CPF Meeting(s) Discussion Thread 5/31/08

Kong76
Feb 15 2008 12:34 PM

In the spirit of the Blue Tarp Lounge, various Virgil's meetings, the Acme
Grill, Bobby V's, that other joint in Times Square (the name escapes me), etc.
I'd like to start a discussion on two possible meet-ups for 2008.

A spring-training March meeting and a get-your-own-tickets-to-a-game-we-
all-can-go-to and have a big-ass tailgate party to send off the Old Girl one last
time is what I'm sayin'.

For the March meeting, I think maybe we need to do something a little dif-
ferent to garner more interest. Anyone have any ideas?

As far as the game goes, I think a Saturday night game would be best since
it's generally an off-day and we can all meet mid-afternoon and ease on into
the night. Again, anyone have any ideas?

Don't be bashful, chime in NOW!!!

Valadius
Feb 15 2008 12:36 PM

I need to get on the phone with the Mets and set a date for when I'm throwing out the first pitch. That would be a great game to meet up with you guys for.

Kong76
Feb 15 2008 12:42 PM

If you get a choice, pick a Saturday night!

themetfairy
Feb 15 2008 12:42 PM

A Sunday game would be better for us. We have a Sunday plan this year, and it would be hard to go on a Saturday night and then back on a Sunday.

I'll be out of town the weekend of March 22-23, but otherwise I should be able to make a lunch.

Val - why are you throwing out a first pitch?

Kong76
Feb 15 2008 12:44 PM

Shot down in 8 minutes, a new record!

themetfairy
Feb 15 2008 12:46 PM

Not shooting down. Redirecting.

It's not like you don't have experience running Sunday tailgate parties.

AG/DC

Edited 1 time(s), most recently on Feb 15 2008 01:11 PM

Hah, I suppose arguments could be made that I have either or both at times.

One problem with Sunday is that if we are to spend two-three hours of quality
time together people have to show up at 9 or 10 in the morning instead of 3
or 4 on a Saturday afternoon.

We'll see if there's a consensus, like the fairy said I have been sighted in East
Rutherford at all kinds of early hours on a Sunday morning.

Which reminds me ... is the Chinese Roasting Box still around, JCL?

John Cougar Lunchbucket
Feb 15 2008 01:17 PM

The Box has not been in Action since that Jets game. We are thinking of busting it out again this summer at some point but prolly won't take it on the road. Smokey Joe will travel though.

I'm good for whatever game is convenient for you guys. Preseason lunch is ok with me too. If you want we could align it with a televised preseason game at a bar that will show such.

Kong76
Feb 15 2008 01:26 PM

The box is kinda large to be transportin' and I agree that it was fun to have
the Mets game on at that place that I can't remember the name of.

Another consideration is if AG, Willet, and others can be in town on a given
weekend for both occasions.

AG/DC
Feb 15 2008 01:29 PM

Opus 40.

Kong76
Feb 15 2008 01:40 PM

Forgot about that option.

Valadius
Feb 15 2008 01:42 PM

You know what, I'll ask him. I'll get back to you on that.

Farmer Ted
Feb 15 2008 01:51 PM

I am a follower in this directive. Name it and I will come out of the Boonies. Need to sit in that big blue semi-horse shoe one more time myself, Toddler Ted included (her first and last time).

Gwreck
Feb 15 2008 03:10 PM

I think these are the two best options:

Saturday, May 31 vs. Los Angeles. 3:55 Gametime.
Saturday, June 14 vs. Texas. 7:10 Gametime.

I think once we get further into the summer it'll be tougher to get everyone together. Plus, these are at least the "Silver" games and somewhat less expensive (upper deck = $20/seat).

I would also be in for the preseason lunch. Sunday March 16 game vs. Detroit (good matchup!) will be on SNY. We want to avoid the following weekend 'cause that's Easter weekend...and the prior Sunday is when single-game tickets go on sale.

Willets Point
Feb 15 2008 03:38 PM

Saturdays are nice for us out-of-town folk so we can make a weekend of it and not get back ridiculously late on a Sunday night.

Kong76
Feb 15 2008 04:01 PM

I like Gwrecks take.

Rockin' Doc
Feb 15 2008 04:24 PM

I agree with Willets that a Saturday game is generally best for those of us that may (hopefully) be attending from out of town.

Kong76
Feb 23 2008 08:31 AM

Anyone give any more thought to this?

That May 31st late-afternoon game is barking out to me as a great tail-
gating meet-up game.

themetfairy
Feb 23 2008 08:34 AM

We're definitely out for that weekend - that's D-Dad's college reunion (and he's on the reunion committee, so there's no way he's missing that).

Rockin' Doc
Feb 23 2008 06:20 PM

I really want to get back to Shea before they tear her down. The May 31st game has great possibilities for our family.

seawolf17
Feb 23 2008 06:24 PM

Count me in for three for the 31st.

Farmer Ted
Feb 23 2008 06:55 PM

Mets.com shows no tickets for sale for that game. WTF?

Kong76
Feb 23 2008 07:32 PM

They're really pushing (milking) packages and plans, single games don't go
on sale until 3/9 if I remember the date right.

Gwreck
Feb 23 2008 10:07 PM

KC is right, 3/9 is the date.

I am of course in for that date as well.

Farmer Ted
Feb 24 2008 10:31 AM

Hmm, looks like tix are available for other game with a green T icon.

Gwreck
Feb 24 2008 10:57 AM

Because the Mets are selling upper reserved seats to "selected" games ahead of time. General sales for all games begins Sunday 3/9.

sharpie
Feb 25 2008 08:35 AM

The 5/31 game probably works for me.

I'm generally about the next few weeks so a ST lunch thing would probably also work.

Rockin' Doc
Feb 27 2008 11:30 AM

The May 31st game is slated for a cap giveaway (sponsored by Verizon) for the first 25,000 fans.

seawolf17
Feb 27 2008 01:22 PM

I think the CPF should sponsor a giveaway. How expensive could that be? A couple dozen thousand bucks?

Kong76
Feb 27 2008 06:29 PM

Looking forward to 5/31, good luck to everyone getting tickets. We'll talk
about tail-gaiting when it gets closer.

If there's interest in a ST Manhattan meeting I guess I'll leave it for someone
else to try and corral the troops. It also occurs to me that perhaps a September
game might be a good idea too for those who can't make May and it is the last
freakin' year at Shea.

We need camp counselors, not campers ... don't be bashful.

themetfairy
Feb 27 2008 06:37 PM

How about Sunday, Sept. 14th, against the Braves? I can't plan on the 7th (it's my daughter's birthday), and the 30th is going to be a hard ticket to get, but the 14th should be reasonably available.

Kong76
Feb 28 2008 02:59 PM

I'm ok with that unless it's the Jets home opener date.

Not a big fan of trotting out to Shea on a Sunday night and Mets/Braves in
September may very well end up being important enough for it to be moved.

I said September, but the Sunday August games are probably ok with me too.

Feb 28 2008 03:30 PM

Gw: >>>Who's in?<<<

I'm probably good with that too.

Silly story ... last time I was at the Zone my wife and her friend ran into
Richard Thomas as we were approaching it. They were like, "you're, you're!"
and he slowed to a near stop and replied "yes, I am!" and he kept on walking.
Me and my friend got a kick out of them not asking for a phone picture or an
autograph or at least giving him a, "good night John Boy" as he faded into the
crowd and all they could utter was, "you're, you're" to him.

soupcan
Feb 28 2008 03:45 PM

Gosh - do half the people on this board even know who Richard Thomas is (was)?

When The Waltons was at its height of popularity, my parents went out to dinner one night and returned home with a menu upon which Richard Thomas had affixed his autograph.

They were thrilled to have met the then well-known TV star and my sister and I thought it was just the coolest.

RE: ESPN Zone - Would love to, but stag time on weekends just ain't in the family plan for the past 11 and next 6-7 years.

I actually do live close enough to make it home, although given that I'm not in the CPF Fantasy League, I had no idea a draft was even taking place.

New plan: Saturday, March 8. Same details as above. Mets vs. Marlins on Channel 11.

Kong76

16th is better than the 8th for me but not sure about either.

The game on the 31st sounds good. It would be nice if there were a contingent sitting together instead of us all getting separate seats. I would be in on a groupsit if that is possible.

Gwreck
Mar 05 2008 02:16 PM

Groupsit logistics are tough. And require a financial commitment from somebody, and then getting paid back. Figured it was too difficult to arrange that.

If we aren't able to buy a block of tickets for everyone, which I know is a big headache for the person coordinating the tickets, can we at least designate a particular section for everyone to purchase their tickets in? I'm 90% sure that I'll be coming up for the game. Unfortunately, it is the weekend before final exames for my daughter, so my wife and daughter are out. My son may be able to accompany me, but we're really not really sure about his schedule at this point.

My present plan is to purchase two tickets in hopes that my son can accompany me. If he can't, then I hope to convince one of my buddies (none of whom are really baseball fans) to go with me for a free weekend in NYC with tailgating and a game. I really don't want to travel close to 500 miles to atend the game by myself.

a couple of us who discussed it off-board. Once that group got to about ten
I didn't want it to turn into a project.

Everyone get tickets wherever and plan on tail-gaiting too since it's a four
o'clocker. I figure we'll hang over by the water in that section facing La-
Guardia but we have plenty of time for logistics and pot luck discussions.

Farmer Ted

A lot of pot luck goes on near that water. Unless you're Mark Corey, then it's not-so-luck. Depending on the NY water taxi schedule from Manhattan, we may try to join up after a booze cruise.

The most bizarre episode of the afternoon was our fight to get the Mets game on TV. Keep in mind that this is the ESPN Zone in the middle of Times Freakin' Square, with something like 40 televisions. The Philadelphia Flyers/Pittsburgh Penguins game is on several sets, there are basketball games galore, the MFYs are on, but no Mets. So we ask them to put it on, only to be told that it couldn't be done. We ask to see a manager, who also tries to explain to us that the televisions have been pre-programmed and could not be changed.

Needless to say, he wasn't impressing us much. We basically told him that this wasn't acceptable.

Shortly thereafter, the impossible became possible, and the Mets game miraculously appeared on one (small) screen (replacing a football game from last season that was being shown on the NFL Network). We missed Pedro's first inning, but caught the rest of his outing.

Wow. This year, because they were afraid of the lack of partial plans announced for Citi Field, my Dad's company (well, its just him and his partner in the firm) bought the entire season, just for the CHANCE to get in the park in 2009. Well anyway, pre-paid parking came along with the seats, so we (my Dad and myself) haven't driven to our usual spot underneath Northern Blvd. Heh, I guess its a good thing then! The only other place we generally parked is right around College Point Avenue. Which probably is safe from the Shea parking patrol!

Well, I got my Irish Stout aging in my basement. I tried a bottle of it a couple of weeks ago and it was pretty tasty. I will bring extra because I think that, with this team, we are going to need as much alcohol as possible.

But anyway, what is that in the parking lot anyway? It is really confusing me. Is it some kind of fair?

I went to the game on Mother's day and my friend parked right under the bridge just north of that little round-about. (A lot has changed since that picture). I was waiting for him to show up and he got there just before the game started and had no problem parking there. Take that for what it is worth. . . but my gut tells me that, especially if we are getting there early, that X spot is a good spot to meet. So unless I am told differently, I will be there with my home brew and I will drink it all by myself if I have to, God damn it!

May 23 2008 04:18 PM

I don't want to camp counselor too much, but a couple of things ...

a) the approximate x marks the spot is the spot unless someone brings up
points against.

b) I'll try and be there by 12:45 and I'll bring two grills which I'll try and keep
going until we're ready to pack up.

c) Everyone bring whatever, it's pot luck, not a catered affair -- I will bring
plates, plastic utensils, and paper towels/napkins.

d) Drinking from beer bottles, cans, etc. is illegal ... bring cups and be aware
of roving cops on bikes. We don't want someone's afternoon to be ruined by an
open container summons. The thought of a home-made chicken stout will get
me through the week.

e) A bunch of us should exchange cell phone numbers via email/PM, especially
those traveling from out of town. People who are getting tickets at the tailgate
too.

Ok, that was kinda camp counselorish .... chime in sooner than later if anyone
thinks of anything.

With a two-year-old of our own, we'll likely bring some Goldfish and a stack of diapers.

Seriously, we'll try to contribute something easy, like a bag of chips or two and a couple jars of salsa.

May 30 2008 06:54 AM

I'll prolly take the subway so I'd rather not make something which would involve containers and such. So I'll bring chips and some soda for the non-drinkers (I'm not one of those, but Lenny will be with me).

80% chance of thunderstorms tomorrow. Is there a contingency for a rainout or at least it being too wet to congregate?

Part of me is thinking it might be safer to just meet over at the restaurant
formerly known as Bobby V's - is that still there? I fear not being able to
get the word out to everyone though. I have some cell numbers.

If we do that, we'd probably take the train in too.

Anybody got a key to the Blue Tarp Lounge?

Kong76
May 30 2008 07:32 AM

I found the hotel on 114th street is now a Holiday Inn (I thought it was a
Ramada) and the restaurant is now call Pine Queens.

I know most of you have been there at least once, it's got a big square bar
and family style Italian restaurant.

I guess we'll give it until 2:00 pm today for people to chime in and then ...

By the way the former Bobby Vee's tonight is the site of a MBTN book event. If you are going to the game 2nite stop by and have a beer and a schmooze.

NOAA - Corona, New York

Well that's better than damaging winds and hail I heard somewhere else!!!

I'm disappointed by the forecast as well, and while I suspect we may be able to get the tailgate in, I would advocate that it's going to be more effective to move it inside simply to ensure that the gathering actually happens.

1:30 PM at the bar?

This game may be cancelled Saturday morning.

Kong76
May 30 2008 10:17 AM

Put me down for a vote for 1:30 at The Restaurant Formerly Known As
Bobby V's. It occurs to me that people with kids might envision that not
working but we can get a big table in the restaurant and order appetizers
and stuff?

Chime in people, golf umbrellas and wet bbq or mussels marinara and beer?

holychicken
May 30 2008 10:22 AM

I am down with the bar, the only problem is that it means no chicken stout. Which means more for me, which is fine by me. :)

sharpie
May 30 2008 10:37 AM

I think we should wait til tomorrow morning to make the call on whether to go to the bar. The tailgate thingee sounds like more fun as once you're at a table it becomes difficult to talk to people who aren't in your necka the woods unlike the mingling possibilities of the great outdoors. I'll be there either way.

seawolf17
May 30 2008 11:20 AM

I agree with making the call tomorrow. We're figuring on leaving home around 1:00ish, getting to the park around 2:00-2:30ish.

Hopefully they've made a play-or-no-play decision by then.

Kong76
May 30 2008 12:48 PM

I guess there's no harm in waiting until morning. Traffic
generally dies around this time anyway here on Fridays. I'll
post the final destination at 7:00-ish tomorrow morning.

I hope everyone local can get the message. I have cell #'s
of the people coming from greater distances and I can call
them late morning if we're going to The Pines.

Hay, it ain't like the can really predict the weather anyway.

May 30 2008 04:10 PM

Damn, this weather forecast sucks. My buddy and I left home around 9:45 AM this morning. Checked into our hotel in northern NJ around 5:15 PM. If the tailgate is called off, or moved to the bar, we will definitely need directions of where to go. Only read of the gatherings at the former Bobby V's, have no ide where it was.

I don't actually have a computer with me, but I can check in on the hotel lobby computers. I'll check back in later tonight and then again in the morning. KC and Seawolf have my cell number should they need to inform me of a change in plans.

Let's hope the forecast is way offbase. I'll keep checking in.

Kong76
May 30 2008 06:23 PM

Don't worry about finding the restaurant, RD. If we end up changing it to there
we'll be taking the train in and I'll meet you and walk over with you.

Kong76
May 31 2008 05:00 AM

Well, it's pretty nice out in central Westchester right now. Still, NOAA, The
Weather Channel, and a couple of local yokels all say severe thunderstorms
with high winds and possible hail for this afternoon. Times vary.

I think it's best to move tailgate central to The Pines - 37-10 114th Street.
Hope to see as many as possible any time after 1:30 or so.

If it rains we can laugh at the rain, if it doesn't we can laugh at me!

You weren't kidding about 7 am... nailed it!

We're in for the restaurant. Save us three seats... we'll be there probably around 2ish. If the game's rained out, at least we'll have gotten our tickets from you.

Considering weather... should we park at the hotel and then drive to Shea? Or park at Shea and walk/train to restaurant? Keep in mind we have a 2 year old who's in a strollers-are-for-babies phase.

Kong76
May 31 2008 06:14 AM

Yeah, I don't know. If I were driving, I'd park at Shea and walk. Depending
on what lot you end up in, it's a 5-6 minute walk ... maybe a little more with
a mini-seawolf.

John Cougar Lunchbucket

Figuring out the trains from New Brunswick sound too difficult for us two southern hicks. We'll likely drive over and park at Shea, then walk over. Probably easier for us to figure out in all honesty. I had to tell the woman at the hotel front desk which stop was Shea's and she still seemed rather seemed confused.

I have KC's cell number should we get confused from Shea. Hope to arrive around 1:30-1:45 PM.

sharpie
May 31 2008 07:55 AM

If that's the same hotel you pick up Stub Hub tickets at, I remember parking near there and walking to Shea was a pretty good option and a lot cheaper than paying the ridiculous Shea parking fee. I might do that.

I'll prolly be there with Lenny around 2.

May 31 2008 08:39 AM

So by "tail-gate central" we mean we aren't tailgating any more and just going to the bar? Just trying to decide whether or not I should drive or take the train in.

I wish I had seen this earlier. It's easy. NJ Transit to Penn Station, then transfer to the LIRR to Shea. I do that all the time for Sunday games.

Drove to Shea with no real difficulty. Met up with KC and his wife KB, then headed over to the Holiday Inn bar for some beer and socializing. It was great to see old acquaintances as well as to meet many others for the first time. We had a great time and got to see a good game with a Mets win.

Left our hotel around 10:00 Am this morning, arrived safely at home at 5:30 PM. If only the weather had cooperated so the tailgating would have been possible. Still, all in all, it was a great trip.
