A year or two ago I briefly daydreamed about converting the UMDB into a book (The Ultimate Mets Reference Book?) but I never advanced it beyond the daydream. Clearly, you did! Congratulations! I'll probably order mine from Amazon, but I expect I'll get a bigger kick out of seeing it on a shelf at Barnes and Noble or Borders.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Dec 17 2007 08:30 AM

Thanks everyone. I was kinda low-keying this until something came out, since it almost got published five years ago and has been an off-and-on thing since. We even had "iubitul" shoot some photos for it in 2003 -- one of those shots will appear in this book, as will MetMichigan's Mercury Mets gear. But I guess a cover image on amazon means it will actually come out.

I have to say, Howie Rose really knocked his part of it out of the park.

Also, the website/numbers database is finally making some progress behind the scenes (people are killing me on-line for saying the website would be back "in August" -- at one point I'd promised opening day, which is a good reason to not announce anything). I was supposed to have finished that part before starting the book, since they were related only in the sense that having an operaple database to refer to while writing would have helped the project go faster.

The fact that the site is still down proves that writing a book is easier than building a website.

I guess somebody's got to ask: how much new material can we expect and how much MbtN Classics?

SteveJRogers
Dec 17 2007 08:26 PM

Yeah I rushed into it because I thought the fact that it was available online for pre-order meant Johnny was low-keying it, like he did on a compendium that he worked on that came out over the summer, which he advertised only on the MBTN blog.

Sorry about that, I should have PMed you.

BTW, Rose was quite a coup, great Met minutia historian. He once told a story on his radio show about his time at Mets Fantasy Camp (it may have been during his trip down there where he did his show from there) where he was issued 36. Rose said he thought he was honoring Koosman, but ended up pitching like Ed Lynch!

Some new stuff, especially with totals of some stats by uni number. There's not a whole lot of the written history that hasn't been touched on before, there's just more of it. You have to understand the web site was only written long enough so as to surround the photos.

Fleshed out with lists, a lot of stuff on the history of the Met uniform, and some familiar Met history stories as viewed thru uni numberdom.

The Mets declined to participate in interviews, but Kelvin Torve didn't.

I'd call it a good gift for the wannabe hardcore Met geek and a useful reference book for the pre-geeked.

SJR -- I don;t mind you brought it up. Member promoting is not my cup of meat.

Actually a great resource for Johnny may have been Dennis D'Agostino's "This Date In Mets History" that came out in 1979, though it never was redone after that, which is a good jumping off point, if you don't have access to programs and yearbooks, or if you were lucky enough back then, media guides (since the mid-1990s the media guides have been made available for public consumption). It has a list of uni numbers from 62-79.

Benjamin Grimm
Dec 18 2007 10:06 AM

I got a copy of D'Agostino's book when it came out and have been waiting in vain for 27 years for a new edition.

(Actually, I probably stopped thinking about it almost 25 years ago, but you get my point.)

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Dec 18 2007 10:19 AM

To bring this full-circle, g-fafif introduced me to "This Date in Met History" and I've since been in touch with its author, who recently wrote text to accompany a collection of old Brooklyn Dodgers photographs published last year. I got the impression from him that "This Date" didn't exactly sell a whole lot, not that book about the Mets ever do, especially in the early 80s!

I see umdb as the obvious successor to "this date." Just the collection of fan memories you have there would be a great book.

I'm proud to say I gave J.C.L. Bucket copies of the uniform-number pages (covering '62 to '80) back in the site's infancy. Led to the great "Did Hubie really wear 62 debate?" of 2003.

I don't think Davidoff looks at the issue deeply enough, considering it's a decision that will last allegedly for all time, but there are worse ideas than retiring Mays' number because it'd be good tto honor him in New York one last time.

But, in the end, the Mets would have to justify that in perpetuity. Can you justify it by stating that they're largely honoring what he brought to New York as a Giant?

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Feb 07 2008 07:44 AM

The Mets could (and should) settle the 24 controversy once and for all by retiring 24 for Joan Payson.

Re: Now we know why the new MBTN.com is still coming soon!

Here is the preview

What is interesting is that the final product looks like this

The lettering is smoother, and I guess Sky Horse Publishing wanted to cash in on the current state of Met-dom by switching Mookie with David Wright.

Though I'd love to know why the heck they switched the Straw card. That seems kind of a random switch!

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Feb 10 2008 05:14 PM

Word was that the book would be in NY area B&Ns first, then expanding to other areas based on how it did. But I have zero insight as to how that works. I also heard they might be available at "a major East Coast retailer" but I'm not sure what the status of that is.

The publishing people handled all the OKs on the photos, although we had to provide them. I believe Topps tends to allow this. I don't think any $$ changed hands. Those are actually my bb cards inside.

The cover "changed" because the early version was just a dummy for purposes of catalogs and other stuff that had an earlier date than our finish line. I nixed the "3" out of fear we'd get sued by that NUMB3RS show. Not sure why they chose which Strawberry, (edit) .. Oh I know why: Above he's running off the page, where you generally want your photos facing the middle.

Maybe it's a bad res, but I can't even see Wright's number.

I realize that I'm way too wedded to the historic imagery of the site, but these are the images I wanted to see on the front and back covers of the book.

By the way, you need a tag or two on the numerical roster page, to make the page break correctly. The text of that page doesn't begin until the end of the left-hand links, while the right-hand column has no matter at all. It's probaly just a matter of needing lne breaks every ten numbers or so.

I'm not sure what AG means by left-hand links, but yes in both Firefox
2.0.0.12 and Internet Explorer 7.0.6* the text starts after the funky
picture -- to the bottom right of the picture.

Also, in Firefox the first row of the numbers on the list of numbers is not
lined up with the rest of the list and in Explorer it splashes out to the right
into the sunset instead of being in rows and columns.

AG/DC
Mar 03 2008 07:30 PM

I meant under the left hand links and polls and stuff. Here at home, usinging Explorer 7.0 and Windows Vista, the text starts in the right place, but the numbers continue into the blue border on the right.

On the Home-Teams Panel at the SABR NYC Conference, Mid0Manhattan Library. I believe I go on at 10:30am. There's a charge of like $10 for the event (not sure of that). Lotsa other guests including Kevin Kernan of the Post.

Working on an appearance in Queens. If you guys have a local book shop near where you are (L.I., Jersey, Conn/Westchester?) that you could suggest I'd like to appear there too.[/quote:1qsbtfkk]

As a rule, Barnes & Noble stores are very amenable to these kinds of appearances.

If you ever make an appearance at the one in Princeton/West Windsor (look it up under Princeton, but it's within West Windsor's boundaries), I'd be more than happy to give you a ride from the train station to the store and back.

Mets By The Numbers, by Jon Springer and Matthew Silverman

Mets By The Numbers: A Complete Team History Of The Amazin' Mets By Uniform Number, by Jon Springer and Matthew Silverman, is a unique resource for Mets fans. It is a history of the team as told by uniform number.

Think about it - at any moment in time, only one player can wear any given uniform number. Mets By The Numbers catalogs every Mets player through the 2007 season, as well as every uniform number that he has ever worn (Jeff McKnight wore five separate uniforms as a Met, earning him the nickname The Jeff McKnighmare).

The book begins with an entertaining forward by longtime Mets announcer Howie Rose, but the meat of the book is the detailed discussion of each uniform number. From #1: Leading Off: Mookie Wilson to #17: "I'm Keith Hernandez" to #25: Bobby Boo and beyond, each chapter is rich with inside references for knowledgeable fans to simple statistics for those who are newer to Mets fandom.

I should point out that I've known Mr. Springer for several years, and find his mbtn.net website to be an invaluable resource. After a facelift this past year, mbtn.net is back online, and it continues to document the uniforms that Mets players wear. What the Mets By The Numbers book adds is much more in the way of anecdotal description of the players and their histories with their uniform numbers. The website is a great resource, especially for Internet-savvy fans, but the book is for those who enjoy reminiscing and lingering over the memories of the Mets at different periods in time.

Mets By The Numbers is the perfect complement to any Mets library. Buy it for the avid Mets fan in your life.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Mar 19 2008 08:29 PM

themetfairy
Mar 19 2008 08:40 PM

Gary commented about the interview with Matthew Silverman the other day, how it was mentioned that nobody was wearing #17, and that as if on cue they showed the player who is wearing #17 this spring. Then Gary and Keith went off on a tangent about Lima. But "Mets by the Numbers" and Matthew Silverman were specifically mentioned by Gary at the top of the discussion.

Just think - if you were more into self-promotion and less into running after your toddler, they might have mentioned you instead of Silverman (and might have had this discussion a week ago).

Love the book, it was a great companion through a long week staying at the hospital, regarding the interview with Howie.....

I know your schedule probably precludes this, but would you be interested in doing another call-in show?

Knowing what I know now and having been through it, I don’t think I’d be comfortable doing a show while I have an affiliation with a team. I think the best way to do a show is to be unencumbered, unattached, and feel free to criticize and opine with no fear of being accused of having an agenda or having to pull your punch. I went though that. It cost me dearly. And I’m too old for that kind of aggravation. I would much prefer one or the other.

In saying that he went through that and it cost him dearly any idea what he is talking about, the NY Rangers gig?

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Mar 20 2008 01:31 PM

I didn;t ask but I assume it related to what Frayed Knot was saying on the main board -- that there was a "Mets Extra" show that was part of the Mets thing, and then the regular call-in show part of the WFAN broadcast where the lines blurred.

Frayed Knot
Mar 20 2008 02:06 PM

Yeah, I think the key phrase there is; "don’t think I’d be comfortable doing a show while I have an affiliation with a team" ... best way to do a show is to be unencumbered, unattached, and feel free to criticize and opine with no fear of being accused of having an agenda or having to pull your punch.

He never had a problem with the Ranger radio gig (that I know of) and only left there when offered the job as the lead TV guy for the Islanders. Remember that hockey isn't like baseball where some turn down TV and choose to stay in radio and he was never the NYR main radio guy anyway(Marv still was in those days).
I'm sure the Islander gig was for many times the money, plus there was the implication (later true of course) that the Met job would open up on the same cable channel.

If you were in DC, prolly not. I'm told they were only selling in stores in the MY metro area. Be like my Aussie friend here and get it delivered!

Last night we had this event in NJ where we were upstairs sucking the carpet for drops from gary carter's money-printing press downstairs. There was a line out the door to buy his new book (@ $25 a pop!) and get his sig and the books were flying out of there. We did OK as his satellite.

I'm completely nervous around Met-Lovin Big Shots so I didn't really talk to GC other than to say I'd bookmarked Chapter 8 in the book I'd just given him. He was, as always, smiling and polite, saying "I'm really looking forward to reading this!" and just as always, left me wondering whether he meant that or just said that. Gotta love him. Wore a Mets world series ring. Can't imagine what's in his new book that isn't in his previous ones -- I'll get a copy eventually I suppose.

At some point Kase, I am going to shamelessly promote my own review of the book in this thread (not to be confused with a project I did for my journalism class)! Coming to that website listed in my sig...assuming I ever update the bloody thing!

Along with a post I keep planning on doing here but never quite getting to, a dissertation of various Met reference books through the years (as opposed to flat out story telling books like Lang's, Koppett's and Gollenback's tomes) which MBTN: The Book will make the top of the list.

Kong76
May 07 2008 07:08 PM

My issue is more that perhaps we don't need to be pointing
out where posters went to school or posting links with pictures
of them here. Maybe it's me, but I find it kind of stalky (pro-
bably not a real word) or inappropriate on some level. That
stuff is on the internet, let people find it on their own if they
want to or not is all I mean.

Like I said, maybe it's me.

Benjamin Grimm
May 07 2008 07:13 PM

Good point. Very good point. Nobody here should be posting links about other members. Let the person post their own links, if they choose to do so. No one else should be doing it.

Rockin' Doc
May 07 2008 07:48 PM

I believe it is (or should be) common courtesy to allow individuals that are photographed to either approve or disapprove the use of their image before posting it on a public site. Definitely using a members real name without their approval is innapropriate, in my view.

Like KC said, I may be paranoid. I really don't care about my image, but I would be upset if someone posted a picture of my kids without my prior approval.

He has an archived interview with Art Shamsky up, but he's taking his sweet time introducing him.

I tuned in at midnight, attempted to wait for you and Matt, listened to Joey for 15 minutes of noodling on life among the residents of Spanish Harlem and his experience as a long-ago producer for Barry White and found myself ready to leave a lifesize-hole in the wall a la Bugs Bunny running through a house. I turned it off when he promised a doo-wop group and didn't mention youse. I fell asleep shortly thereafter.

Hope it sold some books.

My newspaper has a charity auction where employees can bid on all the books, CDs and goodness knows what that gets sent here for us to review. Today I won the book "100 Things a Mets Fan Should Do Before He Dies" by some guy named Matt -- who clearly needs a co-author who knows a lot about uniform numbers. Now THAT'S a book!

:)

I'm sure it's good. I'll be able to take a closer look after work. I also won Gary Carter's book and the Captain and Tennille's Christmas CD, showing that you can indeed occasionally win with a minimum 50-cent bid.

Christmas
Christmas keeps us together
Think of Christmas
Whenever
Some sweet-talking
Holiday comes
You tell those bums
To stop
'Cause Christmas is all right
Stop
'Cause Christmas is snow white
Thanks for buying this CD
And keep it together
'Til December

If you're too cheap to buy one, you can try to win one -- Adam Rubin and the Daily News are having a contest.

D'oh. I didn;t realize it was ESPN radio local in Richmond, Virginia until they called and said "30 seconds!"

I was expecting Max Kellerman to call.

Oh I kicked ass as usual.

Preparing to do a "big show" and getting a small one actually relaxed me some.

Kong76
Jul 03 2008 10:23 AM

I had on 1050 am and Kellerman had Bob Ryan on and I muttered under
my breath, "well there's no shame in getting bumped by Bob Ryan."

I didn't realize how regionalized ESPN radio is, but I guess it makes sense,
as Kellerman just goes on and on about Yank-me crap and they probably
don't care about that in Virginia.

How about a book signing at Nats Park when the Mets are in town August 12? Feinstein signed his Glavine/Mussina book at the team store so maybe you can sell and sign your fine book that night.

The Mets are hosting the Nationals on 9/9-10. The Mets will be in DC 9/15-18. Perhaps AG/DC and the newly minted (9/14) Mrs. AG/DC will be spending their honeymoon at Nats park.
