Heilman is the first player to jump off the train before reaching Arbtration Station as he signs a one-year deal. The remaining five have submitted their salary figures: - Oliver Perez is seeking $6.5mil vs the club's proposal of $4.725 - Pedro Feliciano: $1.2mil vs NYM = 800K - Jorge Sosa: $2.750mil vs $1.70 - Ryan Church: $2.45mil vs $1.75 - Endy Chavez: $2.075mil vs the same $1.725mil that he made in 2008 The team has, almost famously by this point, not gone the full arbitration route with any players since 1992. I remember hearing NYDN writer Adam Rubin saying he thought the club's mindset had changed just a bit recently to the point where they may be willing to see one of these cases all the way through, even if only to avoid the reputation of being the club who wants to avoid arbitration at all costs (and maybe pays too much because of it). On the other hand he said that prior to last year's arb period and they again skirted the process then too.

I agree with the person for rotoworld who said Heilman is worth way more than $1.2M. That's a third of what Schoeneweis is getting. ]- Oliver Perez is seeking $6.5mil vs the club's proposal of $4.725 The market for starting pitchers is so inflated right now that I think Perez would have no difficulty winning that case if it gets that far.

The problem with the whole Heilman/Schoeneweis comparison is that service time is such a big part of determining pay that it makes the "who's better" question almost irrelevent. Schoeneweis got his deal via an open market that Heilman is still 3 years from testing. The only consolation to Heilman in the whole thing is that acheiving arbitration status nearly tripled his salary from last year when the club was able to simply renew his contract at their price. Marty Noble also notes that Heilman has been nicknamed 'Wall Street' by some of his teammates so maybe that means he's invested his meager pittance well.

] Mets, Endy Chavez agree to two-year deal THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Outfielder Endy Chavez and the Mets agreed Tuesday to a $3.85 million, two-year contract. Chavez, who made $1,725,000 last year, gets $1.8 million this season and $2.05 million in 2009. He can make an additional $250,000 in performance bonuses this year and $375,000 in 2009. Chavez was limited to 71 games last season because of a strained left hamstring. He was injured June 6 and didn't return until Aug. 28. He batted .287 with one homer and 27 RBIs in 150 at-bats. Last month, Chavez injured his right hamstring and right ankle while playing winter ball in Venezuela. In exchanging proposed arbitration figures last week, Chavez asked for $2,075,000 and was offered $1,725,000. His deal calls for bonuses this year of $25,000 for 100 games, $50,000 each for 110, 120 and 130 games, and $25,000 each for 350, 375 and 400 plate appearances. In 2009, he would make $50,000 for 100 games, $75,000 each for 110, 120 and 130 games and $25,000 each for 325, 350, 375 and 400 plate appearances.

Not that I care about the money but does that seem a lot for a guy like Chavez?

Believe it or not, it's less than the major league average, which is about $2.85 million. I'm not too worried about it.

His agents are the Scott Boras Corp., but this Adam Rubin notes column (link [url=http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/baseball/mets/2008/02/07/2008-02-07_untitled__metno7s.html]here[/url]) mentions Boras specifically. One wonders if Boras will push it to a hearing, especially considering that Perez is unwilling to accept a contract for past 2008.
