CPF Caucuses

Okay, the Iowa caucuses are tomorrow. It's time to pony up to our preferences and our predictions.

First, who, in each party, would you prefer to see win the Presidential nomination.

If you have a party preference, please don't pick the opposing party candidate you think would be most vulnerable in November. Instead, pick the candidate that you think would make the best president, or at least, the one who's least unpalatable. Remember, the nominee, whoever he or she is, could end up as the next President.

Then, after you list your preferences, give us your predictions, not for Iowa (though you can include that if you wish) but for who will be the two nominees.

I'll start:

My preferences are Biden and McCain.

My predictions are Clinton and Romney. (The Republican side is the toughest to choose. There are still so many things that can happen.)

I think you should make a polling thread, and respect the anoonymous sanctity of the booth.

i have to admit that i don't pay nearly enough attention to politics, be they national or state/local. i also have to admit that i am weary of politics and politicians, and am convinced that we've thoroughly perverted the democratic ideal by continuing to vote in corrupt politicians, either out of self-servingness or because they check the right boxes on the hot button issues.

that said, on the democratic side, of which i'm too clueless, i think i like biden ,and am intrigued by obama, but i think he's more talk and message than actual substance. on the republican side, i like guiliani and mccain. if pressed, i'd perhaps go mccain.

my predictions sure to go wrong are obama and huckabee.

Who I'd like: Obama and None of the above. If you put a gun to my head, I'd go with McCain, but every Republican is seriously flawed, and as the campaign goes on, they go out of their way to look worse.

Who'd get it: I have no real feel. Clinton, more likely, as the Democrat, but I'll give McCain a very slight edge at the moment.

I'm not 100% sold on any of the candidates this time around and i still haven't picked one on the Republican side. I could never vote for any of the democrats.

i think we end up with Clinton against Giuliani. I realize that Giuliani's numbers are low in the early states, but he leads NY, CA, and FL and thats a friggin ton of votes. we'll see.

I dunno who I'm for in the Democratic primary. I seem to feel differently on different days. Other than Dodd, Kucinich and Gravel I can talk myself into the rest of them.

If I were forced to vote in the Republican primary it would be for McCain.

Who I think will win: Obama and Romney.

I think the Giuliani campaign is about to collapse in a big way. He'll win New York and nothing else.

I really dislike the fact that Huckabee crossed a picket line to go on Jay Leno.

Benjamin Grimm
Jan 03 2008 07:26 AM

He claimed he didn't know that Leno's writers were still on strike. He says he thought it was Leno who settled with his writers, when it was really David Letterman.

Anyone who can't distinguish David Letterman from Jay Leno isn't smart enough to be president. (And I'm one of those traditionalists who thinks that presidents ought to be smart.)

None of the above is a bit of a cop out. Which of the Republicans (or, for Namor, the Democrats) do you find least unpalatable? If one of them is going to be President, which would be least distasteful?

Right around the same time that the Yankees will be celebrating their 27th World Championship.

That would make for a perfect month, wouldn't it?

And don't forget that they have to have resolve and family values.

Nothing gets me pumped up as watching a candidate bagging groceries with the sleeves rolled up, just a regular guy after all.

He's not a regular guy unless he shoots birds out of the sky.

Inneresting how most people's preferences here don't match their predictions. I have a feeling more American's feel the same way, but keep hearing their horse is not electable anyway, so shit, why bother with them?

C-Span has been running "all-politics weekends," which makes me think if they were a hard-rockin', mid-market FM station, they'd be

YOUR OFFICIAL HOME FOR THE IOWA RAUCOUS

The oh-eighth caller when you hear "I'm Joe Biden and when I'm in Iowa, I rock the raucous with C-Span Oh Eight" would win full backstage passes to Board of Elections headquarters in Des Moines for the certification of results on Raucous Night along with an autographed picture of Chris Matthews and the whole Hardball crew. All winners would be placed into a drawing for the big prize, an all-expense paid trip to SUPER TUESDAY (echoing a few times) in the biggest, most Super Tuesday state of 'em all, C-SPAN-I-FORNIA!

I also think their limited-shelf life morning zoo would be headlined by Mitt McCain (he's crazy!) and Giuliana Rodham Obama (she can't say that on the radio!) with traffic and weather from Huckety-Huck The Muckety-Muck (don't mispronounce it or we'll get fined!).

Switch "Republican" and "Democrat", and you've got my view.

="Nymr"]i think we end up with Clinton against Giuliani. I realize that Giuliani's numbers are low in the early states, but he leads NY, CA, and FL and thats a friggin ton of votes. we'll see.

Naah...On 9/10/01, Giuliani's popularity was at rock bottom, and the myth of "America's Mayor" has pretty much been punctured. I think he drops out on Feb. 6.

="Nymr"]Clemens takes it in the ass.

Now there's something we can all agree on.

I've been leaning towards Richardson based primarily on his foreign policy experience. But I'm annoyed by his lame-o attempt to explain why he honestly thought he was drafted by the A's.

If I had to pick someone among the R's, it would be McCain. But, fortunately, I don't have to pick someone among the R's.

Predictions - No major upsets. In Iowa, Clinton by five percentage points over Obama and Romney by ten percentage points over a bunch of people who aren't named Romney. As the nominees, Clinton and Romney.

So i've given this some careful thought and I've decided that I'm going with John McCain. He might not be as fiscally conservative as i want, but i think he's reliable on national security and, importantly, electable.

edit- willets posts as i'm writing, i thought only i was awake at this hour.

Awesome. I hope this is a trend in the other primaries because a) I don't like Clinton's policies/personalities and thus don't think she'll make a good President and b) if nominated she will be crushed by the Republicans even if the put up their wackiest neoconservative evangelical wingnut. Of course since the Democratic party is made up of dumb, spineless, appeasing kiss-up's they are pretty much destined to give Clinton the nod.
