Glavine was the winning pitcher in the Mets' 7-3 victory against the Padres on July 20. Beginning with that start, he has walked two batters in 27 innings. His ERA is 3.48 in his last eight starts and, overall, at its second-lowest point this season.

Carlos Beltran is hitting .348 during the day, second in the NL.

When I read that Reyes would be getting the day off, I wondered who would be playing short in his place. I completely forgot that Woodward had been a regular at that position for the Jays. I feel a little better now, and am trying to remove the image of Jose Offerman at shortstop (his original position) from my mind.

I'm still trying to remove the image of Offerman at any position on the field from my mind.

I once met a Boston sculptor named Khalil Gibran and yeah he was a white guy of Lebanese ancestory. He was really funny and insightful.

Cliff Floyd doubles in Beltran. 1-0 good guys.

Beltran's tenth steal prior to Floyd's double makes him the sixth Met to have double digit steals this year.

And the first time the Mets have done so since 1989:

Hey, I have just as many nightmares as you do. At least Beltran's steal erased that piece of him from the Mets record books.

Can someone of the Mets please figure out how to pitch to Randa (is he still mad at us for trading him?) and the entire Giles family?

Willie said earlier this season that if he was stuck, he'd turn to Glavine to pinch-hit. Not a terrible idea in the sixteenth inning or something crazy.

Cammie going out on a stretcher. Beltran appears to have some shoulder injury.

This is bad.

Beltran able to walk off the field. Cammie is strapped to a board and will
be driven off the field and somewhat immobilized. He has moved parts of his
upper body (watching football, that's a big picture good sign, I guess).

Duq says Cameron is on his way to the hospital and had cuts on both lips. but was otherwise alert and responsive. Beltran -- at least for now -- is relatively okay, with a cut on his face and some shoulder soreness.

Dammit.

Edgy DC
Aug 11 2005 06:26 PM

He played in a game at Ebbets field when Pete Reiser (a young star who shortened his career considerably by running into fences in the pre-padding days) injured himself so badly he was given last rites on the field.

SAN DIEGO (AP) -- New York Mets right fielder Mike Cameron was taken off the field on a stretcher following a frightening head-to-head collision with center fielder Carlos Beltran in the seventh inning of a 2-1 loss to the San Diego Padres on Thursday.

The game was delayed for about 13 minutes after the diving crash. Cameron lay on the field and was tended to by trainers from both teams before being taken to Mercy Hospital.

"He's surprisingly alert and doing well," Mets assistant general manager Jim Duquette said. "He's alert and moving, and that's a good sign.

Duquette said Cameron experienced dizziness and had some pain in the front part of his shoulder and a cut on his upper lip. He said Beltran was examined by the Padres' doctor at the stadium and "everything came out normal."

Cameron lifted up his head at one point, and shielded his eyes from the sun as he was put onto a stretcher by paramedics, lifted onto a cart and driven off the field. He was immobilized and put in a neck brace.

Beltran got up after a few minutes after the collision and walked off the field on his own power. He left the game with a sore left shoulder and a cut on the face.

According to the guys in the booth today, Cliff Floyd reported a leftfield heckler, right after the collision, saying, "Hey, Floyd, you're next!"

ScarletKnight41
Aug 14 2005 05:11 PM

Damn - I've met that heckler.

Seriously - an axe murderer (i.e., someone I've met on the Internet) once removed - an Internet friend of mine knows this guy Harry the Heckler at Petco, and she told me to look for him last summer when we were out there.

Hopefully it's not the same guy. But this guy is known for heckling the opposing team at Petco.
