Church to be challenged by Pagans?

Or at least [u:714572b917]A[/u:714572b917] Pagan anyway

Mets deal two minor leaguers: OFer Corey Coles
and pitcher Ryan Meyers

in exchange for the man with the wonderfully contradictory name: Angel Pagan
The switch-hitting Pagan, 27 in July, was a one-time NYM farmhand who has spent the last two seasons with the Cubs.
Decent pop, not too much OBP, and better as a LH batter over his 300+ ML ABs (so maybe not such a great platoon candidate).

I think Pagan will give the Mets the luxury of having somebody other than Carlos Gomez to call up in case of an injury. I don't see him being much more than that. So it certainly doesn't hurt, but it might not help all that much.

Sounds to me as if they just made ND Chavez less vital.

He's the new Ben Johnson... only maybe this guy can contribute something.

And I don't think either guy we gave up will turn into Heath Bell. Not that our pen could have used his 93 innings or anything...

It's certainly possible, although I'd much rather sign Kielty than give a roster spot to Pagan should one open up.

As has been mentioned here before, his name is a text book oxymoron.

I think the trade can mean one of three things:

1) It sets up a trade of one of the young outfield prospects.

2) It allows Gomez to play a full season at AAA to hone his skills.

3) Omar really likes the way Pagan's game has developed, and needs a righty hitting good outfielder to go along with Endy. (Pagan, a switch hitter, has shown more power from the right side and better average from the left side)

4) Omar woke up screaming when he saw Easley playing the outfield in a dream. Angel becomes the only experienced center fielder on the roster behind Beltran. While he can play center well, I think of Endy as spending a lot of time as the semi-regular left fielder this year.

EDIT: What happened to my avatar of Doc Gooden? Looks like it killed the format of this thread. Edit 2: Looks like this has been fixed. Thanks to whoever did it.

"Well" might be understating how Endy plays the OF. I'd argue he's the best defensive outfielder on the team (yes, better than Beltran). Besides, if Alou and Beltran were somehow both out at the same time, I would fully expect Chavez to be in center anyway.

Yeah, but that was number four of three, so I wasn't sure what to make of it.

Rethought my post. Inserted #2 (Give Gomez more minor league time).
Changed the numbers, but not the sentence.

My bad.

A cool thing about Angel is that he has another year of options.

Yes. I don't like him as a mainstay in the outfield, but as a first call-up he could be very useful.
