Anyone up for a Song Parody Contest this offseason?

SteveJRogers

I'm game for a 07-08 edition of the CPF Song Parody Contest.

Slow down, not everybody at once.

I know this may have run its course. Maybe this year, though, we could ask our bloggy friends to promote it and maybe bring in some new members.

If it's on, I may or may not participate.

I'm definitely in. Got your back, SJR.

sharpie
Nov 26 2007 06:58 AM

I'll probably do it. Over the course of a year a song occurs to me that reminds me of a Met and I think "I hope I get (so-and-so)." If, however, I am stuck with Mike Torrez as my most compelling player I'm gonna be pissed.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Nov 26 2007 07:10 AM

I shall defend my title with Honor and Dignity and if they're not available, the Dave Clark Five.

Kid Carsey
Nov 26 2007 07:18 AM

I'm in if we proceed at a leisurely pace - and I usually get booted
in the first round anyway most years it seems.

TransMonk
Nov 26 2007 07:25 AM

I'm in.

sharpie
Nov 26 2007 07:44 AM

As to Carsay's leisurely pace comment, I think it might help if we schedule this stuff for particular dates. In other words, Round One happens on such-and-such date, Round Two two weeks or so later, etc. I find that as it goes on the songs generally get worse as people have ample time for the first round but are pressured for subsequent rounds.

seawolf17
Nov 26 2007 08:46 AM

Yeah, sharpie's got a good point. By the time I get to the championship -- which I plan to do this year -- I'm lyrically spent. I thought "Estes' Lament" was Songwriters Hall of Fame-worthy, but the rest of the stuff I did got progressively worse.

Benjamin Grimm
Nov 26 2007 08:55 AM

Well, last year I was an early exit, but the previous year when I did five songs I found that my muse came and went. I was most happy with my second ("I Think It's Don Grant Now") and third ("Pedro is the Guy Dwarves Climb On") efforts, and my fifth ("I've Looked at Maz From Both Sides Now") was pretty good too, but my first ("Mookie") was somewhat weak and I was lucky to win with my fourth song. ("Don't Know Much About Ed Bressoud")

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Nov 26 2007 09:09 AM

I think to win the whole thing you have to arrange your rotation and have a ready ace in the bullpen.

Edgy DC
Nov 26 2007 09:22 AM

I like to blow my ace up front and hope that the muse returns to me when I collect my new names.

Very stressful way to fly, though.

sharpie
Nov 26 2007 09:30 AM

That's how I do it, too. One at a time.

O'course two years ago when I lost to Yancy in the finals and knew I was going with a weak Rusty Staub song I came up with a better idea for a different player a week later.

seawolf17
Nov 26 2007 09:35 AM

I think you have to do it one song at a time; it's one loss and you're out. No reason to save your ace for Game 2 when there's no guarantee that there will be a Game 2.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Nov 26 2007 09:40 AM

Winning names sucks. The whole name thing sucks. Too many people purport to get screwed, and this thing needs a change anyhow.

So if it were me, and not Steve J Rogers, in charge of this shindig, I'd shitcan the whole winning and receiving names thing and instead align rounds to broad categories, like in a game show.

So you seed the contestants and set up the first round matchups, then randomly assign a category for both combatants to tackle. The categories could be people, places or things.

Let's say, Sharpie vs. Gwreck get "the 1970s"

and Lunchbucket vs. Willets Pt get "the 2006 playoffs"

and Edgy-Lundy square off in "Shea Stadium"

and another pair gets "Jose Reyes" etc etc etc.

You just need enough categories to cover the number of anticipated song showdowns.

Benjamin Grimm
Nov 26 2007 09:42 AM

I like it.

Edgy DC
Nov 26 2007 10:25 AM

Iwas already preparing to expand the subject pool to include managers, owners, seasons, stadia, and such.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Nov 26 2007 10:30 AM

Yeah but think of assigning those topics to contests and not to contestants.

Edgy DC
Nov 26 2007 10:32 AM

I hear you.

On one hand, being hit with a single subject choice per round is hard.

On the other hand, the challenge of hardness can breed innovation, and probably will make voting easier, as we're comparing apples to apples.

sharpie
Nov 26 2007 10:48 AM

I do like the idea of both contestents writing about the same topic or player (once again I refer to my matchup with marathon over Eric Hillman which, I think, produced two good songs about one not-good pitcher).

seawolf17
Nov 26 2007 10:53 AM

Definitely like the same-topic battles. Vastly more interesting.

Edgy DC
Nov 26 2007 11:08 AM
Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Nov 26 2007 11:28 AM

OK, looking at people, places, and things, we have...

500 players (among our ranked guys)
+18 Managers
+ 46 Seasons
+ 11 General Managers
+ 7 Post-Seasons
+ 3 Principal Owners
+ 3 Stadia (five or six if you count spring training)
+ 2 Mascots
+ 29 Broadcasters (no, I don't count Francesa and Russo)
+ 11 TV, Cable and Media outlets
+ 4 Retired Numbers

That's 634 subjects, 79% of which are players. Stop me when I've gone too far.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Nov 26 2007 11:16 AM

That's way too big a list. I'd suggest you include only the Top 15 or maybe top 20 players max, with the idea that, if you include the seasons (and not all of them are going to be necessary), most players are available theoretically.

Make the topics broad and give the writers room to interpret and be different from one another.

Edgy DC
Nov 26 2007 11:24 AM

Sorry. Top 15 or 20 players from each season, or top 15 or 20 players ever?

sharpie
Nov 26 2007 11:26 AM

Shouldn't be "top" players. Should be a random assortment of players from very good to very bad or it could be subjects like "left handed closers", "drug users" etc.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Nov 26 2007 11:28 AM

Top 15 or 20 on the whole list. Or maybe, every other guy in the top 40 or soemthing. I was thinking just to have enough topix to cover the anticipated number of matches.

Edgy DC
Nov 26 2007 11:36 AM

Well, I forsee an expanded field with the possibility that the bloggers might invite their readership to join and participate.

But a field of 16 leads to 15 contests. Still, what makes deep fanhood exciting is the brighter color of the ephemera. I like the challenge broad field. The Hillman contest wouldn't have happened without it. And, year after year, how much can we say about John Franco if we don't throw the Buzz Capras in there.

9 positions, ten if you count relievers, eleven if you count dh's.
+ A Coupla Spring Training Homes
+ 2 Sign Men
+ 1 Cowbell Man

(Throw coaches in there, we'll be approaching a database of 800 possible subjects.)

Centerfield
Nov 26 2007 11:40 AM

The number of subjects would obviously have to be determined after the number of players/matchups are determined, but you could start nominating subjects now. I don't think we should have any limitation on subjects, so long as they are interesting.

For instance, 1986, Shea Stadium, Mets Announcers and Tsuyoshi Shinjo are all subjects that seem interesting enough to warrant a matchup to me.

sharpie
Nov 26 2007 11:41 AM

So maybe have 800 subjects. For each matchup the higher ranked contestent (or lower ranked, I don't care) picks a number which in turn provides the subject for the matchup. This way no Lunchbucket-style having a song in waiting but most of us don't do that anyway.

Valadius
Nov 26 2007 11:51 AM

I'm in. And I'm sorry I didn't show up last year.

seawolf17
Nov 26 2007 12:01 PM

I like the random selection of subjects; don't overthink it, just let it fly. It's a much better challenge to write a good song about Rich Becker. ("What rhymes with 'strikeout'?")

Nymr83
Nov 26 2007 01:18 PM

i think i'll give it a shot if we do this topics thing instead of a random list of former-met scrubs for each contestant

Edgy DC
Nov 26 2007 01:21 PM

Well, the broader topic list seems to have consensus, as does both contestants working on the same topic. How big a a topic database and and what to include in it do not.

A possible danger is that if both contestants are working on Gary Carter, they may both turn in a parody called "The Ballad of Gary the Kid," as two past contestants already have.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Nov 26 2007 01:27 PM

Yeah but one would surely be better than the other.

Nymr83
Nov 26 2007 01:46 PM

let everyone just start listing topics. individual players should not be topics, imo, because we do them every year. limit it to 10 topics per person to start so we don't have a mile long list from SJR

I initially enjoyed writing song parodies for the contest, but eventually it lost it's appeal to me. Maybe I've just grown lazy, but when writing the parodies started to feel like a required school assignment and was no longer fun, I knew it was time to quit. I enjoy reading the contributions of others and look forward to a lively contest from those that choose to participate, but I think I will pass.

Kid Carsey
Nov 26 2007 06:09 PM
Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Nov 26 2007 06:39 PM

I don't care either way or what the topics are, but I have to say that part
of the charm (for lack of a better word) for me was that former Mets' scrubs
got a short week of glory and I learned some stuff about long-forgotten Mets
because of the song lyrics or they prompted me to look things up. Also, if I
had a few fringe Mets' guys to pick from I was forced to dig out old yearbooks
and programs and get to know them better. I realize that's not everyone's bag.

I guess the same things can happen depending on how obscure the topics
become. For example, I don't care how well a song about the ball rolling
through Buckner's legs is written -- it would draw a large yawn from me.

I also like the idea of having a more concrete schedule, I work better with
deadlines.

MFS62
Nov 26 2007 06:29 PM

I'd be in if we did it the old way (random picking of players only).
I'm going to have to see more details if it will be done differently.

I'm a definite maybe.

i dont think the topics should get anywhere near as definite as the ball going between buckner's legs, broad topics will allow for more creativity. things like "60's mets" "met relievers" "mets (non-sports) news" "going to shea" or anything else we can come up with.

Edgy DC
Nov 27 2007 06:00 AM

I appreciate peeps' love fore the Eric Hillman showdown, but I defend the "five random subjects" and "winning the purse of the vanquished" policies this contest was born with. It made the costest a game of chance as well as a game of skill, and a game of spoils as well. It gave to the show entertainment value that won't easily be found in the fairness of the new regime.

With one subject tto share, we're simply going to have some duds --- maybe more than a few --- with two warriors going at each other with squirt guns.

soupcan
Nov 27 2007 07:15 AM

While I want to stay on record as objecting to SteveJStalker picking up the song parody gauntlet - I believe that was and is Edgy's decision/responsibility - I shall participate should we go forward.

After a few years I think I finally know the formula for success.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Nov 27 2007 07:15 AM

1. You're going to have duds no matter what.

2. Chance will still exist with the random distribution of topics.

3. If a guy turns the 86 playoffs into a squirt gun than he doesn;t deserve to play anyway.

4., Which is why I suggested limiting the topics a la a game show "big board"

5. This could allow for the higher seed to choose a topic for both guys to go at, if you wanted to introduce that kinda randomness and complication.

6. I always thouight the best thing about winning a contest was the prestige, not the topics I got. By the end the list was unweildy anyway.

7. It's like a dozen to 1 (or 2 if all the annual cries for attention are recognized) so let's just do it baby.

Edgy DC
Nov 27 2007 07:34 AM

Can't have the top seed pick. He or she will just pick a topic he's already done.

(on edit): If metfairy wants to play in against seo I guess there's nothing wrong with that. New identity, new rankings.

Instructions will be posted/included, yes? As a newcomer (and spiritual equivalent to North Carolina A&T) to this, I'm still a little dim on process.

I fear Seo, but I don't think I should get a bye round under the circumstances.

Nah, brackets are already set, and metfairy's getting a play-in.

I'm on a plane tomorrow -- I'll type out all the rules and get the list of topics together and ready to be randomized, and post tomorrow night from Syracuse.

I knew I was forgetting something. Where's the updated Top 500 list? Kase, can you e-mail it to me? I'll put brackets up once I get the list randomized, including all the extra things we wanted to add.

I ain't be gottin' no list. Mr. Knot does the list, I just post an Adobeefied one
for easy printing, etc. I don't think we finished anyways, and on quick look I
can't find the thread. I hope it didn't fall off the side or something.
