Though the rest of you can look.

Is 'celtic' pronounced "keltic" or "seltic"?

Thank you!

When did they change it? I am sure it used to be "seltic". And I think it's probably a pretty old word.

The only place I hear it pronouned "softly" is to describe the NBA team from Boston. I was told thats an incorrect pronunciation but it's so engrained that it would be ruinous to fix it now.

That's it! That's where I have heard "seltic" all these years, the Boston Celtics!

But suddenly now I'm hearing "keltic" and I'm thinking, "what is this...
Is it like Jaguar? It used to be pronounced 'Jag-waar', now it's 'Jag-u-are'?"

I think the three syllable Jaguar is British and the two-syllable is American, but that both are correct.

I would say I am a Keltic person, but a soccer team I support would be pronounced Glasgow Seltic,I would say any sports team would use Seltic and I could name you a dozen that do. If you were going to study it would be Keltic studies, Keltic music , Keltic art and so on like that.

I would think both are correct.

Does that help?

Yes it does!...all my life I'd said "seltic" then suddenly I'm hearing "keltic" and thought I was wrong! until DocTee pointed out the Boston Celtics.

I think I like the way "seltic" sounds better, though. It's more musical sounding.

According to the OED, both are correct.

In general, the sports teams use "Seltic" and those who refer to the culture use "Keltic."

Quite a range of meanings

The Irish-American rock band 'Black 47' used 'shite' on several occasions and clearly used it as a replacement for shit just as in the above mentioned feck/fuck, or heck/hell, darn/damn, etc.

It has the advantage of making it rhyme with different words and you don't have to censor it for radio play;

Oh it's 6 o'clock and it's time to rock
and me head is beating like a drum
In the cold day light, I feel like shite
and I can't remember last night's fun.

Not that Black 47 gets any radio play (although they should).

Agreed. Love these guys.

Shite is pronounced just the way it's written -- rhymes with Wright -- as far as I know, at least used as a variant for shit.
