Here are your subjects for the play-in round:

A Boy Named Seo vs themetfairy -- Tim McCarver
Fman99 vs G-Fafif -- Mike Maddux

The rules are simple. There's your topic; use a song, any song, and Metify the lyrics. (Perhaps someone has the link to some of the old contests?) Once both players are ready to go -- discuss via PM or via this thread -- either person starts a new "poll" thread and posts their song lyrics. The other person should follow in post two in the thread.

Discussion ensues for 24-48 hours (depending on weekends), and whoever wins, wins. Ties will be determined by a playoff round.

Did I forget anything? I hope not. Let's get it on! Let's try to get the play-in rounds done by the end of the weekend so we can kick it into the first round.

Benjamin Grimm
Jan 09 2008 12:05 PM

Mike Maddux???

Wow, I'm glad I'm on the outside looking in.

As Tim McCarver might say, that's a "tough assignment."

seawolf17
Jan 09 2008 12:06 PM

Hey, random's random. Gotta bring it, fellas.

Edgy DC
Jan 09 2008 12:07 PM

Don't give them Tim McCarver ideas!

I am not cool with being seeded behind KC. Not!

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Jan 09 2008 12:08 PM

Yeah, that's why I argued to limit topix to the parodiable.

However, both contestants having the same topic at least makes it fair, and I'm glad to see it is on. Good work.

seawolf17
Jan 09 2008 12:09 PM

We'll see how it goes; we can always tweak it back for '09.

Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Jan 09 2008 12:15 PM

I've got three Maddux parodies bouncing around my head right now.

They all suck, probably, but they're there.

seawolf17
Jan 09 2008 12:14 PM

I pulled next round's numbers, and it's an interesting mix of "okay" and "uh-oh".

Edgy DC
Jan 09 2008 12:16 PM

Don't listen to Dickshot. His greatest parody ever was for Tom Sturdivant.

Did you eliminate coaches?

seawolf17
Jan 09 2008 12:17 PM

No, coaches are in there, but to make it simpler, we'll allow any coach who was also a player only one slot on the list.

edit: I actually pulled numbers all the way through the finals, just so it's done. I'll pull tiebreaker numbers as the need arises.

seawolf17
Jan 09 2008 12:21 PM

Ah, screw it, I posted the polls. I'll do that so they're easy to find, and I'll sticky them as well until each contest is over.

Edgy DC
Jan 09 2008 12:22 PM

Yikey. I look forward to the final round of locking horns over Greg Pavlick.

I'm not sure I like you knowing the upcoming assignments in your bracket while I wallow in ignorance.

seawolf17
Jan 09 2008 12:23 PM

Should I post them all the way through? I suppose that would give folks the opportunity to prepare a little bit, especially those folks who are awaiting their first round matches.

Benjamin Grimm
Jan 09 2008 12:24 PM

I think that makes sense. In the past, we were always able to mull over future songs because we had names on our list.

Edgy DC
Jan 09 2008 12:25 PM

I think you should turn the draw over to a non-combatant.

Edgy DC
Jan 09 2008 12:27 PM

By the way, why not bump this action to the main forum?

sharpie
Jan 09 2008 12:30 PM

I agree with Edgy both that draws should be given to a non-combatant and that these should be on the main page.

I do kind of like the idea of having a while to work out a song.

seawolf17
Jan 09 2008 12:32 PM

I'll post all the matchups over the "vs" the rest of the way. Should I move all the threads to the Baseball forum?

Edgy DC
Jan 09 2008 12:32 PM

Move 'em.

themetfairy
Jan 09 2008 12:38 PM

What's our time frame here? FYI, I'll be out of town Friday-Saturday, and won't have much time to write this weekend. Should I try to have something good to go by tomorrow, or should we wait until Monday?

seawolf17
Jan 09 2008 12:42 PM

Moved, and updated to include all the matchups.

fairy, I'd say let's try to get it up today... if you have to wait until Monday, that's okay, and Monk will have to wait a bit.

Fman99
Jan 09 2008 02:48 PM

Sweet.

One question -- is it OK to post the song artist/title that I am parodying, so that the voters can get the tune in their head as they are reading the Met-ted lyrics?

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Jan 09 2008 02:55 PM

The voting public generally demands this but to me it's always more fun to see if I can't pick it up myself.

Perhaps we can encourage the posting of the "to the tune of" stuff & video, etc etc below the lyrics.

seawolf17
Jan 09 2008 05:16 PM

I, personally, like to see a link to some sort of audio and/or video, because I like to try to sing along. But I can't speak for everyone.

metsmarathon
Jan 09 2008 06:43 PM

linking to youtube is a good idea. it adds both an audio and a visual component to the song. it might not help garner votes, but it'll make the voting process more enjoyable.

metsmarathon
Jan 09 2008 06:44 PM

I must say that I now find the annual Parody contest is more enjoyable as an observer than as a participant. It's a lot less time consuming and stressful just being a voter.

Best of luck to all that are participating this year. I look forward to seeing everyone's contributions.

You ever go shopping at holiday time, and you're a little overwhelmed, but you think you found something appropriate for your brother? You get in line, thinking, "Oh, well, at least I found something appropriate for my brother. That's cool. At least I got that out of the way."

Then you're in line for five or ten minutes humming "Meet the Mets" to yourself, and suddenly you look down and go, "What is this piece of shit in my hands? Did I really pull this off the shelf/rack? People are actually watching me waiting in line to purchase this! My God, this is the worst gift ever."

Sometimes I go back to the shelf and ditch the offending present. Sometimes I wait for a few minutes longer and the doubt passes and maybe I have a perfectly cromulent gift.

My point is that I've had my song in hand for two days now waiting for Marathon, and I've been on that sort of trip --- a roller coaster of CAHNfidence. I've gone back to the shelf and returned to the line a few times now.

COME ON, MARATHON!

Nymr83
Jan 17 2008 01:59 PM

Polls can be set to run for X number of days, if we were to NOT start the thread until both players have agreed they are ready to go we could then easily start it up with 1 day to vote.

Fman99
Jan 18 2008 12:21 PM

I'm sorry to be repetitive, but I cannot access YouTube or Photobucket from work. And so I have no idea what songs/artists most of these parodies are of and therefore can't place a proper vote.

If contestants could just type song X by artist/band Y when they post their lyrics it would help.

Thanks.

Maybe start a separate thread for lyrics/song titles so that they're available for those who want them?

MFS62
Jan 30 2008 06:16 AM

Here's my suggestion for resolving the suspicious votes issue raised in the curley shuffle contest, tongue-in-cheek or not.

Everyone who votes has to post in that thread, even if its just one word - the name of the person for whom they voted. Only vote totals supported by a post will be counted.
That keeps the odds even (as Andy Devine used to say in those old western movies).

Later

themetfairy
Jan 30 2008 06:48 AM

I don't like that suggestion. I often have had to make tough decisions between worthy songs. I'd prefer not to vote than to have to vote publicly in such cases.

The flip side - I'm sure many of my friends voted against my submission in the contest, and I'm fine with that (I can totally understand why Seo beat me - his parody rocked!). But I'd rather not have to read everyone's reasoning behind it and have my entry picked apart in detail.

sharpie
Jan 30 2008 06:51 AM

I agree with Met Fairy. I almost never say which way I voted.

MFS62
Jan 30 2008 08:15 AM

Then just say "I voted", and not say for whom.

When someone (KC?) wrote that he had forgotten he had voted, then logged in with his other screen name to check, the light went on. If you have multiple screen names, what prevents someone from voting multiple times?

My suggestion would prevent multiple votes by folks with more than one screen name (see the comments in the original Curley Shuffle thread).

Later

Kong76
Jan 30 2008 08:17 AM

I didn't say that.

MFS62
Jan 30 2008 08:22 AM

That's why the question mark. You're right. This is what you wrote:

]I had a similar issue as did irish in that when I looked at this last night
(signed in as me) it showed results but I didn't think I voted. Then this
morning on my work computer (signed in as me) it gave me the op-
portunity to vote so I did.

I thought it meant you used two diffferent screen names.

Lo siento mucho.

But the possibility of such a thing (multiple voting) happening still exists.
And the loophole should be closed.

Later

Kong76

I've met 95% of the people who post here regularly and trust them not to

'Kay, I'm ready.

Who starts the thread me or you?

themetfairy

It's going to be a Soupcan/Transmonk final.

When are we getting started?

Since this is the final round, shall we have 48 hours to cast our votes?

Oh, and the runner up shouldn't expect any shrimp at this point - it's long gone....

Monkey Man - If we schedule the finale for Monday morning (3/10) would that be cool with you?

TransMonk

Sounds great...3/10 it is.

Congrats to T'monk ... nice job.

I un-sticky'd the last two threads and then realized that the bracket still needed
to be updated so I apologize for premature house cleaning.

So *bump*

I second the grats. You knocked me out two years running but no hard feelings, I'll get you next time.

Grats to the 'Can also for making it to the finals.

There were like, no gross miscarriages of justice in the whole contest, which I think is a first. Congrats to Soup and Monk.

Except, of course, you somehow out-polling me despite me out-Kanehling you nine ways to Sunday.

John Cougar Lunchbucket

That wasn't gross.

This year was fun...as was last year. Thanks to all who participated and voted. Great contest.
