick in?

I'm pretty sure a Catholic-Catholic wedding has to be held in a church, but there's a dispensation for everything.

Edgy DC
Nov 29 2007 02:14 PM

I actually proposed.

Common law got us a few years back while we weren't looking, but nobody should get passively married.

themetfairy
Nov 29 2007 02:34 PM

Common law only works if you're actually holding yourself out to the world as being married. Merely living together doesn't count.

I'm posting from my parish. She's in there with my priest answering arcane questions about what might invalidate a marriage, such as:

  • Are you being kidnapped?

  • Are you already married?

  • Are you a nun?

  • Is he a nun?

Fun stuff.
