Show and Tell

This might be fun. Take a photo of something interesting that you have in your house, and post it here.

Let's play Show and Tell!

I'll start:

This is a pin that my mother found when she was going through my grandmother's stuff, after my grandmother died in November. It was given to Grandma to commemorate one year of service at the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. It's 10 karat gold.

My grandmother, born in 1911, would have been 17 years old when she received the pin. She worked for Met Life in the original (and only) Met Life Building in New York, the one on Madison Square across from the Flatiron Building. (The Met Life Building on Park Avenue is, as we all know, the Pan Am Building.)

She worked there for about 13 years, and was the only member of her family who was continuously employed during the Great Depression.

The other item, at the lower left, is a penny. It's not as old as the pin, and is included only to give a sense of scale. There's nothing remarkable about the penny.

Anyone else have anything they'd like to share?

This does look fun. When my grandfather died my mom gave me a small plastic box that had his ribbons, metals, and dog tags from WWII as well as some other odds & ends like cufflinks given to retired City of New York employees. The funniest thing is that the label on the box says its for a belly button lint brush. Sadly, the brush itself is long gone.

These are two plates from The Wall Street Journal. The one on the left is dated December 30, 2006, and it's the final edition of the WSJ printed in the 60 inch, wide sheet format. The one on the right is dated January 2, 2007, and it is the first edition printed in the current 48 inch, 5-column format.

This is a watch we found with my Mom's stuff when cleaning out her apartment
when she passed away.

I don't know why she had it or who it belonged to before her and I think it's the ol-
dest thing we own.

The watch didn't work when we found it and it collected dust for a long while and KB
decided that it would be a nice birthday present a couple of years ago to have it
looked at to see if would work if serviced.

She brought it to an antique jeweler and he cleaned it and did whatever antique
jewlers do and it does indeed work. It gains about 5 minutes every 12 hours
and I love the soft ticking sound it makes. It's made by the Columbus Watch
Company who manufactured watches from ~1874 to 1902 and the serial number
indicates that it was made around 1897.
