Actually, got a sudden burst of creativity. Voting can start whenever you post yours.

Hot summer night, July '91
A long game, but we haven't won
You were there, on the top step
Mets coach, can't recall you yet

Doc, Doc Edwards, give me the news
For the Mets, what did you do?
No way, can't place your face
Got a bad case of not remembrin' you

"You're hired" was the pretty word
Moved coach Buddy over to third
Get to the playoffs, on you we'd rely
Sadly, you weren't that kind of guy

Doc, Doc Edwards, give me the news
For the Mets, what did you do?
No way, can't place your face
Got a bad case of not remembrin' you
Whooaaa

We kept you on, after Davey got axed
Help Buddy as manager, all we asked

Only modest success we'd approach
In your two years as bench coach
Next to them on the dugout plank
But about you, Doc, my mind's just blank

Doc, Doc Edwards, give me the news
For the Mets, what did you do?
No way, can't place your face
Got a bad case of not remembrin' you

I figure we all would've thought of using it.

Wow, even I recognize the song. "Doctor, Doctor, give me the news. I've got a bad case, of loving you."

Down every road there's always one more city
I'm a professional skipper, the minors is my home
I played some ball back in my younger days
Even played with the Yankees for a spell
I’d later managed in Cleveland for three hundred and eighty games
Lord it felt like I was in jail

I’d thought I’d settle down but then Cashen called me
A Met coach for two years was a nice bone
Down every road there's always one more city
I'm a professional skipper, the minors is my home

I’ve been in Texas now, with some luxury
Been in the game for fifty years it’s been so long
Once I managed the longest pro game in history
Guess it’s the story of my life all along.

I guess soon I’d settle down but the game won't let me
A skipper must be a rolling stone
Down every road there's always one more city
I'm a professional skipper, the minors is my home

I'm a professional skipper, the minors is my home

SJR kind of skimmed the Met angle but he gave a stirring portrait of a baseball lifer (to Merle Haggard, no less). Gwreck pleaded memory lapse. We seem to be getting a good bit of "I don't remember this person" themes in the early going, which is certainly an honest enough tack. The one thing I seem to remember about Edwards was he was allegedly pulling the strings behind Harrelson, which certainly didn't make Buddy look good.

Doc, Doc Edwards made me laugh. I'm A Professional Skipper made me feel. I like laughing and I like feeling. Tonight, however, I have to feel.

Great efforts by both.

This one was supposed to have finished by 5:27 yesterday. I believe SJR was winning at that point but I couldn't swear to it.

seawolf17
Jan 17 2008 06:58 AM

Damn - thought I checked them all last night for completeness. I think we'll have to give this one to gwreck.

sharpie
Jan 17 2008 06:59 AM

It was tied about 11 last night.

seawolf17
Jan 17 2008 07:04 AM

Shit. Tiebreaker?

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Jan 17 2008 07:21 AM

Yeah, Rogers was leading last night by 1 vote when I looked.

metirish
Jan 17 2008 07:26 AM

I voted after midnight this morning and I'm sure SJR was leading by one then, I didn't know it was supposed close yesterday.

sharpie
Jan 17 2008 07:27 AM

I would award it to Rogers but it isn't my call (and I voted the other way).

AG/DC
Jan 17 2008 07:32 AM

I voted after the deadline, and I think I threw Rogers up by one. I say tiebreaker.

soupcan
Jan 17 2008 07:35 AM

Is a deadline a deadline or not?

I voted for Gwreck but roolz iz roolz, no?

I think if a tiebreaker entails both guys writing completely new songs that's kinda unfair to SJR.

I wonder if it's possible to look in the database to see which votes were cast when?

I'll take a peek...

sharpie
Jan 17 2008 07:39 AM

This is like those voting machine scandals.

Benjamin Grimm
Jan 17 2008 07:42 AM

Nope. The database shows who voted, but not how or when.

AG/DC
Jan 17 2008 07:51 AM

I'm telling you that just before I put up my song last night, I voted in this one and threw Steve up 12-11, and quickly realized that it was late, and was consumed with guilt.

I swear as a boy scout --- one who spent about two years and never made tenderfoot --- but a boy scout nonetheless.

On second thought maybe Gwreck should win this.

26 total votes were cast - and that's been about average for each of the contests so far. That tells me that there was no unfair advantage given to Gwreck. It just took longer for the regular voters to get to it.

So maybe a tiebreaker is fair.

Benjamin Grimm
Jan 17 2008 07:57 AM

According to the Constitution, which, according to Mike Huckabee, hasn't yet been ratified by God, Dick Cheney gets to break the tie.

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Jan 17 2008 08:04 AM

I will say ther evening start of the contest kinda threw off the vote rthym of the first few challenges and that could 'splain the late-arriving votes.

AG/DC
Jan 17 2008 08:06 AM

We also failed to tack it up at the top of the forum.

soupcan
Jan 17 2008 08:10 AM

Okay so are there actual tiebreaker rules?

sharpie
Jan 17 2008 08:10 AM

It was tacked until I started this brouhaha this morning.

I guess a tiebreaker is in order. Also, I think it should be incumbent on whoever posts their song last to note the score at closing time.

seawolf17
Jan 17 2008 08:20 AM

Yeah, let's go to a tiebreaker, in the interest of fairness. I'll draw a new name and start a new post.

Gwreck
Jan 17 2008 08:44 AM

Edit: redundant.

I like Rogers song, believe it or not. Country really works for this story.

Even if I wasn't anywhere near a computer/mobile internet at 5:21 last night?

Another late Rogers vote makes it 14-13.

Roughly. Don't let it hang another 18 hours.
