Jay Satan post? That can't be good.
New York meets Johan today at 1:15.

What is known:

  • Johan Santana Bach will continue to wear 57. Sorry, Eric Valent.

  • Wife is Yasmile, camera-shy so far. That may be her boldly wearing white in winter in the photo above.

  • No word on whether Ryan Church will be on hand to hold Santana's water bottle.

I had a thread ready ,lucky I checked before I posted, Johan's dad Jesus will attend as will Wright, Willie, Omar and Jeff.

Luis Castillo says that when he got traded Johan was so pissed that they both talked about it in the locker room and Johan told him he wanted to play for the Mets. So when Luis gets to Shea he tells Minaya about what Santana said.

The day Santana got traded he called Castillo with the good news.

I've yet to see or hear Santana being interviewed. Does anyone know how good his command of English is?

Johan's English is more or less fine. It's a pretty educated family and I imagine he learned English when he was still in Venezuela.

Shea Stadium patch on the right arm looks good.

Johan flanked by Omar and Jeff Wilpon on this right, Willie and David Wright on his left.

I agree with G-Fafif: my first impression is that Johan came across as a real, human bean. Glavine, in contrast, was neither "devastated" or "disappointed" at a nadir in his career, showing that he was incapable of real, human emotion when it was expected.

I'd pretty much defy anyone NOT to be a cliche machine in that kind of setting with those kind of questions.

Would be kinda fun if someone would drop a few bombshells at one of these things:
- Q: "Why'd you want to come to the _________s"
- A: "Cuz they dropped a fuckin' trcukload of money in my lap"

Santana's English tic is apparently "good time". He said some variation on "I'm just going to have a good time" several times in the Q&A and again with Kevin Burkhardt, though by then I think he was looking forward to having a great time.

As one who muddled through six years of junior high and high school Spanish, I'm always amazed that these guys converse like it's no big deal in their second language.

Anticipated Verducci question: "Are you disappointed that you're on the Mets instead of the Yankees, where you could learn intangibles from Derek Jeter?"

Trust me, at an event like this, no one is going to ask a good question. They'll wait until they have one-on-one interviews.

I keep forgetting that Luis Castillo is a Met.

My brain must be trying to block out the last month or so of the 2007 season.

It's nice that Castillo played a role, however small, in helping bring Santana to the Mets. (I remember Pete Harnisch tried to do something similar with Craig Biggio, although Biggio was a free agent at the time.)

I had said a few times in several threads this winter that my anticipation for the new season just wasn't kicking in. Now it's fully kicked in. I'm VERY eager for the new season to start.

And I'm also very much hoping that Johan pitches the spring training game I'll be attending next month in St. Lucie.

Beautiful! Damn, those pinstripes and blue caps are things of beauty. You have the same look as Seaver and Koosman and Ryan and Matlack and, save for the racing stripes, Gooden and Franco. He looks like on of US, if that makes sense.

'Twas fun listening to Jeffie claim that they didn't go past their standards for this contract.
His spin is that it isn't a 7-year deal but actually just a 5-year since Johan was already signed for 2008 (even though they tore that one up and tacked it on to the entire deal) and that the final year is an option.

Oh, OK.
