A New Arrival.

My wife gave birth last night at 10:46PM to a boy, he came a week early, must have been all this hot stove talk that got him excited.

Lorcan weighed in at 5lbs and 14 oz and looks great, we have known since my wife was 4 and a half months pregnant that Lorcan would be born with a congenital heart defect, TOF ( tetralogy of flow ), even so we had prepared well and could not be happier with his birth, there were no surprises when the cardiologist did tests in the hour after birth which is great news, his heart is able to give enough oxygen to his body and he is breathing on his own , the defect is complex but we have been very well prepared by our Doctors at Ny Presbyterian Hospital Children Hospital.

So right now it's the best case, he'll stay there for a week and come home and around 4 to 6 months have open heart surgery to fix the defects.

As things go his defect while complex could have been more severe, there are numerous other congenital heart defects that they rate as worse.

Here is the probelm.

http://www.healthsystem.virginia.edu/uv ... iac/tf.cfm

I'll have pictures later, I've not even spent 10 minutes with him as he was whisked away after birth.

Congratulations, and best wishes for Lorcan's continued health. My cousin's son had a lot of heart problems -- among other things -- and the doctors at NY Presbyterian did phenomenal, phenomenal things, including a couple of heart surgeries, over the first two years of his life. He's now six, and a normal, healthy boy. They're truly miracle workers there; he's in good hands.

Again, congrats.

Thanks everyone for your thoughts and support , Lorcan is doing fine, we are here with him in the PICU and nothing unusual is going on with him, he is doing everything they expect.

A lot of tubes and wires but that's fine, his color looks way better and his O2 levels are 100% , they were shunting down to the 60's and even the 40's with stress.

In case you are wondering how I am online here, I have the iPod touch and there is open wi- fi throughout the hospital.

Benjamin Grimm
Mar 18 2008 09:27 AM

Is he going to have much of a scar?

Depending on his personality, he may be self-conscious about it, or he may think it's cool.

A very beautiful actress once told David Letterman (after his heart surgery) that she thinks chest scars are sexy. (I don't remember who it was; it may have been Julia Roberts.)

Of course, Julia Roberts will probably be a little too old for Lorcan's tastes.

Mar 18 2008 07:43 PM

Lorcan's incision is a little over two inches long and the surgeon has told us that as he grows it will be harder to see it and in time it will hardly be noticeable.

Several Doctor's have told us that his surgeon is known for his "great hands" and his brilliance at suturing , my research online supports that. It was surprising to see how little the incision is after they took the main bandage away.

We plan on telling him what he went through so i hope that helps him, pictures up soon.

Dec 05 2008 03:10 PM

We took Lorcan today to see a pediatric orthopedic doctor because over the past month or more we have noticed a bump along his spine when we would bath him or when he would move his back certain ways. Well today we got the news that he has Congenital Scoliosis, Lorcan has a form called hemivertebra which means half of one side of a vertebra forms while the other side doesn't causing one side of his spine to grow faster than the other , that's where the curve comes form.

We are stunned and devastated with the diagnosis , the ortho doctor talked a bit about options but it was going in one ear and out the other . I beeped his cardiologist when we left and she immediately told me to call a doctor she knew over at the Hospital for Special Surgery in the city, we have an appointment next Thursday. We did do a renal ultrasound after talking to the doctor because apparently problems with the kidneys are not uncommon with this diagnosis , that test went fine so that was a positive.

I am reading a bit online but really I don't want to try and speculate on treatment though surgery will at some point be required, the question is when that will be, right now we are feeling better as we feel we are seeing the right doctor in the right hospital.

Had Lorcan's appointment today at Hospital for Special Surgery , it went great and we are relieved.Staff there were great and the Doctor very personable.

Anyway bottom line is that Lorcan needs surgery but not right now , Doctor Green will observe him and surgery should be around age three to four. Lorcan will have an MRI with anesthesia this February to give a more thorough view of his back and spinal structure and then all going well he will be back for X-Rays every four months to help observe him. After surgery his curve will be fixed and have no restrictions in life .This Doctor explained it as not having half of his vertebrae missing but he has an extra one that grew that he will take out.

So all in all we are happy and no bracing which I dreaded for him.

This Tuesday he has tests for his kidneys and hopefully that will be fine (the association of defects are heart, spine and kidneys).

Just a few things to report but they are a big relief for us. Firstly Lorcan had his one year post surgery echo today and in the words of his cardiologist it looked "superb" , she said she couldn't be more pleased with his progress .

Yesterday we had an appointment with a Genetic doctor to see if what has happened to Lorcan was as a result of chromosome deficiencies. Even though Jessica had amniocentesis testing while pregnant that wasn't detailed enough. So we went there yesterday quite nervous I can tell you , even though to us Lorcan looks great , is developing great and his peds doctor thinks so too I was scared that this Doctor would find something and say his has such and such a syndrome.

Turns out all his chromosome tests were normal , last year all three of us participated in a study at Columbia Presbyterian to monitor children born with congenital heart defects and their parents . This doctor told us that she runs that study and in fact the blood testing they did then on Lorcan was and still is the most advanced they can do , in fact she said that the particular tests are not yet available to public and only for studies.....all in all we couldn't be happier.

The chances of us having a baby born with similar problems she said is about 3% which is only slightly higher than normal.

My grossly inexpert thinking is that you two coming from such far flung heritages --- Wild Geese excepted --- that should give you some more statistical protection against such defects, as the same recessive gene is unlikely to come up on both of your genetic dice rolls.

Glad to hear that all went well with Lorcan's procedures. My son spent the first two years of his life either on amntibiotics or with ear infection. So when he was about two years old we had tubes inserted in each ear. I think he had one mild infection in one ear during the ensuing years. I wish we had done it sooner. I hope the results are just as dramatic for Lorcan.

Some great news for my son , last Thursday he had an MRI under anesthesia at the Hospital for Special Surgery to get a proper look at his scoliosis and more importantly to see if his spinal chord had any abnormalities , the percentage of abnormalities in the spinal chord is high with this type of scoliosis , tumors and the like. Lorcan's MRI showed none of that and in fact the surgeon just told me that he does not need to have surgery at this time, and there is a slight chance that he will not have to do surgery on him at all.

What they will do is watch him twice a year with X-Rays and monitor the curve , there is every chance that it will not get worse and we just continue on that road , he's growing at the proper rate for his age and the surgeon feels that this is the best news possible.

There is also the chance that when he has X-Rays in August that the curve has gotten worse and then surgery might be indicated , even then the surgeon said that the surgery wold be a small procedure and he would only fuse a few vertebra and his future growth would not be affected .

Obviously for us this is the best possible news , MRI shows the spinal chord is fine and no surgery right now and a slight chance none ever.

My feeling is that he will need to have it fixed but the longer he can go without surgery the better.

Re: A New Arrival.

So we found out today that Lorcan will need surgery to fix a problem with his kidneys.

"What is Hydronephrosis?

Hydronephrosis is dilation or stretching of the area of kidneys where urine collects that can occur when there is an obstruction of urine flow somewhere along the urinary tract, most often in the upper section."

In late 2008 when we found the spine problem they did testing on his kidney function and it was found he had mild hydronephrosis on his right kidney, the treatment was a low dose antibiotic once a day for a year and to follow up this week. The hope was that as he grew in size the problem would fix itself, the antibiotic was to make sure he did't get a urinary tract infection. He had a horrible VCUG test today ( tube inserted up his penis and his bladder filled with fluid and
they take images) and it showed that not only did it not fix itself he now had it on the left side
aswell.

I can't tell you how hard it was to be holding him down while the Radiologist was doing the test, remarkably after some initial screaming Lorcan was fine.

The urologist assured us that a quick 15 minute procedure in the OR will fix it with a better than 95% success rate.

Tomorrow he is seeing the cardiologist for his yearly checkup, really hoping for no surprises with his echo.
