(from hell!!!!)

I actually downloaded "Let it Snow" from this record to add to my growing collection of traditional/old-time carols as interpreted by various rock and/or roll artists.

That record totally didn't work that way for me and my fat self.

In honor of Chanukah, which begins on Tuesday night, here's a Tom Lehrer tune -

I LOVE Twisted Sister! Good Long Islanders. I know a lot of the guys in the forum are too young to remember when they were a legendary bar band and the drinking age was 18. Does Hammerheads still exist?

I've had the opportunity to meet Dee several times. He's a nice guy and articulate, a good interview.

I thought you were into less Satanic stuff!

I ran into Dee once at the height of TS popularity. He ran into a trashy jewelry store in Huntington, leaving his red Italian sports car idling outside, whipped out his AmEx gold card and bought a watch with a band made out of of safety pins.

Back on topic -- my latest addition to the holiday mix:

Les Brown and his Band of Reknown tackle The Nutcracker Suite.

I saw him coming out of a jewelry store in Huntington one time -- all 6' 3" and blond curls of him with some pettite young thing (wife?) by his side. Was probably a bit after TS's peak of popularity.

Tough guy to miss.

Amazing that their peak passed while he was in the jewelry store with the engine running.

Gets out of the car a superstar, returns a has-been.

The next time he tried that Gold Card, they rejected him in song.

Back on topic: A surfy version of "Sleigh Ride" by Los Straightjackets is a free iTunes download.

The 'Reens do a bang-up job covering "Rockin Around the Christmas Tree" and cleverly include covers of the Who's TOMMY song "Christmas" and the Ramones' "I don;t want to fight tonight". Deck your halls with your 60s inspired rock and/or roll!

Boy, thanks to Billy and his wishes, my 1982 was awesome!

After all he did for MTV, they repay him by putting "Rock Me Tonite" in heavy rotation. Come on, Marta Quinn! Do something for Billy!

The Greedies were a sometimes band featuring members of Thin Lizzy and ex- Sex Pistols Steve Jones and Paul Cook, here is their classic holiday tune.

A great song! I've had it for years, and I had no idea that was Thin Lizzie and friends.

One day I'll take the time to learn how to imbed images and videos into these posts. Until then:

I always think of The Waitresses bemusedly. They were supposed to play at a senior week event right before I graduated college, but they broke up in the activity director's office right before they were supposed to go on. I don't know why I'm amused rather than pissed off over that, but for some odd reason it's a fun memory.

The picked up that tour with the bass player taking over on vocals. At least that's how they went on at Nassau CC.

melon38 says there is so a video:

Shockingly, I was the editor of the Nassau CC paper at the time! The singer, who was Holly Vincent from Holly and the Italians, actually came on stage with index cards with the lyrics on them.

I love "Christmas Wrapping." And there's another gem on that Ze Christmas record, but only on some of the later pressings, called "It's a Big Country" by Davitt Seigerson (think I spelled the last name wrong.)

Over the weekend I picked up the Twisted Sister DVD of their Christmas concert. It's songs from the album along with some of their classics. Good stuff -- and only $10.

Could have been another show or another year -- I get a sense that group was pretty, um, fluid.

I was at NCC from fall 1982 to spring 1984 before going out to Missouri. They had some fun concerts! I was able to interview Joe Perry during his solo period. Joe was physically in the room, mentally.....

Edgy DC
Dec 17 2007 02:39 PM

That's the period. I PM'd you my brother's name and a friend of his you might remember.

My first rock concert was Dave Edmunds at the NCC Student Union Ballroom.

Rock 'n' roll, baby.

Coincidently, the radio station which operates out of NCC is going to run a (hour long?) program this week called 'A Very Eighties Christmas', which I'm sure will be chock-full of The Waitresses and other like stuff.
Co-host will be (currently MIA) CPFer Patchy Fogg.

Unfortunately there's no web-cast for those out of the area.

If you are interested, I blogged on what I think is the worst Christmas song ever on the Mets Guy blog.

My assorted relatives want to make a list of the 10 worst holiday songs of all time, and I'd love to hear any suggestions....

They're already all over "The Christmas Shoes" like slime on Chipper Jones.

Oates was singing. I mean, really.

Edgy DC
Dec 21 2007 09:46 PM

That's a perfectly cromulent Oates vocal. The failure there is (1) the song is played out and they bring nothing new to it, and (2) the goofy mugging for the camera concept doesn't work at all.
