Can we all agree ... ?

Frayed Knot

... that the key to the _____s beating the _____s is for them to:
* establish the run
* avoid turnovers
* put pressure on the quarterback
* stay away from costly penalties
* and control the line of scrimmage

because it would sure save a lot of time and hot air if we just agree that those conditions are pretty much standard for each and every football game ever played and not pretend that they represent some kind of wisdom that's unique to the specific game currently being dissected to within an inch of its life.

If they do all those, plus:

stay within themselves
and
win the battle for field position

they've got a chance.

More keys to victory:

* win the battle in the trenches
* execute their game plan
* come out strong
* battle for 60 minutes

* move the football
* control the clock

You want to stay out of those third-and-long situations.

* Eli just being himself is key
* have fun out there
* ignore the elements

This thread makes me laugh because the Daily News today is chock full of such cliches.

Score more points.
Give 110%.

However, all of the above points for team B beating team A are nullified if A "has B's number".

Not quite sure what constitutes this number ownership thing, but apparently it trumps all other factors no matter what.

A key to this game will be how the _________ respond to the recent legal troubles of ____________ and whether the rest of the team will be able to block it out, or whether the ongoing circus will be a distraction to the team.

You've got to love the euphemistic "legal troubles," like he's been having trouble with an easement on his vacation property by the lake.

As if on cue;
NE Patriot WR Randy Moss has been hit with a restraining order by a woman in Florida who claims that, during the bye week between the reg season and the playoff game vs the Giants, Moss hit her and then prevented her from receiving medical attention.

Thank god he didn't use that week to go to Mexico with a pop star.
I mean that would be a REAL distraction.

i just heard that the giants need to stop the packers on third down if they hope to win.

such is the case with almost all football analysis. never is there discussion of how, just discussion of what they would, almost by definition, have to do in order to win the game.

also, i wondered... if the giants never stopped them on first down, would that not matter? is it only third downs that hold the balance of the game?

It isn't only the reporters who are guilty of cliches..
They may have caught the cliche disease from the coaches and players.

If you watched the Sunday Night football pregame show this year, they would show part of a coach's post game interview after each game's highlights.
The same words kept coming out of the mouths of all the coaches.
I pointed it out to my wife, who is just a casual football fan, and she heard enough in about ten minutes to agree.

I usually can't blame coaches or players when that happens. They hear one of two sets of questions (depending if it's a win or loss) after every game. There's only so many different things that you must do to win games, as this thread shows.

One time (I think in 2006) after the Mets came home from a 8-1 road trip, they went 3-4 on a homestand and some moron reporter asked Wright what was different on the homestand. He gave them some jockspeak, but what else could he say? "Uh, we didn't hit as good or pitch as good."

A few more words: the timing is pretty damn convenient.

Beer, Beer, Beer, makes you want to cheer
Gin, Gin, Gin, makes you want to win
Ice Cold Duck, makes you want to...fight, fight, fight

0 degrees with a wind chill predicted for game time. Solid running game needed.

Surely the primary reason this is a story is because it gives the media outlets an excuse to run pictures of Ms. Simpson.

The sports media kicking up a shitstorm to report reporting on whether a team can ignore a shitstorm is tiresome, to say the least.

That and the fact that they've got nothing else to talk about.

Let's face it, there's really only enough ACTUAL news to fill a couple of hours between games. But these outlets have a mandate to fill 7 days worth of almost 24/day coverage plus 32 page pull-out sections of their newspapers.
So these non-stories and pseudo-stories get treated as if real news if only to act as space filler. In depth discussions on who is favored by the expected cold weather in Wisconson this weekend was being hammered to death yesterday.

Here's a quote I must have heard 100 times in the past week.
Its the anti-key-to-the-game because it doesn't help either team.

"Both teams have to play in the same weather".
