Best of luck to Fman. Here goes nothin'...

"Brother Maddux," to the tune of "Brother Louie," Stories' No. 1 hit from the glorious late summer of 1973.

Original lyrics here:

YouTube video treatment here:
http://youtube.com/watch?v=exl0oSfTSoY

Mike was bad
As McKnight
His ERA soared
High as a kite
Danger, danger when you
Sign the wrong Maddux
Man, you have a terrible plight

Pitching bad
No, not good
This Maddux did the best that he could
But when he came to Shea
To eat up middle innings
On base is where
Three runners stood

Michael Michael Maddux
Oh why
Couldn't we get the Maddux
Of Cy?

Michael Michael Maddux
Oh my
No resemblance to that
Greg Maddux guy

While Mike
Allowed runs
Greg recorded wins by the tons
As he led the Braves toward
Another first-place finish
Michael was knocked
Flat on his buns

Last names don't
Tell the tale
Madduxes do sometimes fail
As his brother grew
Into a Hall of Fame hurler
Mike's DNA
Grew only stale

Michael Michael Maddux
Oh no
Not a damn thing
Like his talented bro'

Michael Michael Maddux
Oh hell
Mike Glavine could have pitched
Just as well

Smokin' hot right out of the chute - well done!

Outstanding work, G-Fafif... especially the punchline.

Man, the Stories. How high were they?

I never knew the name, or the artist, who did this song.

Well, allow me to retort.

Maddux

My name is Maddux
Pitched here back in ‘94
Maybe you thought genetics would help
Maybe I was left at my parents’ door
If you hear something late at night
The sounds of baseballs launched into flight
Ask a Mets fan what it was
Ask a Mets fan what it was
Ask a Mets fan what it was

My name is Maddux
Came here back in ‘93
The worst team money could buy
Komiyama was the “Japanese me”
They only hit me until I cry
And after that I asked my brother why
‘Cause he just won another Cy.
‘Cause he just won another Cy.
Another Gold Glove, another Cy.

Yes I think I’m OK
I just gave up 4 runs again
Well if you ask that’s not what I’ll say
I’ll blame the defense or the sound of planes
I’d guess I’d like to be alone
Instead of being baseball’s Frank Stallone
Just don’t give me the ball again
Just don’t give me the ball again
Just don’t give me the ball again

Wow.

Impressive work by both.

My favorite lyrics:

]Mike was bad
As McKnight

]I’d guess I’d like to be alone
Instead of being baseball’s Frank Stallone

I underestimated the potential of Mike Maddux as a topic.

]Komiyama was the “Japanese me”

Brilliant!

Yeah, I went with the Fman.

seawolf17
Jan 10 2008 12:40 PM

I went F-man too.

The more obscure the player, the better the potential parody, methinks.

I can't remember who I voted for now.

Mendoza Line
Jan 10 2008 06:06 PM

I just cast the tying vote for Fman. Fafif did a fine job, too, but the Frank Stallone line decided it for me.

Fman99
Jan 10 2008 06:14 PM

Wow, a tie.

I liked G's song too. I was happy just to make a respectable showing, this being my first Met song lyric parody contest and all.

I don't know about 8:23. But 9:09 sees the Fman in the lead. Smells like a victory, no?

seawolf17
Jan 11 2008 07:19 AM

Indeed it does. Congrats to the rookie! We'll start the first round, as well as the other play-in, on Monday.

Congrats to Fman99 - well done!

But the real winner is Greg, who gets first dibs at the goodies in the Loosers' Lounge....

Tipping cap the Fman's way. Who knew Mike Maddux could bring such joy to anybody besides opposing batters?

Really, an excellent leadoff match. May the spirit of Frank Stallone inhabit all contests.

Now... what rhymes with Howard...

Was I supposed to save some? I think there's still some Ritzes and spray-on cheez in the corner.

Last year I was the first into the lounge, and the shrimp was gone before anyone else ever got there.

So you're just upholding tradition!

Willets Point

If I recall correctly, the rules for the Losers' Lounge is that everything is BYO, so if Fman brought shrimp there's no shame in his eating them all.

I'm sorry to see G-Fafif go, as the man sure knows how to summon a blast from the past.
