Question for the Political Scientists

Hypothetically, Mike Schnerdjunk, runs for President OTUS. He falls short in the primaries and doesn't get the party nod. However, Mike raised $100 million for his campaign but only spent $95 million. What happens to the excess $5 million? In addtion, is he eligible for federal matching funds and, if so, what happens to any of those funds that he doesn't spend?

I'd like to know.

He keeps it for another potential run.

And if he doesn't run again, say he's old like McCain?

Does the bugger get to keep the money?

He can't ever get to it himself. He might eventually choose to donate it to charity or some-such, or give small amounts to campaigns he might support.

Bingo. They usually spread it around to other candidates in their party.

Happens a lot with congressional races. Guys who are in safe seats still raise a lof a money, and it just gets shifted around to the closer contests.
