Mets come to terms with Johan Santana

The Mets have announced that contract extension negotiations with Johan Santana have finished and the trade will be finalized pending player physicals.

Santana is expected to receive a six-year extension, from 2009 through 2014, for about $22 million a year. He will also get a signing bonus of roughly $7 million, which, added to his 2008 salary of $13.25 million, will push the total package over $150 million. SI.com first reported these details, which the source confirmed.

The Mets and the two-time Cy Young award winner had an original deadline of 5 p.m. to complete a contract extension, but when the two sides were still at odds, Major League Baseball granted an additional two hours to finish the deal.

The deal for Santana will be completed once he and Carlos Gomez, Deolis Guerra, Phil Humber and Kevin Mulvey -- the package of prospects sent to Minnesota in the trade -- all pass physicals

Feb 1, 2008 will go down as one of the grea days in NYM history.
Just imagine, it was the day we were able to avoid arbitration with Pedro Feliciano!!!!

Biggest day for the franchise since they won the NL championship in 2000. This is going to be monster.

How would you like to be the front office executive sent to hammer out the Feliciano deal while the rest of the team bangs out one of the biggest deals in Mets history?

Must suck to be Jeff Wilpon.

Now let's get back to that most pressing need - the bullpen that crapped out on us in September.

I'm much more worried about getting enough offense out of Alou/Church/Delgado than I am about what we get out of our 'pen.

A lefty bat with power off the bench would be nice, too.

Pen is small potatoes. Plus Mota and Sele are gone, but face it, having the 1999-2000 or 2006 pens are the exception rather than the rule in baseball. Got to mix and match more so than keeping the same corps throughout the year.

Even the Red Sox had problems in the pen. Think they wanted to use Gagne in anything other than garbage time during the postseason?

He's passed the physical. The deal is official and the press conference will be at 4:30 p.m. today.

Is it going to be live on tv?
If so, what station?

I believe it's a conference call, with the big waving of the 57 next week when the NY media returns from the Super Bowl.

Looks like they're allowing for a few days so the Giants can have a parade.

I guess it would be gauche for the Mets to start planning theirs.

First Giant SB champs denied a parade by "but they're in Jersey" Koch; NYG roamed around the Meadowlands parking lot in the bitter cold though AmEx offered to pay for a Canyon of Heroes event. Second one talked about but short-circuited out of respect for the troops in Desert Storm; got a City Council reception instead. Haven't heard/read anything about contingency plans this time, maybe in deference to the point spread. Bloomberg, one assumes, could foot the bill out of coins that have slipped behind his sofa cushions.

There has not been a Lower Broadway parade for anybody since, if you'll excuse the expression, 2000. Certainly nothing so festive in that neighborhood (in the eyes of some) post-9/11.

So many steps to take before there can be a really good one come late October, but one can dream.

(PS: Grimm's Santana traded card is my wallpaper. Not just on my computer either. The whole house!)

I did hear something about plans on 1050 ESPN Radio the other night about Battery Park. Thought it was strange that this particular radio station would announce it, especially since hosts on that station have often blasted local governments (i.e. Boston) for having such plans "leaked."

From the AP.

]

Here's a breakdown of Johan Santana's annual salary, according to terms obtained by the AP.

2008- $19M
2009- $20M
2010- $21M
2011- $22.5M
2012- $24M
2013 -$25.5M

Santana can vest the $18.75-million team option for 2014 through innings pitched or Cy Young Awards.

I agreed with Koch on that one though. They don't play here. What was the exact quote? "Let'em have a parade in Moonachie!"? Classic Koch.

Here's where we started talking about Santana becoming a Met.

It dates all the way back to last October:

Without looking, I know my opinions on trading for Santana have gone back and forth a few times. In the end, I think we traded the right amount.
