2007 Annual Charity Gift Exchange

A Boy Named Seo
Nov 22 2007 08:25 PM

Damn, the time flies.

As a lot of you know, we've done a charity gift exchange here at the CPF for a good amount of years now, and it works like this:

Participants sign up by replying with a post in this thread letting us know they're in, and including the name of a charity they admire, volunteer for, or just think could use a few extra bucks. Once all of the participants and their charities are in, I'll conduct a random drawing, and then each of us will give a small donation of a predetermined amount to the charity your name drew. Simple. In years past we've done amounts right in the neighborhood of $20 US dollars.

It's a good thing all around and if you're new to it, we'd love to have you.

For those who want to participate, but don't know who to contribute do, participants in previous years have used the Charity Navigator to scout out worthy recipients of your dough.

If you're in, say so, give us a charity, and confirm that the money amount is cool.

You guys all kick ass and I'm very glad to know you.

Happy Thanksgiving.

JG

My grandmother just died of kidney failure, so put me down for The American Kidney Fund. (http://www.akfinc.org/)

Also, for whatever charity I draw from this pool, I promise to donate at least $50 if the charity has a four-star rating on this site:
http://www.charitynavigator.org/

Otherwise I'll go with the set amount of $20.

Its a charity arm of the company that I work for. Well not so much arm as just a foundation that one of the partners created. They do accept private donations, but its not a seperate organization or entity in the true nature of the term "organization" and "entity"

It's like Costanza's "Human Fund".

I'm in: Heifer International.

Profiled in Bill Clinton's latest book,[u:b95c61df17] Giving[/u:b95c61df17], Heifer International aims to end world hunger and poverty by promoting self-reliance and sustainability. One method they use is to provide likestock to impoverished farmers on the condition that all offspring of that animal be simialrly distributed to other members of the community. Then they'll support two friends, who will support two friends...you get the picture.

Every year I run in the Susan G. Komen Foundation's Race for a Cure, which raises money for breast cancer research. Excellent point.

It IS listed on Charity Navigator, though, and gets four stars:

EFF Mission wrote:
Founded in 1990, the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is the first line of defense when our freedoms in the networked world come under attack. EFF confronts cutting-edge issues defending free speech, privacy, innovation, and consumer rights today. EFF fights for freedom primarily in the courts, bringing and defending lawsuits even when that means taking on the US government or large corporations. By mobilizing more than 50,000 concerned citizens through our Action Center, EFF beats back bad legislation. In addition to advising policymakers, EFF educates the press and public, and supports the development of freedom-enhancing inventions.

It's listed in the category "Public Benefit : Advocacy and Civil Rights"

Dear metirish,

Thank you for your tribute gift to the American Kidney Fund. A tribute card will be mailed out within 3 business days to any individual(s) you have identified.

The American Kidney Fund is the #1 national kidney organization providing direct financial aid to kidney patients in need. Ninety-five cents of every dollar we spend goes directly to programs and services for kidney patients. n 2006, we distributed $81.9 million in grants to more than 63,500 kidney patients in the United States and its territories. AKF has been named a Gold Star Charity by Forbes Magazine, one of America's Best Charities by Reader's Digest, and has received a rating of A Plus from the American Institute of Philanthropy. In September 2005, AKF earned its fifth consecutive 4-Star 'Exceptional' Rating from Charity Navigator.

Your generous support means the most to the kidney patients who rely on the American Kidney Fund for assistance with transportation to dialysis, medications, special diet, kidney donor expenses and other treatment essentials.

Please continue to visit us at www.kidneyfund.org to see how your contribution is making a difference in the lives of kidney patients.

Together with you the American Kidney Fund is reaching out, giving hope, and improving lives.

As promised, since I drew a four-star Charity Navigator charity, I upped my donation to $50.

]Dear Komen Supporter,

I would like to thank you for your contribution of $50.00 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure. Your support helps Komen the Cure fulfill our promise to save lives and end breast cancer by empowering people, ensuring quality care for all and energizing science to find the cures.

Since its inception in 1982, Susan G. Komen for the Cure has made great strides in the fight against breast cancer, funding groundbreaking breast cancer research, much of which has led to landmark discoveries in the quest to find a cure for and eventually prevent breast cancer. In addition to funding research, Komen works to increase breast cancer awareness and promote early detection through events like the Komen Race for the Cure Series. Proceeds from such events help fund community-based breast health education and breast cancer screening and treatment projects for the medically underserved.

Again, thank you for your assistance and your confidence in our efforts. The success of Susan G. Komen for the Cure is made possible through the very generous contributions of corporations, organizations and individuals like yourself. Because of you, we are one step closer to finding a cure.

Once again, thank you for your support.

Mets Guy, the Michigan chapter that you linked to was no longer accepting donations! (Their donations page had expired.) So I made my contribution to the national headquarters. Hope you don't mind.

FANTASTIC!!! And very generous.

My sister-in-law is battling the disease -- successfully, knock on wood -- and it is always so moving to participate in the race and see both the survivors and the people who have lost loved ones.

Once again, the CPF blows me away. Great work, guys.

Serious about the livestock talk. $20 at Heifer.org can buy either a flock of chicks, duck, geese, a share (?) of a llama, or a share of some rabbits.

I wussed out and went general donation. Not everyone's into foie grois.
